Description

C. K. McDONALD'& .I. W. DEWEES.
Portable Steamers for Potatoes, 61s. 49 4 PatentedApril7 lB74.
Witnesses: 1 Inventor I I Q Per UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
CAREY K. MCDONALD AND JOHN W. DEWEES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE STE AMERS FORPOTATOES, &e.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 49,411, dated April 7, 1874; application filed September 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that we, CAREY K. MCDON- ALD and JOHN W. DEWEES, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Penn-,
' of the wheels, the case or shell, the fire-chamber, flue, and stack, the steamers and their baskets and covers, and the oven, said parts being constructed and arranged, in connection with each other, as hereinafter fully described.
The device is made in the general formof a locomotive-engine, and is mounted upon three wheels, A, one small wheel in front and two larger ones toward the rear, so that the machine may readily pass the curb-stones. B is the outer case, to which the wheels A are attached, and to the rear part of which are attached the handles G, by which the machine is propelled. Dis the fire-chamber, the flue E from which passes back beneath the boiler F, up at the rear end of said boiler, and out through the stack G. The boiler F is made in the form of a segment of a cylinder, and has partitions at its forward and rear ends, extending up to the shell B, so as to form an airchamber, H. I are the steamers, one, two, or more of which may be used, and which pass in through the top of the shell B. The lower part of the steamers I is made in the form of a tube, and opens into the boiler F. The upper part of the steamers I is made larger, to receive the wire or perforated sheet-metal baskets J, in which the articles are placed to be steamed, and which are provided with bail's for convenience in putting them in and taking them out of the steamers. The steamers I are provided with loosely-fitting covers K,
which confine the steam, and, at the same time, act as safety-valves, to allow the steam to escape when'its pressure becomes too great.
In the rear end of the shell B, just above the firechamber D, is formed an oven, L, which is divided into upper and lower compartments by a horizontal partition, M. \Vhen the articles are removed from the steamers I they are placed in the lower compartment of the oven L to drive off the moisture, and are then placed in the upper compartment to be kept hot until sold. The oven'is provided with a door for putting in and taking out the articles, and which enables the temperature of the oven to be regulated as desired, by admitting more or less air. The lower or tubularpart of the steamer I should be provided with a valve, (not shown in the drawing,) to enable the steam to be shut oil when putting in and taking out the baskets J.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The steamer formed of the wheels A, case or shell B, fire-chamber, flue, and stack D E Gr, boiler F, steamers I, baskets J, covers K, and oven L M, said parts being constructed and arranged, in connection with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
CAREY K. MCDONALD. JOHN W. DEWEES. WVitnesses:
