useful Improvements in Toothbrushes,- of.
which the following is a specification. V
f The object of this invention isv to provide impfiovelnents in brushes forcleansing the test i Another object is to provide a brush which is adapted to cleanse both the outside and inner side of a row of teeth simultaneously, that is, with the same manual effort and motion of the hand, instead of first brushin the outer and then the inner su-r- I faces'ol the teeth A further object is to provide such an articl'e, comprising a brush member pivotally mounted upon the end portion of a handle, whereby the angle formed by the bristles of e the brush with the handle is altered at will,
orautomatically, asthe handle when held is substantially one position is oscillated about the curvatureof a set of teeth..'
Still another. object is to provide" in such an article? a second brush member ivotally mounted both with respect to the said handle and the first brush member, so that upon oscillating the handlein the usual manner the shape of the space between the bristles of the brushes changes, as the relation of the com-. bined brushes to the handle changes.
And a stillfurther object is to provide in such an article a pair of o posltely positioned. brushes, the brushacks, or the planes ,of the respective bristle tips of the two brushes, converging in one direction to conform substantially with the tapering character of the test while the pivotal relation of one brush with respect to the other changes so that at one end the opposed bristles-are in proximit for uniform contact with the frontal teet and .at the other end the opposed bristles .arewidely f aced apart-5 to admit therebetwe'en the thicker teeth in the sides of the java With theeeiand other objects in view, the resent invention comprises further novel details of construction and operation hereinafter fully brought outin the following dwcription, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1
1923. Serial no. 687,440.
' is a top plan view of one embodiment of theinvention, showin the brushes in a central position; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinalsection of the brush as|shown in Fig, 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improved article, with the brushes oscillated in one direction with respect to the handle, and one. of the brushes oscillated with respect to the other; and Fig. 4 is abottom plan view of the llrrush' or article in the position shown in Referring to the drawings, any suitably shaped'handle 1 is provided, the same be-' ing bert and providedat one end 2 with a flattened head 3, having a centrally transversely extending, bore 4, receiving one end of a rivet 5 or. other means for pivotally mounting upon said-head a suitably shaped base member 6. Said base member is angularly' directed at one end portion and transversely extended in opposite directions in such manner as to form a curved brushback 7, provided with the usual type of bristles 8, which, if preferred, may have theirend portions 9 tapered for entering the interstices between the teeth of the user in the most efiicient manner.
The opposite end portion of the said base member 1s extended oppositely to form a bearing gortion 10, having an outwardly positione face 11, and provided with a transversely ositioned aperture 12, through which exten s arivet or other pivotal member 13. I
Sup orted' upon-the bearin portion 10 is a the b0 y portion 14,- provide with a transversely positioned aperture 15, throu h which extends the pivot member 13, said body portion extending angularly outwardly, and preferably at substantially right angles to the bearing portion 10 to provide a brush-back'16,comprising oppositely extending portions suitably curved and provided with bristles 17, which, if desired, maybe cut at the free ends 18 as are the bristles8 at theirend portions 9.
In this construction, it will be noted that the base rtion 6 is mounted to rotatefor at least oscillate about the rivet 5, which ex tends through an aperture 19 in said base portion. Thus, when the brush-7 is in the position shown in Fig. 3, the position of the curved plane of the free. end portions of the bristles is such as to corres and with the curvature ofthe teeth of the r1 ht lower jaw, or the upper left jaw, wheat handle rec 1 is held substantially directly infront of front teeth of either the upper or lower aw,-
are thinner or of less transverse extent from inside to outside than are the'- teeth of the side and reaf portions of the jaws.
Obviously then, as the brush-handle is moved outwardly and. thence laterally, so
that the pivot 5 moves in an arc conformmg with that of ones jaw, the bristles of the brush7 will follow the outer surface of the teeth, while the bristles of the brush 16 follow the inner surfaces of the teeth until the base member 6 has moved angularly into a similar position upon the opposite side of,
' and in angular relation with, the handle,
and the brush 16 has oscillated upon said base member with respect to the brush 7, so that the brush ends, more distinctively separated in Fig 3, have approached each other into close relationship, while the brush ends adjacent to each other in said Fig. 3
have become separated for the purpose of permitting the entrance of the teeth of gradually changing thickness upon the oposite sides of the jaw, that is, upon the eft side of the lower jaw, or the right side of the upper jaw.
It will at once he observed that this inven tion is not limited to the exact angular relationship shown as existing between the brushes as illustrated, nor the proportionate distance separating the brushes of a given article, for the reason that the thickness of teeth of minors is much less than of the teeth of adults, while it is also true that the thickness of teeth and the radii of the arcs of the teeth in adults differ materially.
While a single embodiment of the invention has been described in detail, it is to be understood that the scope of the in.- vention, broadly speaking, is to be determined solely by the scope of the claims hereto appended.
Having thus described my invention, what ll claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. {an article, comprising a member adapted to be used as a handle, a base member pivotally carried by said first member, a brush fixedly mounted upon and operative to move with said second member in respect to said first member, and a second brush pivotally carried by said second member and movable both with respect to said first and eecondrnenibers.
neeaeeo 2." in article, comprising a handle, a base member pivotally carried by one end portion of said handle and having a laterally disposed integral extension, a brush integrally secured to said extension, said base member also having an integral angularly disposed extension, and a'second brush pivotally carried by said angularly disposed extension and adapted to oscillate both with respect to said handle and with said first brush, the ends of the bristles of the respective brushes lying in substantially concentrically vcurved planes angularly disposed with respect to each other to provide a tapering space between them to accommodate teeth of the average shape.
3. An article, comprismg a handle, a base member pivotally carried by one end portion of said handleand having an extension, a brush integrally secured to said extension and adapted to oscillate with respect to said handle, and a second brush pivotally carried by said base member and angularly disposed with respect to said first brush, said second brush being adapted to oscillate both with respect to. said handle and said first brush. a
4. A11 article, comprising a handle, a base member pivotally carried by one end portion ofsaid handle and having an extension,
a brush integrally secured to said extension and adapted to oscillate with respect to said handle, said base member having a portion angularly disposed with respect to said brush, and a second brush pivotally carried by said angularly disposed portion so that the axes of oscillation of said base member and the second brush are angularly related, said second brush being adapted to oscillate both with res ect to said handle and said first brush, an in a moving plane angularly disposed with respect to the fixed plane of movement of said first brush.
5. An article, comprising a handle, a base member pivotally carried by one end portion of said handle and having a laterally disposed inte ral extension, a brush integrally secure to said extension, said base member also having an integral angularly dis osed extension, and a second brush piv ota y carried by said angularly disposed extension and adapted to oscillate both with respect to said handle and with said first brush, the ends of the bristles oi the respective brushes lying in substantially similarly curved planes, and by virtue of the angular relationship of the said extensions said planes being angularly disposed with respect to each other to provide a tapering space between thebristles to accommodate the average shaped teeth. 7
In testimonywhereoi ll have afixd my signature. 7
