IMPROVEMENT IN REED-ORGAN ATTACHMENTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,356, dated April 7, 1874; application filed October 1, 1873.

To all fwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, I'IOsEA Q. STAPLES, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Connection with Reed or Cabinet Organs and Piano-Fortes; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Much annoyance is often experienced by performers upon the cabinet-organ and piano, and also by vocalists who are accompanied by either of the above-nanied instruments, on account 0f the lack of sufficient light upon the music.

I have endeavored to obviate this difficulty in this invention, which is described in detail below. y

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of a cabinet-organ having my attachment, e being the cabinet-organ, and b being standards attached to the rear side of the same, and supporting shelves c c c, intended for music books, Ste. Fig. 2 is a plan of the under side of the shelf o, showing the arrangement of the device for supporting the lamp. Fig. 3 is a side view of my lamp support, showing the slide in section.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

Attached to the under side of the shelf c are strips of wood l d', extending the full length of the said shelf, and beveled so as to form a dovetailed groove. A slide, c, is placed in the groove thus formed, which will, of course,

slide back and forth the length of the shelf c, asdesired. Attached to the slide c by means of a rivet or screw, f, and turning upon said rivet, is a bar, g, which, at gf, extends downward and forward, and terminates, at g, in a support of any proper shape for a lamp. By moving'the slide e, and by turning the support g g g, the lamp may be placed in any needed position, so as to throw light where it is most desirable.

It is intended that the shelf c and the support g g g shall be placed at a sufficient height to admit of the support for the lamp being swunginto any position, whether the piano-lid is closed or open.

The support in various positions will be seen in broken lines, Fig. 2.

Thus, in addition to whatever light there may be in' the room, a local light is placed at the service of the performer, to be used as needed. The lamp is designed to be used with a shade, so that, while throwing light upon the music, the eyes ofthe performer are protected.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with a shelf, c, or equivalent, of the lamp-support g g g", attached to, turning, and sliding under, said shelf by means ofthe rivet f, slide c, and strips d d', the whole 'arranged substantially as described, for use in connection with a reed-organ or pianoforte.
