Description

PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. VENNER, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-EXTINGUISHING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,269, dated March 31,1874; application filed October 4, 1873.
in the device for elevating a rigid hose-pipe,
said device consisting of a Worm and gear; second, in the combination 0f an air-chamber at the point of junction between the rigid and l flexible hose.
Figure l is an elevation, showing that part of my device to Which the invention relates. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section of the same.
LetA represent the body of the carriage, to which, at some convenient point, I attach a firm bed-piece, B. In this bed-piece I construct a swi\-Yelhousing, O, Figs. 2 and 3. Said housing is free to revolve in all directions. In this housing O I mount a barrel or drum, D, into which I fasten the rigid hose-pipe E in such amannerthat it has an open communication, through the drum D, with the air-chamber H and connection-nipple F. The drum D has a shaft, K, extending, as shown in Fig. 2, to
the-end of which I attach the Worm-gear L. Mis a Worm, which operates in conjunction with the gear L. I is a crank for working the Worm and gear.
In use, I attach the ilexible hose-pipe to the connection-nipple F, and extend, by unionjoints or otherwise, the pipe E to any desired height. The pipe E may also be stayed by suitable guy-ropes or Wires.
The object of placing the airehamber H at the junction of the flexible with the rigid pipe is to relieve the flexible pipe from4 the great strain and shock attending the sudden ejection of Water from it to the rigid pipe, and thereby prevent vibration in the rigid pipe E.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the pipe E, barrel D, and swivel-housing O with the Worm-gear L M, operating substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The arrangement of the air-chamber H with the rigid pipe E and the exible-pipe nipple F, operating substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE WV. VENNER.
