To all 'whom it may concern.'
Beit known that I, CHARLES HAvLisIL'a citizen of the United States, residing 1n the city of Elkhart, county of Elkhart, Inf. diana, have invented certain new and use-l ful Improvements in Punch-Press Guards, of which the following is aV specification.
The invention relates vto safety means for machines having a reciprocating part which coacts with a stationary part to produce articles by punching, stamping, or the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a guard adapted to screen the space between the reciprocating part and the stationary part upon reciprocation so as to.
prevent injury to the hands of a careless operator.
It is a further object of the invention tov provide improved means for arranging the guard in functional position fduringoperation of the machine. l

It is obvious that the spring 25 being secured to the stationary screw 24 and engaging the member 26 of the cam has a tendency to maintain the cam in the upper position, as shown in Fig. 5, and acts as a return spring when the' cam has been displaced downwardly. A link 27 is secured to the threaded member 26 at one end and is articulated at the other end to a foot lever or pedal 27, pivotally mounted in the press frame. A link 28 connects the pedal with the tripping mechanism of the machine and as these parts are well known in the arty a further disclosure thereof is thought to be unnecessary.
From the foregoing follows that upon depression of the pedal 27 the cam 14 is forced downwardly, overcoming the tension of the spring 25 and upon release of the treadle 27 the spring 25 acts to return the cam to the upper or inoperative position.
The casing 11 is formed with a horizontal bore 29 in which a push rod 30 is mounted for horizontal reciproca-tion. The rod 30 is ecpiipped at its inner end with a roller 31 ich bears on the inner faces of the cam and which by the cam face 17 is ejected for a purpose presently to be described. The outer end of the rod 30 is formed with an aperture 32 and apin 33 at a pivotal point of the lazy-tongs extends through the aperture 32 so as to couple the lazy-tongs with the push rod 30. A spring 34 is secured at one end to the pin 33 and on its other end a. to a pin 35, laterally projecting from the casing and constituting a return spring.
From the foregoing it is obvious that upon depression of the pedal 27 the cam 14 is lowered whereby the cam edge 17, bearing on the roller 31, ejects the push rod 30, causing the guard to be expanded. Upon release of the pedal the spring 25 will raise the cam and the spring 34 will cause not onlythe lazy-tongs to contract but concomitantly will force the rod A30 into the casing in engagement with the cam. Attention is called to the fact that the 'expanded position of the tongs is maintained by the flat face 16 of the cam after the descent of the ram or of the pedal 27, which by the agency of the link 28 effects the ascent of the ram. The horizontally reciprocating guard when expanding will push the hands of the operator out of the path of the ram, if he has failed to withdraw them in time, and. access to the ram is not possible until it has been raised.
Whiie the drawings disclose the preferred embodimentk of the invention, numerous changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and all changes constituting departures within the scope ofthe invent-ion are included as set out in the appended claims.
I claim: f
1. The combination with a. press having a movable member cooperating with a stationary member, of a casing secured to said stationary member, a guard secured to the casing and unfoldable across the approach to the movable member and foldable to clear the approach to said movable member', and reciprocatory cam operated means arranged in said casing for actuating said guard.
2. The combination with a press having a movable member cooperating with a sta tionary member, of a casing secured to said stationary member, a guard secured tosaid casin unfoldable across the approach to thev mova le member and foldable to clear the approach to said movable member, and camoperated means arranged in said casing for actuating said guard.
3. The combination with a press having a movable member cooperating with a stationary member, means for controlling the operation of said press, a casing secured to said stationary member, a guard secured to said casing and unfoldable across the approach to the movable member and foldable to clear the approach to said movable member, cam-operated means arranged in said casing for actuating said guard, and means' connecting said cam-0perated means with said press controlling means.
The combination with a press having a movable member cooperating with a stationary member, means for controlling the operation of said press, a casing secured to said stationary member, a. guard secured to said casing and unfoldable across the ap proach to the movable member and foldable to clear the approach to said movable member, cam-operated means arranged in said casing for actuating said guard, and a link connecting said camoperated mea-ns with said press controlling means. v
5. A guard for pressesl comp-rising a casing adapted to be secured to the frame of a built press, lparallel bars one'of which is secured to said casing out of the path of the movable press member and the other is movable across the approach to said member, lazy-tongs connecting said bars, and' cam-operated means arranged in said' casmg for actuating said movable bar.
