Description

SHEET FOR ASSEMBLING A DRAWER
Field of the invention
The present disclosure relates to a sheet for assembling at least part of a drawer and to a method of manufacturing the same. It further relates to a drawer and to a chest of drawers.
Background
Pieces of furniture may be provided in kits for assembly by the consumer, or someone hired by the consumer, at the point of use. Such assembly typically takes place in a non-industrial environment, for example, a home, a living room, an office, a workplace, a home office, or the like, manually, using no or only simple tools. For drawers, it is a challenge to provide such kits that are lightweight and compact for transport, while still providing an assembled drawer that is rigid and durable for daily use.
Summary
Therefore, it is an object of the present disclosure to provide a sheet for assembling at least part of a drawer fulfilling those requirements.
To this end, according to a first aspect, there is provided a sheet for assembling at least part of a drawer, comprising a base sheet of rigid material and a cover of thin, bendable material, with the cover at least partially covering at least one face of the base sheet. Moreover, the sheet comprises a plurality of elongated folding regions, for folding the drawer, each of the folding regions being configured for folding the sheet at an angle and comprising an angled cutout in the sheet and, where applicable, in the cover, at a first face of the sheet, for folding the sheet at the said angle. The sheet has one or more double folding regions, each comprising a first folding region of the plurality of folding regions; and a second said folding region of the plurality of folding regions, located immediately adjacent to the first folding region, for forming a double-layered region of the sheet as part of the drawer. A double-layered region thus formed using such a double folding region allow various structurally reinforcing regions and functional regions of the drawer to be formed through folding of the sheet. Such regions may contribute to the rigidity and function of the assembled drawer, while still not taking up significant space during transport.
At least one of the folding regions may further comprise a notch in the base sheet, at an opposite face of the sheet, preferably right opposite to the angled cutout, where the cover runs, with the folding region in an unfolded state, flat above the notch, the notch being sized as to create, with the folding region folded at the said angle, a bending space for the cover.
Hereby, the notch may be sized to that the cover runs along an equal distance before and after folding, so that no longitudinal strain is put on the cover during folding. This allows for the use of relatively non-elastic and/or non-deformable materials as the cover.
Both faces of the base sheet may be at least partially covered by a cover of thin, bendable material. This allows for folding regions and double folding regions folding in opposite directions, for increased flexibility of design of the sheet.
For at least one of the folding regions, the angle may be a 90-degree angle.
At least one of the one or more double folding regions may be arranged so that the said folding region and the second folding region allow a direct 180-degree fold of the sheet. Such 180-degree folding could be the result of two folds at 90-degree angle each. Also possible is that the two folds have a different angle, for example one fold has an 80-degree angle and the other has a 100-degree angle. Alternatively, for example, a double folding region, arranged to provide a folding angle of less than 180 degrees may create structurally reinforcing bulge in the sheet, adjacent to the double layered region.
The sheet may comprise a double folding region located adjacent to an edge of said sheet for forming a said double-layered region functioning as a structurally reinforcing region at an upper end of a side of said drawer. Such an arrangement may further contribute to the rigidity of the assembled drawer, the increased rigidity allowing for the use of a relatively thin sheet, saving space and weight during transport.
The sheet may have a said double folding region and, adjacent to the double folding region, a folding region for folding the sheet in an opposite direction to that of the double folding region, so as to form a said doubled- layered region between the double folding region and the folding region, for forming a sliding flange of the drawer.
This allows, through an appropriate choice of a low-friction material for the cover, for sliding between the drawer and a cabinet, such as a cabinet of a chest of drawers, a bed-side table or of a wardrobe, to be achieved without the need for any extra fittings at the side of the drawer, lowering complexity and cost. It may as well further contribute to the rigidity of the drawer.
The double folding region for forming the double-layered region functioning as the said structurally reinforcing region and the double folding region for forming the double-layered region for forming the said sliding flange may fold in opposite directions.
This may allow the structurally reinforcing region not to be in the way for the region forming the flange, allowing for compact packing of the sheet during transport.
The double-layered region may be pre-folded and may preferably be fixed, preferably such fixing being a fixing arrangement selected among glued, welded, melted, taped by double-sided adhesive tape, stapled, screwed, and combinations thereof, more preferably being one selected among gluing, welding, and taping by double-sided adhesive tape.
This allows for ease of installation by the consumer and compact transport.
The thin, bendable material forming the cover may comprise a foil, preferably a plastic foil, a paper foil, or a metal foil.
The thin, bendable material forming the cover may comprise textile.
The base sheet may comprise a wood-based material, such as an HDF board, an MDF board, a solid wood sheet, i.e. a plank wood sheet, a plywood board, and/or a wood particle board. Alternatively, or additionally, the sheet may comprise metal, such as steel, plastic, and/or paper.
The thickness of the base sheet may be less than 7 mm, such as less than 5 mm, or even 3 mm or less. Such thin sheets have the benefit of reducing the weight and cost of the piece of furniture manufactured therefrom, and by means of the one or more double folding regions required rigidity of the piece of furniture can nevertheless be obtained. The thickness of the sheet may be 0.5 mm or more, such as 1 mm or more. Such thicknesses of the sheet provide a sufficient mechanical strength of the sheet. Fig. 1b shows a double folding region.
Fig. 2 shows, in a perspective view, a sheet and a drawer short end.
Figs. 3a and 3b show, in respective perspective and side views, the sheet of Fig. 2 folded in a transport configuration. Fig. 4 shows, in a perspective view, a drawer component comprising a folded sheet of Fig. 2.
Figs. 5a and 5b show, in respective perspective views, sliding flanges formed from the sheet of Fig. 2.
Detailed description
Fig. 1a shows the steps of providing 100 of a folding region 14 at a base sheet 2.
At 102, a base sheet 2 of rigid material is provided. The base sheet 2 may be formed from any relatively rigid, i.e. , stiff, material, for example comprising a wood based material, such as an FIDF board, an MDF board, a solid wood sheet, i.e. a plank wood sheet, a plywood board, or a wood particle board., According to further alternative embodiments the sheet may be or comprise a plastic sheet, a paper board, or a metal sheet.
The thickness of the base sheet 2 may be less than 7 mm, such as less than 5 mm, or even 3 mm or less.
The thickness of the base sheet 2 may be 0.5 mm or more, such as 1 mm or more.
Particularly preferable is that the thickness of the base sheet 2 lies in the range 0.5-5 mm, more preferably 1-4 mm, and most preferably 1-3 mm.
The base sheet 2 comprises a first face 10, shown as a bottom face, of the base sheet 2, and a second face 6, shown as a top face, of the base sheet 2.
Optionally, at 104, the base sheet 2 may, using methods and tools known per se to the skilled person, be provided with a notch 4, running in a direction normal to the cross-sectional plane of Fig. 1a. The notch 4 is provided on the second face 6 of the base sheet 2. The notch 4 may have a radius, or, more generally a characteristic lateral extent, such as depth, width, etc., r, which may be chosen as to create a bending space for the thin, bendable material (of. 106 below) with the folding region folded at an angle (of. 108 below), so that the thin, bendable material runs tight around the bend thus created without being stretched (of. 110 below). For example, as shown, the notch 4 may comprise two circular sectors each of radius r, which, in a folded state (cf. 110 below) provide a single circular sector arc of radius r for the thin, bendable material of the cover.
At 106, at least the second face 6 of the base sheet 2 is covered by a thin bendable material, creating a cover 8a, using methods and tools known per se to the skilled person. The second face 6 of the base sheet 2 may, as shown, be completely covered by the thin, bendable material, or partially covered by the thin, bendable material in a region surrounding the folding region. Thus, the cover 8a at least partially covers at least one face 6 of the base sheet 2.
If, at 104, the second face 6 of the base sheet 2 was provided with the notch 4, here, at 106, the cover 8a may be provided so that the cover 8a runs flat above the notch 4.
Optionally, still at 106, the first face 10 of the base sheet 2, opposite to the second face 6 may, as shown, as well be covered by a thin, bendable material 8b, partially or completely. Thus, both faces of the base sheet 2 may at least partially be covered by covers 8a, 8b.
The thin, bendable material of cover 8a and/or cover 8b may, for example, comprise a foil, preferably a plastic foil, a paper foil, or a metal foil.
The thin, bendable material of cover 8a and/or 8b may also, for example, comprise textile.
At 108, the first face 10 of the base sheet 2, opposite to the second face 6, is provided with an angled cutout 12 for folding the sheet at an angle, using tools as methods known per se to the skilled person. For example, as shown, the base sheet may be provided with a 90-degree cutout 12 for folding the sheet at a 90-degree angle. The angled cutout 12 runs parallel to the cross-sectional plane of Fig. 1a.
If, at 106, the first face 10 of the base sheet 2 was provided with a cover 8b, here, at 108, the angled cutout 12 may be cut through the cover 8b, so that the base sheet 2 and the cover 8b are provided with the angled cutout 12.
If, at 104, the second face 4 of the base sheet 2 was provided with the notch 4, here, at 108, the angled cutout 12 may be provided at the first face 10 right opposite to the notch 4 at the second face 6, running parallel to the notch 4. Optionally, the notch 4 and the cutout 12 may join each other.
Thus, the sheet 2 has been provided with an elongated folding region 14 for folding the sheet 2 at an angle, comprising an angled cutout 12 in the sheet 2 and, where applicable, in the cover 8b, at a first face 10 of the sheet, for folding the sheet at the said angle, wherein the folding region 14 may optionally comprise a notch 4 in the base sheet 2, at an opposite face 6 of the sheet 2, right opposite to the angled cutout 12, wherein the cover 8a runs, with the folding region 14 in an unfolded state, flat above the notch 4, the notch 4 being sized as to create, with the folding region folded at the said angle, a bending space for the cover 8a.
At 110, the folding region 14 is shown in a folded state. Each of the two faces of the angled cutout (cf. 108) abut each outer, defining the example 90- degree angle.
As shown in Fig. 1b, at 108’, folding regions may be combined in double folding regions 16, 16a, 16b (cf. also Figs 2, 3a, and 3b), each double folding region 16, 16a, 16b comprising a first folding region 14a (cf. Fig. 1a); and a second said folding region 14b, located immediately adjacent to the first folding region, for forming a double-layered region 18, 20 (cf. Figs 3a, and 3b) of the sheet. Such double folding region may be arranged, as shown at 110’ of Fig. 1 b, so that the two folding regions making up the double folding region allow a direct 180-degree fold of the sheet. The 180-degree fold may be achieved by each of the first folding region and the second folding region, through their respective angled cutouts, providing a 90-degree fold, as shown in Fig. 1b and as will be described in the following. Alternatively, any combination of folding angles, such as 100-degree bend of the first folding region and an 80-degree bend of the second folding region, resulting in a combined 180-degree fold, is possible.
Alternatively, for example, a double folding region, arranged to provide a folding angle of less than 180 degrees, in combination with one or more further folding regions, may create structurally reinforcing bulge in the sheet, adjacent to the double-layered region. Fig. 2 shows a sheet 200 for assembling part of a drawer, and a drawer short end 202. The sheet 200 comprises a plurality of folding regions 14 for folding the drawer, in particular at least one double folding region as described above. Figs 3a and 3b show the sheet 200 folded in a transport configuration, wherein Fig. 3b offers a side view of the left part of the sheet as seen in Fig. 3a. Fig. 4 shows the sheet 200 folded into part of a drawer 400.
The sheet 200 may be provided as comprised in a kit for assembly of a drawer by a consumer, or a person hired by a consumer, at a point of use. Such a point of use may for example be a private home, an office, a home office, a public area, such as a restaurant or a school. Further, the kit may be adapted for manual assembly.
The sheet 200 comprises a pair of (single) folding regions 22 for folding the respective two sides 24 of the drawer at 90-degree angles with respect to the base 26 of the drawer.
Further, the sheet 200 may, as shown in Fig. 3b, comprise at least one double folding region 16a located adjacent to an edge of the sheet for forming, in a folded state, a double-layered region functioning as a structurally reinforcing region 18 at an upper end of a side 24 of the drawer. As shown in Fig, 3a, the sheet 200 may comprise such a double folding region 16a at each lateral end of the sheet 200, for a total of two such double folding regions 16a, one at each side 24 of the drawer. At each lateral end of the sheet 200, the double folding region 16a thus allows for the formation, in a folded state, of such a double-layered structurally reinforcing region 18.
Further, the sheet 200 may comprise a double folding region 16b, adjacent to the base 26, and adjacent, with some spacing, to the double folding region the (single) folding region 22, with the folding regions of the double folding region 16b each arranged for folding in an opposite direction to the folding region 22. As shown in Fig. 3a, the sheet may comprise a respective such arrangement of double folding region 16b combined with folding region 22 at each lateral side of the base 26.
Such arrangement allows for the formation, in a folded state, of a sliding flange 20, as detailed in Figs 5a and 5b. The sliding flange 20 may slide against a side structure in a chest of drawers, for moving the drawer in and out of the chest of drawers. For example, the sliding flange 20 may slide against a horizontal groove 502 formed in a side wall 504 of the chest of drawers (Fig. 5a), or against a horizontal groove in a separate fitting 506 attached to the side wall 504 (Fig. 5b).
As mentioned, Figs 3a and 3b show the sheet 200 folded in a transport configuration. In the transport configuration, the two sides 24 may, as shown, have been pre-folded along the respective double folding regions 16b, to lie flat against the base 26, allowing for a very compact configuration.
In the transport configuration, as shown, one or more of the double layered regions 18 and 20 may have been pre-folded. Further, the two layers in each double-layered region may have been fixed to each other, for example glued, welded, melted, taped by double-sided adhesive tape, stapled, screwed, and combinations thereof.
Further, as shown, the double folding regions 16a and the double folding regions 16b may fold in opposite directions, so that the reinforcing sections 18, if pre-folded and/or fixed, do not prevent the respective sides 24 from lying flat against the base 26.
Fig. 4 shows, as mentioned, the sheet 200 folded into part of a drawer 400. A drawer short end 202 forms a back of the drawer, attached to the base 26 and the sides 24 of the sheet 200. Further, a front piece 204, illustrated schematically in Fig. 4, may be attached to the base 26 and the sides 24 of the sheet 200, for example by means of furniture attachment elements 402, opposite to the drawer short end 202, to complete the drawer.
Thus, the drawer may be at least in part assembled from the sheet 200 as described above, where at least a part of the bottom, ie. , the base 26 and of the lateral sides, i.e. , the sides 24, of the drawer are at least partly formed from the sheet 200, still more preferably the entire bottom 26 is formed from the sheet and/or the entire lateral sides 24 are formed from the sheet, as shown.
In case of the sheet 200 being provided as a kit for assembly, for example by a consumer, at the point of use, the drawer short end 202 and/or the front piece 204 may be provided as part of the kit. The drawer may be comprised in a chest of drawers, comprising at least one drawer as described above. The drawer may also be used in other pieces of furniture that include one or more drawers, such as bed-side-tables, wardrobes, desks, pedestals, tables, etc. A method of manufacturing the sheet 200 for assembling at least part of a drawer may thus comprise providing a base sheet 2 of rigid material and providing the base sheet 2 with a plurality of elongated folding regions 14,
14a, 14b, 22 as described above in conjunction with Figs. 1a and 1b, wherein such providing comprises providing the sheet 200 with one or more double folding regions 16, 16a, 16b, each comprising a first folding region; and immediately adjacent to said first folding region, a second folding region, for forming a double-layered region 18, 20 of said sheet 200 as part of the drawer.
The inventive concept has mainly been described above with reference to example embodiments. However, as is readily appreciated by a person skilled in the art, other embodiments than the ones disclosed above are equally possible within the scope of the inventive concept, as defined by the appended patent claims.
