.Be it known that I, JOHN E. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trimming-Dies, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to trimming dies and in particular to dies for trimming the edges of hollow articles.

Another object is to provide a simple sturdy apparatus for this purpose comprising as few parts as is consistent with the proper operation of an apparatus of this character.

In the several figures in which like parts are designated by like reference characters, 1 indicates a block provided with ears 2 adapted to be secured to the bed of a press by means of suitable bolts or cap screws, not Shown. The block is bored out at its center as at 3, the bore being restricted at 4 for the insertion of a shouldered tube 5. Within the enlarged portion of the bore is placed the die 6 having a shearing edge 7. The die is provided with a shank 8 slidably mounted in the tube 4. A strong expansive spring .9 is coiled between the base of the shank and the lower end of the tube, said spring normally forcing the die partially out of the bore 3. To'limit this movement, the lower end of the shank 8 and secured in place by a set pin V11. Over the lower end ofthe stem is -fpassed washer v'and#onto-:itis threaded an adjusting nut 13, and a lock nut 14. It will be understood that by suitably adjusting these nuts 13 and 14 that the extent to which the die 6 will extend above the base block will be limited as desired. In Fig. 2, there being no restraint on the die, the die is in its Auppermost portion, with the washer 12 and nuts 13 and 14 engaging the lower end of the tube 5. The bore 8 is of a diameter to just permit the die to slide freely within the recess without permitting any wabbling of the die. The die is hollowed out to a shape corresponding to the shape of the article which is to be trimmed. In this instance it is hollowed out so as to accommodate a cup shaped member, this member being shown in cross section in F ig. 1 as seated in a substantially cylindrical recess 15 in the die 6.
In order to save machining and to permit ready insertion of the article to be operated upon, only a portion 16 of the cylinder is machined to size, the remainder being carved out so as to leave sufficient clearance for the ready insertion of the article. A raised annular ring 17 is formed in the base of the cylindrical opening for the same reasons. ln order to expel the article after it has been trimmed, a pin 18 is in bore in the shank 8 and a spring 19 coiled in this bore and in a counterbore in the stem bears against said pin. The outward movement of the pin is limited by the enlarged head 20 thereon. Mounted in the base block are anv suitable number of posts of the same diameter. In this instance three have been chosen although it is to be understood that any other number may be employed depending upon the shape, size or thickness of the article to be trimmed, all as will be understood after reading this specification. These parts designated as 21, 22 and 23 respectively. are each non-rotatably secured to the block by means of screws 24 screw threaded into tapped holes drilled at the juncture of the post G and the block, as will be readily understooc. The posts are preferably arranged equally distant from one another in the circumference of a circle having its center in the axis of the cylindrical recess 15 and the center are provided with cam surfaces as will be ymore particularly described farther on.
Coperating with the lower stationary member carrying the'trimming die there is slidably mounted with-v parts opposing the y .die 6, the shearing edge 32 a movable member carrying the punch. This member comprises a block 25 adapted to be connected in any suitable manner with the movable member of the press as for eX- ample by clamping the shank 2G which is an integral part of the block to the movable member of the press. This block, like the lower stationary block is recessed at 27 and within this recess there is positioned the flange 28 of the punch 29. The flange 28 is of a diameter considerably less than the diameter of the recess 27 within the block 25, as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 and is free to move around laterally in said recess. 1n order to maintain the flange within the recess, a retaining ring 30 is provided, said ring being secured to the block 25 by any suitable means such as screws 31. The punch has a shearing edge 32 adapted to cooperate with the shearing edge 7 on the die in order to trim the article placed within the recess 15.
To effect the proper positioning of the cupor other article to be trimmed, a plunger 33 is slidably mounted within a bore 34 in the unch 29, said plunger being provided with a head 35 freely movable longitudinally and laterally in a counterbore 36 in the block 25. A spring 37 having an expansive force intermediate that of springs 9 and 19 urges the plunger partially out of the punch, such movement being limited by the head 35 just described.
The diameter of the punch is slightly less than the internal diameter of the article to be operated upon. To properly space the two shearing edges apart, a number of spacing pins 38 are provided, these pins being rigidly secured in the laterally movable flange 28 and being of such length that when they bear against the upper surface of the will just clear the shearing edge 7 as the punch is moved laterally. From the above description, it
vcan be seen that as the upper member is moved downwardly, that the pins 38 will engage the die 6 and-move the same downwardly against the tension of spring 9, always maintaining the Ydie perfectly level, the shearing edge 32 meanwhile always being the same distance vertically above the shearing edge 7.
It is now apparent that if during this downward motion the punch be moved laterally in several different directions, that the article inserted in the die would have its edge sheared olf. This is accomplished by means of inclined surfaces Aon the flange cooperating with the cams on the posts hereinbefore referred to. The posts 21, 22 and 23 each have a rounded surface39 adapted to lit within apertures 40 in the movable member of the trimming die, said parts acting as guide rails for the movable member. The vcams on these posts 21, 22 and 23 designated as 41, 42 and 43 respectively are each arranged at different levels and coperatingwith these cams are three pairs of inclined surfaces 44 in the same horizontal level on the flange 28. lt can now be understood that as the upper block 25 is moved downwardly onto the stationary posts that the flangel 28 carrying with it the punch 29 will move successively in three different directions, moving lirst in a direction away from the cam 41, and then successively away from the cams 42 and 43; thus the punch and die will successfully shear off the article placed within the cylindrical recess in the die. As the movable member is raised, the flange will again move laterally in three different directions and finally the nose of the inclined portions 44 will contact with the Vsurfaces 45 on the three posts and the flange will centralize the punch with respect to the die, these surfaces 45 all being at the same distance from the centers of the posts,
Rigidly secured within the recess 27 of the block 25 there is an alining pin 46 and in the flange 28 there isa hole 47 considerably larger in diameter than the pin 46 in order that lateral motion thereof with respect to the block 25 may not be restricted. The purpose of this pin and hole is to insure that the inclined surfaces on the flange 28 will be restored to the same position relative to the cams on the posts when the posts have been disassembled and are then reassembled. A line 48 is placed' on one of the posts so as to permit the operator to use the same as a guide in initially setting the downward limit of movement of the block 25.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
l. A trimming die comprising a member having means to support an article thereon, and a member cooperating with said first named member in shearing relation therewith having motion in two different planes, in order to eii'ect said shearing relation.
2. i trimming device comprising a member movable longitudinally provided with means to support an article, a second member in shearing relationship therewith also movable longitudinally and means to impart lateral movement to said second member to effect a shearing cut on the article during longitudinal movement of both members.
A trimming die comprising a longitudinally movable member adapted to support an article, a second member movable longitudinally therewith, means to maintain said two members at a given distance from one another during said longitudinal movement and means to impart lateral movement to said second named member during longitudinal movement of both members.
4. A trimming die comprising a base block, a member having means to support an article thereon in said base block, amember cooperating with said first named member in shearing relation therewith, means to support the second named member and means in the base block to impart a lateral movement to the second named member upon movement o'l the supporting means.
5. A trimming die comprising a base block, a die mounted in said base block having means to support an article therein, a punch coperating with said die in shearing relationship therewith, means for supportsaid punch and a unitary device secured in said base block acting as a guide for said supporting means and as a movement imparting means for said punch, said device being effective to impart movement only upon movement of the'supporting means.
6. A trimming die comprising a base block, a member having means to support an article thereon, said member being free to move only along its longitudinal aXis and ,in a Vvertical plane within the base block,
' Aa second member in shearing relationship therewith, a support for said member, said second member being free to move only in a horizontal plane with respect to said supporting member and means operatife yto move said second members laterally while both members are being moved longitudinally.
7. In a trimming die, a combination of a die member, means to support an article thereon, a punch member, means to maintain said two members in a given spaced apart relationship, means tending to urge said die member in one direction, the spacing means cooperating with the punch, to urge said die member' in the opposite direction and means to impart both lateral and longitudinal movements to said punch member.
S. A trimming die comprising a stationary base block and a second cooperating block, a die provided with a recess slidable in said base block, a punch in said second block slidable in a plane at right angles to the plane oi' movement of the die, a means rigidly secured in said base block to guide'the second block in its movement and to impart movement to the punch as the block moves and means interposed between the punch and die to insure a spacing between'the two no less than a predetermined minimum value.
9. A trimming die comprising a stationary base block and a second coperating block, a die provided with a recess slidable in said base block, a pin in said die tending to eX- pel an article adapted to be placed within said recess, a punch coperating with said die, said punch being supported by a second biock, and capable of lateral movement therein, a plunger within said punch adapted to torce the article adapted to be placed within the recess in place against the tendency of the pin to expel the same, means maintaining a deinite. spaced relationship between the punch and die, and means operative upon longitudinal movement of the second bloclr and the die, to cause the punch to move laterally in several directions.
10. A trimming die comprising a base block, a member having means to support an article therein mounted in said base block, a member cooperating with said last mentioned member carrying a punch movlable only in a horizontal plane, posts mounted in said block cooperating with operative portions on said horizontally movable punch to operate the same and an alined pin and soci-:et in said carrying member and said horizontally movable punch to prevent inaccurate assembling of the parts.
