ALIDOR LEFRE OFKJACKSON, MICHIGAN, .ASSIGNOR TO RIVERSIDE FORGE AND MACHINE COMPANY, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
'rRIi/IMING DIE.
Application led April 2B, 1923. ASerial No. 635,382.
'Ihis inventionrelates to improvements in trimming dies.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a trimming die for wheel hub forgings which accurately centers and trims the work.
Second, to provide an improved trimming die which is of large capacity and at the same time permits uniformly accurateA work.
Third, to provide an improved trimming die for hub forgings which-is not likely to get out of repair.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying dra-wing forming a part of this application, in which:l y
Fig. I is a detail view, mainly in `vertical section on a line corresponding to line 1-1 o-f Fig.` II of my improved trimming die,
the male die member or plunger being shown in partially retracted position, apiece of work being illustrated in position and only such parts ofthe machine being illustrated as are deemed necessary to show an adaptation or embodimentof my invention.
Fig. II is a horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. I. n
Fig. III is a perspective view of one of the hubI forgings prior to trimming.
Fig. IV is a perspective view of one of the hub forgings after trimming.
In the drawing similar referencenumerals indica-te similar parts throughout the views and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines. j j j Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the bed of the machine of the punch press type. and 2 the plunger. vThe operating parts of the machine are not illustrated as they form no part of this'invention. Upon the bed 1 I mount a bed member 3 having a shouldered recess 4.- in its face, the annular die member 5 being secured in this recess.
The bed member is also provided with a longitudinal bore 6, the die member 5 being concentric relative to this bore. The work centering member 7 is a reciprocating fit within the bore and is yieldingly supported by means of the coiled spring 8 arranged within the bore, the bore having a shoulder 9 at its lower end to support the spring.
This centering member has a seat or socket 10 for the hub portion 11 of the `hubforging 12, the seat being conformed so that the hub forging may be dropped into it and is properly centered relative to the dies. As these forgings come from the forging dies they ordinarily have a web ror flash of metal as 13. It will be understood that no attempt is made to illustrate the relative proportion of flash as this is normally irregular. l
rIhe work centering member 7y is normally held in the projected position shown to receive the work without danger of its being dropped upon the die, which mightv chip the same, and also it serves as astripper or ejector for the work after it has been oper-y ated upon. v
The male die member 14 is mounted upon the plunger'to coact with the female die member. and has a longitudinal bore 15 thereinin which the work clamp 16 is reciprocatingly mounted, the work clamp having a stem 17 provided with a retaining pin 1S to limit the downward throw of the clamp under its actuating spring 19. The clamp 16 is normally projected and its face is conformed to engage the inner side of the hub forging coacting with the centering .thestripper's are yieldingly held in their projected position.
With this arrangement of parts I provide a machine which is very accurate, can be operated by Workmen not particularly skilled and is of large capacity.
I have illustrated and described my improvements as I have embodied them for trimming hub 'forgings My improvements may, however, be adapted and are desirable for use in trimming other forgings and parts. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe such embodiments or adaptations as I believe the disclosure made Will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
