To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gmnns P. ALEXAN- DER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga an State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dimmers, of which the following is a s ecification.
This invention re ates to improvements in dimmers for automobiles and other types of head lights and has for an object to provide a shield readily attachable to a lamp and so positioned and shaped as to prevent the usual objectionable glare and at vthe same time repailri the illummative efficiency of the headlg t.
Another object is to provide a dimer of this nature wherein is included reliable means whereby the relative position of the dimmer and lamp is kept constant, thus preventing breaking of the bulb orlamps.
Other objects will be in art obvious and in part ointed out hereina ter.
In or er that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, l have in the accompanying illustrative drawings, and in the following detailed descri tion based thereon set out one ossible embo iment of the same.

Fig. 5 is a detail showing the clip carried by the shield.
Having more particular reference to the drawing throughout which similar characters of reference designate similar parts, In improved dimmer may be stated as inclu ing a shield 6 which is somewhat spoonshaped, having its forward end 7 of such a length as to extend considerably below the center of the bulb or lamp B, thereby covering a major portion thereof. As illustrated in Figures 1 and 4, the opposed longitudinal sides are cut away or curved longitudinally upward to permit the light rays from thebulb, to strike the reflector of the headlight and increase the active reflective surface. Furthermore, the inner face of the shield 6 is finished to provide a reflecting surface.
In order to provide a desirable attaching means, I have formed the rear end of the shield so as to permit welding or riveting a substantially inverted Ushaped spring clip 9, which takes over the socket or other part of the headlight as indicated in the draw- %)rdinarily the forward end of the shield would tend to drop and due to continual vibration would break the bulb. To overcome this, I have arranged upon the said front end portion of the shield a light metal ring 10 having an integral fin er for'attachment to the inner face of said s ield. As shown, this ring is of less diameter than the bulb and reortion of the front end of saidbulb ceives a and retalns the shield and bulb in spaced relation.
This shield is arranged upon the upper side of a bulb and as stated exposes a major ortion of the longitudinal sides of the bul thereby resulting in only a slight reduction of the illuminatin efficiency of the light, while the forward en of the shield is extended downwardly to cover a major portion of the front end of the bulb and prevent the forward projection of light rays at a height suflicient to blind a person being approached.

claim:
.1. A device of. the character described, comprising in combination, a reflector, a socket, a lamp inthe socket, a shield for the lamp including a main body portion arran' ed over the upper side of the lamp and having its side edges terminated above the longitudinal center of the lamp, the forward end of the body portion being curved downwardl below the center of the'lamp and space therefrom, a supportin ring depending from the inner face of t e shield and adapted to receive a'portion of the front end of the lamp and retain the shield and lamp in spaced relation, and a connection between the rear end of the shield and the socket.
2. A device of the character described, comprising in combination, a reflector, a socket, a lamp in the socket, a shield for the lamp including a main body portion arranged over the u per side of the lamp and having its side e ges terminated above the longitudinal center of the lamp, the forward end of the body portion being curved downwardly below the center of the lamp and spaced therefrom, a supporting ring depend- 5 ing from the inner face of the shield and adapted to receive a portion of the front end of the lamp and retain the shield and lamp in spaced relation, the rear end of the shield being reduced and transversely curved to snugly engage the socket, and a substantially 1 inverted U-shaped spring clip carried by the reduced end and engageable over the socket.
