UNIT-ED STATESv JAMES E. BURDEN, or WORCESTER, rinssecnusn'mrs."
-CENTERING DEVICE.
Application filed November 27, 1920. SerialNo. 426,868.l
To aZZ wimmelt may concern: 1
Be it knownthat I, JAMES E. BRDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have in? vented new and useful Improvements in' Centering Devices, of which the following is a specification. 4
This invention relates to improvements in geometrical instruments; and, more particularly to center finding devices.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and highly eicient device in the nature of a simplified tool that can be carried about in a persons vest pocket so as to be ready for instant service whenever required. y
Another object of my invention is to provide a simplek center finder constructed of very few parts that enables the center of round stock to be very readily and easily obtained without measurement.
With the above and other objects in view my invention consists in the arrangement, combination, and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification and then more particular y pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts indicated in the respective views,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention,
Figure 2 is an edge elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan View of my invention,
Figure 4: shows the stock adapted to be centered by means of my invention,
Figure 5 is a cross section through my invention,
Figure 6 shows the manner in which the round stock can be centered,
Figure 7 shows my instrument applied to round stock,
Figure 8 shows another detail in the ap` plication of my instrument to round stock, and
Figures 9 and 10 show top and bottom plan views respectively of my invention showing stock applied properly. y
Referring to the drawings which are merely illustrative of my invention A designates a sheet metal frame in the shape of a half circle and an equilateral quadrilateral cut diagonally and a longitudinal sheet metal strip B is secured to said frame at itscentral median line. "'Myfinvention ,thus i consists of two vsimple parts.A
The -frame A1 has ia `pair ofvoppositely inclined sides 1 and 2 which converge. to a point `at the lower end'thereof, kwhile the upper ends form an arcuate portion?) which integrally connects these twooppositely inclined sides land 2 as shown clearly in the` 'figuresy The longitudinal strip Bft has a bevelededge 9 secured flush with the termi-V l `nal edge of the side 2 of the frame A being secured at this point by 'a rivet .8 or in any other desirable manner by means of which it may .be secured to the. frame A by the flush connection. 10 designates the point of the strip 11 where it coincides with the point of the triangle of the device.
rivet 5 that enters the frame A so thatits outer arcuate edge 6 will be lushwith the arcuate portion 3. While thus positioned the edge 11 ofthis strip will bisect'the triangle of the same and particularly pass through the center of the instrument so that the edges 11b and 12 of this triangle will be equally distant from the edge 11 of the strip B. l
C designates the instep represented by the thickness of the main trame A. Any round object or polygonal object is adapted to be introduced into the instep'C, Fig. 5, so as to rest upon the strip B and so as to rest also at the opposite edges and at two points or two edges against the inclined edges 11h and 12-of the triangular portion of the frame. Take the round object 122*v as an example; after it is positioned so as to lie upon the strip B and made to contact the edges llband 12 as aforesaid it will be found that the edge 11 `of the `strip Z7 will The strip B 'is secured at its oppositeendby a pass through the center of this round object 11'of the strip B; then by turning the object around ranother line will be similarly scratched while the object still engages the strip 11 and contacts at two points against the inclined edges 11b and 12, this line being designated as at 14. These lines or any other lines converge as at 19 and intersectl v at the center of the object as at 16. ,By means of the punch the mechanic can then lforma niche in the center of the object in a well known manner.
' ent is:
modifications may be employed, Without departing in principle from the details l of construction herein disclosed. y
What I desire to cilaini by Letters Pat- A cefilteringv device' of the character described including tvv'o parts, one part cornprising a sheet metal frame designed in the shape of a halfY of an equilateral 'quadrilateral cut diagonally and a half circle respectively', the other part comprising an elongated Y metal strip longitudinally arranged with respect to the iirstY mentioned part and being provided with la bevelled edge at one end which is secured flush with the terminal edge of one side of the frame with the point of the bevelled edge terminating with the point of the apex of the half quadri-lateral portion, the opposite end of the strip having an arcuate shaped edge and being secured to the half circledportion so that the longestside edge of the strip divides the first mentioned *part into equal parts.:
ln Witness whereof he has hereunto set his hand this tenth day of Januarxlf.y 1920.
i JAMES E BUR-DEN. Y Attested: v VVILLIAMYE. BAFF,
