GRACE PRICE, orivronm may, VIRGINIA.
CONTAINER.
Application-filed March 27, 1923. Serial No.1628,084.
To all who-m t may concern:
Be it known that I, GRACE PRICE, a citizen of the United' States, residing at Mount Airy, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented a new `and useful Container, of which vthe .following is a specification. 1
This invention is a shipping receptacle in which to ship parcel post, Vexpress and similar matter. f
One of the objects of the invention Vis to provide a container designed particularly for shipmentof dairy products, .so constructed that the contents may beconveniently packed and unpacked. `AV further object isto lprovide a device in which 'butter may -be 'shipped in `pack-ages .of desirable size, and vin which waste andthe labor of packing is practically prevented. A further object is to provide means by which butter packages `fmay be readily lifted -out of the container, and at the same time be adequately protected from `contamination in handling. A further object is to pro-r vide a container of the `character mentioned, constructed of separable parts, and means for iirmly uniting the @parts against ac-v cidental separation. l
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed outl in the claims.
In the accompanying Vdrawings Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a container `constructed in accordance with the invention. Figure V2 is a vertical secf tional view illustratingthe container packed with ybutter. Figure 3 is a similar. View showing the container packed 'withfbo'th eggs `and butter; Figure "ll is la `detail perspective View illustrating thebutter package. Figure 5` is a detail View illustrating the connection vbetween the fabric wrapper and the butter-supporting disk.
VReferring tothe drawing, the container which is `of approximate barrel-shape con1- prises two sections l() and 11, suitably braced by hoops 12, and 12a. yEachsection is formed 4with va head 13 and flares out- Wardly to an open end 14. The open ends of both sections 10 and 1v1 are provided with complemental interengaging portions 15, fof any desired "construction, for Aseparably uniting the sections, screw threads being villustrated for cthis purpose.
each vdisk Vhaving secured vfabric-17, which is designed to venclose `the For convenienthandling `of butter and the like,V .a plurality of circular supporting-disks 16, of a diameter correspondn ing `to the interior diameter .of tlie section Within which it .is located, are employed, thereto `a woven contents of the package. The fabric may As shown, the disk is provided -with`fal container section, withthe fabric lining or wrapper lying contiguous fto the `vwalliof the section. `Butter or other material is then H packed within the space surrounded by @the fabric 17, and upon :the exposed sur-face'o'f the disk 16, in much the same 'manner'as one would `lill an ordinary butter mold. When the desired `'quantity of material has been packed, for example enough :to make a pound package, vthe kfree 'end portions 'of the fabric lining 17, are. folded down so'a's to flit over and vcover 'the exposed surface of .thematerial, :thereby ,completely -enclosingthe package. A second/disk 16 fis Vthen placed lupon lthe finished package andthe same process repeated. In the construe; tion showneach lsection 410 and lil fof Va size to contain two packages of l'imi-"form weight. I Y l f.
After the'butter has been packed in both sections, the lopen -endsofi'the sections rare brought VtogetherV and united bythe screw threads 15, and the The sections Ymay. be locked against Iaccidental disengagement in any'jdes'ired Inanner. In' 'the' `drawings is 'shown an' address tag 22, of'a' size'fto fitwithin the space'ibetween the contiguous hoops 12,.said :address tag having means for 'separably engaging suitable securing fdevices carried loyfthe respective sections "10 and 111. A he securing devices --for fthe address ftagr are fof such anature that theftag'will not 4become' ylaccidenta'lpackage is ready to fship.
ly disengaged, and yet it'may be readily separated from the container when it is desired to gain access to the contents thereof.
When it is desired to unpack the contents ofthe receptacle, the sections 10 and 11: are disengaged in a manner which will be readily understood from the drawing, and placed upon a tabie or other support, resting upon the heads 13. Then operator then grasps the folded over ends 21, of theY tubular fabric 17, and lifts outgrthe topniost package intact. The other packages may be successivelyy removed in the same way. The covering ends of the fabric are then moved back and the exposed flat surface of the package may be placed upon a plate or the like, and the circular disk subsequently lifted, leaving the package intact upon the plate, with or without the ornamental print, according to whether or not the disk is provided with the ornamental surface 20.
By employing the fabric lining, it is possible to lift the package out intact, and the fabric may be unwrapped from the contents of the package without adhering thereto, it being an inherent characteristic of the fabric that when moist it wili not adhere to butter or the like. If the butter should be soft at the time that it is desired to unpack it, the container sections may be separated and temporarily placed in a refrigerator, or other cold place until the butter is sufficiently hard to handle.
if desired, jams, jelly, preserves and the like, may be packed and shipped in a similar manner, provided they are placed within the package formed by the disk 16 and fabric 17, before congealing.
If desired the container may be made to serve the purpose of shipping eggs as iliustrated in Figure 3. Referring to said figure,
v one of the sections is shown as provided with corrugated partitions 25 of a ywell-known type, dividing the section into cells. Thus, it is possible to ship both eggs and butter in varying quantities. For instance, the eggs are packed in layers of four each, so that the container illustrated may easily be employed for shipping one pound of butter and one dozen eggs, or the relative quantities may be varied as desired.
The advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the kart to which it appertains.' By employing a container constructed of two separable parts which may be readily united, a receptacle is provided which may be conveniently packed and-unpacked. The fabric lining is of particular advantage in that it eliminates a great deal of the labor in handling, as well 'as the wasteof butter, or other material, because it serves to prevent the material from adhering to the walls of the container. It also permits the material to be removed from the container in uniform masses of predetermined size, and avoids the necessity of re moving it in unsightly hunks, or theineces sity of using a spoon if the material is soft. s
t also solves a way of lifting the package of butter out of the container, as well as providing a'ineans for insuring complete'separation and non-adherence of the superposed packages.V
YBy employing the address tag for preventing relative 'rotation of the sections 10 and 11, a simple device is provided for preventing accidental separation of the sections. At the saine time, it serves the additional function of'providing suitable means for the address to which the container is to be shi ped.
