Description

H. n. STAPLES.
Parlor-Organ or Piano-Attachments.
No.149,355, PatentedApriimaM.
EosEA o. STAPLES, 0E LYNN, MASSAcEUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PARLOR-ORGAN OR PIANO ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,355, dated April 7,
1874 application filed September 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOSEA Q. STAPLES, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valu able Improvement in Combining with a Reed or Cabinet Organ or Piano-Forte certain Convenienees for M usic, Books, 85e.; and l do hereby declare that the itollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is intended to provide a proper place for sheet-music, music-books, and like artieles liable to be used in coimeetion with. a piano forte or cabinet organ. The custom which to a large extent prevails of depositing such articles in or upon the instrument is a poor one, inasmuch as it is not only an incon venient place for music and music-books, but the placing or' them upon a piano-forte is liaA ble to injure the cover et' the instrument. My invention entirely obviates the necessity of such action.
In the accompanying drawings, 'Figure l is a view in perspective of a cabinet-organ havattachment. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the lower portion of one of the standards or supports of the shelves, showing the method of attaching to the instrument.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
a c are shelves, (of which there may be any number,) placed at a sufficient height to allow the cover b to swing back, and supported by two standards, c c. These standards c o are made of the proper shape to give room to the cover b as it swings back, and are attached to the back side of the instrument by means of the slots d d', the heads d d of which slip over the heads of screws inserted in the instrument. The standards are then pushed down, so that the slots d hold the standards in place. By merely lifting the standards, the slot-heads d! allow the screw-heads to pass through them, and the whole bracket is released and may be removed. No injury is done to the instrument, all that is necessary being four screws in the back side out of sight.
If deemed desirable, when my device is attached to a piano the standards c c may be carried down to and bent under the bottom of the piano and attached thereto, instead of being fastened to the back side.
This attachment may be quite inexpensive, or it is susceptible of ornamentation to any degree, while its appearance in any case is not objectionable, but rather the reverse.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a piano-forte or parlororgan, the bracket a c o, constructed and arranged substantially as described, so as to allow room for the Swingin g back of the cover of the instrument, and attached t0 the same, as and for the purpose hereinbefore specied.
HOSEA Q. STAPLES.
Vitnesses:
WM. H. HoDGnoN, JOHN STAPLES.
