To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY Pn'roro, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches. "M v The primary object of this invention is the provision of a durable and accurate wrench embodying quick adjusting means which will not interfere with the efficiency of the wrench in effecting slight adjustments.
A further object of this invention is the rovisionof a uick adjusting 4wrench emodying a practical and durable association of parts which may be economically manufactured.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown but the preferred' embodiment `of this invention, the letter A generally designates the improved wrench, which may include an elongated shank 10, preferably olygonal in cross section and aving the aterally extended rigid or fixed ottoniy edge 12 of the shank 10, from which the rigid 'jaw 11 is offset is preferably provided with threads 13 inclined slightly with res ect to the run of the shank 10.

snugly and slidably receiving the wrench shank therein, whereby the jaw element 16 when mounted upon the shank 10 for sliding longitudinally thereof will be"-. prevented from lateral shift or rocking upon said shank. A reduced article engaging portion 23 extends laterally from the threaded edge 12 of the shank 10, as a part of the jaw element 16, in facing relation toward the fixed jaw 11 substantially as is illustrated in Figure 1 ofthe drawing. On the portion of the jaw element 16 which extends laterally outwardly from the shank opening 20 directly opposed recesses 25'are provided on opposite sides of the element 16 which open at the rear edge 26 of the jaw element 16. The portion 27 of the jaw' element 15, intermediate the opposed recesses 25 is preferably provided with a slot`29 which extends at right angles to the run of the shank receiving passageway 20.
Referring to thequick adjusting mea-ns 17, the same preferably7 includes abody or casing 30 provided with a polygonal shaped passageway 31 extending therethrough which snu-gly and slidably receives the thickness of the shank 10, but as the height of the passageway is greater than the width of the shank 10, the casing 13 may be moved transversely of the jaw shank 10, as is obvious from Figure 1 of the drawing. A s ring member 35, preferably of good grade c ook spring is preferably carried by the top wall 36.of the body 30, within the passageway 31;,said spring 3,5 being connected to said top wall 36 intermediate its ends, as by means lof a rivet or other securing element 38, so that the ends 39 of said spring, when the adjusting means 17 is disposed `upon the shank 10, will engagey the outer'edge 40 of the shank 10. A recess 45 is provided inthe housing or casing 30, .which intersects the passageway 31, and provides the outwardly'- -upon which an adjustingthumb nut 54 is rotatably mounted within the recess 45. It is preferred that the leg 46 be provided with a Ascrew ythreaded aperture 56 open to the recess 45 and in aligning relation with an opening 57 in the leg 47, so that the screw or pintle member 50 may be inserted through the opening 57 for screw threaded engage# meint at its inserting end the screw threaded bpeing 56.
From the above description of the adjusting means 17, it is apparent that the flat spring 35 normally urges the threads of the thumb nut 54 into engagement with the threads 13 of the wrench shank 10, so that upon rotation or oscillation of the thumb nut 54, the casing 30y may be fed longitudinally of the shank 10. The laterally extending leg 46 of the casing 30 is provided with the forwardly extending lugs or arms 60, provided w!ith aligning apertures 61 therein; said lugs 60- being provided for movable insertion in the opposed recesses of the movable jaw element 16. Within the recesses/25, the lugs 60 are not hampered as to movement. A in 62 is provided for connection/fof the a justing mechanism 17 to the movable jaw mechanism 16, as by insertion through the aligning apertures 61 of the casing 3() and the slot 29 of the movable jaw element 16. vWhen in this relation of assembled parts, the front face 70 of the casing engages the rear edge 26 of the movable jaw 16, while the spring also maintains the pivot pin 62 in its most upward position within the slot 29, proximate the screw threaded side 12 of the shank. 10, and substantially as is illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing'.l lVhen itis desired to quickly slide the movable jaw construction 15 for a considerable distance along the wrench shank 10, the operator needs merely to apply pressure upon the casing 30 in proximity to the rivet 38 thereof, which will depress the spring 35 and remove the threads of-the thumb screw 54 from engagement with the threads of the wrench shank 10; this operation being permitted by the slidable pivot connection of the adjusting mechanism 17 with the jaw element 16 as hereinbefore described.
From the foregoing description of this invention, it is obvious that a practical type of quick adjusting wrench has been provided, which includes a mechanism attached to a movable jaw element so as not to weaken the jaw element in the slightest and cooperating therewith so that the same may be released to permit relatively long movements of the jaw upon the wrench shank, and yet being susceptible of engagement v with the wrench shank, as to permit accurate and slight adjustments of the movable jaw element with relation to the fixed jaw element of the wrench.
Various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be made to the Maasai Vfrmrof invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of,the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1.- A wrench comprising a threaded shank having a fixed jaw thereon, a movable jaw slidable longitudinally of said shank, a casing having forwardly extending lugs, means connecting said lugs to said movable jaw to permit relative movement of the movable jaw and easing transversely` of the ing a passageway for slidably receiving a" shank therethrough whereby the jaw may be moved longitudinally but not laterally with respect to said shank, said movable jaw providing opposed recesses on opposite sides thereof with .a slot extending through the portion of said movable jaw between said recesses, said slot extending transversely of the shank run, a casing including a passageway for slidably receiving the shank therethrough, said passageway being of such dimension as to permit movement of the casing transversely of the shank in the plane of the movable jaw, an adjusting screw rotatably carried by said casing adjacent the threads of said shank, spring means within the passageway of said casing normally engaging said shank to maintainthe adjusting nut in engagement with the threads of said shank, forwardly extending tingers carried by Said casing for movable disposition in the recesses at the opposite sides of said movable jaw, and a pin transversely carried by said forwardly extending lingers extending into the slot of said movable jaw, said casing when transversely moved on said shank against the action of said spring thereon adapted for slidable pivotal movement of the pin in the slot of said movable jaw, whereby the adjustin nut of said casing mayv be laterally move( out of threaded engagement with said shank to permit quick adjusting of the movable jaw on the wrench shank.
