annex zwrcx, or BROOKLYN, new roan.-
' I comsrnucrrcnor rim-cerium Application filed February To. all whom it may conbern: J Be it known that I,'HARRY ZWICK, a citi- .zen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of'Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New Yoi'k, have mvented -certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction ofFile-Cabinet Drawers, of which the following is a specifi- I an end portion of a box made from the cation. I
My improvements relate to, the manufac- 'ture of boxes out of card-board, so called, covering the various grades thereof as known to the trade, or out of any analogous fibrous board material 5 and particularly to the making of rectangular boxes out of onepiece body blanks, the upsettingor folding appearance, and also ehdanger the integrity of the portions of the wrap spanning and covering these corner grooves, which ob viously afford no support for the overlapping portion of the wrap.
The .main object is to obviate this difiiculty, in so far at least as the ends of the boxare concerned, and to-afiord a flush rec- H tangular finish thereto, of the-=full .width of the box, whereby the bevel-edge effect is eliminated; a true rectangular corner effect is produced; andthe wrap is supported against extraneous pressure;and whereby, also, If-
simplify and cheapen the cost of production,
' and reinforce and strengthen the box structure' in a unitary sense, all as hereinafter more fully set forth. To-this end theinvention consists in the specific construction and arrangement of arts described and claimed, adistinctive eature being the use of auxiliary end plates, of full box width and-height, which overla the end edge grooves incidental to the fo ding or setting up of the body blank, as herein shown and described. I
My construction resultsin a s onger box, better adapted to withstand t 0 require- I ents, of use,than when the box is formed in the, older, methods. I j
In the accompanyin drawings I exemplify a'p'ractical embo iment of m invention as applied-to a box of the in ex cabinet drawer type, although I do not limit' mys'e1f to this or any particular type of rec- 17, 1923. Serial No. 619358.
parts of the box body, to which my auxiliary Fig. 2, is an exterior perspective view of blank sections shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, is an interior perspective view of one end portion of a box so made;
so made; 7 r
I Fig. 5, is a transverse section of the box; f Fig. 6, is an elevation of one end of my improved box; I Fig- 7, is a detail view of the blank of a box of this character as heretofore made;
Fig. 8, is a top view of one extremity of the old form of box. Fig. 9, is a sectional detail taken-upon plane of line 9-9, Fig. 8;'
.Fig. 10, is a sectional detail taken upon piane of line 1O- 10, Fig. 11, with the end ard included;
/Fig. 11,
circumscribing end boards a, a, are obtained,
this method of blank formation representing the utilization'of the material to the best isan end view' of my box constIrucrtlon, without the end board.
Fig. 4, is a top view of one end of the box I advantage. In this figure the dotted lines I represent the. lines of fold of the main or body portion of, the blank.- A The folding, or upsetting of the main blank I), 8, 8e, 6', on the ines indicated,
which are scored on the under side of'the blank to facilitate the bending of themate- .rial as preseribed, results in the formation. of exterior angle grooves g', g, which are eventually covered and closed by the wrap w. But the corner finish thus attained is.
bevel-shaped or chamfered, as shown more gprticularly at z, in Figs. 5 and 8 of the awings. This is especially objectionable at the end cprners, not onl on account of 'alppearancefbut' more particularly because t e an ar grooves g, g, is .un -su'ported, so thatslight extraneouspressure a o ng these rtion of the wrap w, covering said.
. lines of angular band is apt to rupture the wrap and create a ragged appearance, at the same time exposing the end edges of the side members ;s, s, of the box body for contact with, say, the edges of the drawer. space in thecabinet to which the box belongs, or
with other extraneous objects. Furtherit more, this vulnerability of the end corners of the box or drawer detract from the strength, utility, and durability of the whole structure.
' grooves 9,
Where the box is made in the old way of a one pieceblank, asshown in Figs. 7 and 8 dicated in gs. 8 and 9, which are objectionable for reasons herein-before stated.
By my provision of independent auxiliary V c'ircumscri'bing end boards a, a, I am enabled .to so form the end folds e, e, in such manner that they restupon the floor or bottom member I), flush with the end edge thereof,
as will be understood "by reference particularly to Figs. 10 and 11, of drawings,-the
spaces 0., 0, representing the socketsfor the ends of thelon'gitudinal card rests 0', 0', usually providedin index boxes or drawers of the character designated,'and d, d, being' the socket holes for the ends of the usual card rod d',these latter features being only incidental to the index box or tray herein'used as an illustration of a practical embodiment of my invention; the essential feature of whichis the provision'of the independent eircumscribing end boards, a, a, of the full exterior. area of the box in cross section, as illustrated in Figs; 2, 3, 4 and 6 of thedrawings. P
These independent full dimension end boards a, a, not'only isolate and protect the side end grooves, g, 9, but they are especially eficacious in connection with the end structure of; box body shown. in Fig.'11,since they are pasted, not only to the flaps e, 9, but also-to the end edges of the box bottom 6, thereby insuring. strength andintegrity of box structure, considered in a, unitary Another practical advantage attained by my independent full dimension end boar s anteater a, a, is that they maybe passed through a pasting machine preparatory to attachment to the end over-laps and bottom $11" the box fbody, thereby dispensing with h d pasting in this respect, and greatly facilitating the rectangular endcorpers, together with reinforced end construction.
