UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIus E. ULRER, oF roRT HURoN, MICHIGAN, AssICNoR To IIIMsELF Ann FREDERICK I. MERRYMAM oF sAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK AND MUSIC STANDS. I
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,170, dated March 31, 1874; application filed January 17, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, JULIUs E. ULBER, of Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Book-Holder and Music-Stand, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a front elevation, of my improved booleholder and musicstand.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish a convenient book -holder and music stand for the use of musicians, artists, and the public in general, by which the book, music, or painting may be placed in any desired position required. for readily reading or exhibiting the same.
The invention will rst be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents the upright standard, resting on a suitable base part, a. B is the fan or sector shaped plate or support, which is hinged or pivoted by its back strip b to the broader top end of standard A. A segmental metallic guide-band, d, is socketed into the back strip b, passes through a slot, e, ot top part of standard A, and is clamped there by a set-screw, e', so that plate B may be arranged under any suitable angle to standard A. The slatted slide-piece Gis applied to the upper part of plate B by thumbscrew f, and moved up or down, as required. The music or book rest I) is pivoted by ascreW-bolt and nut, g, to the lower end of slide C, and may be turned again under any angle to the slide.
Elastic bands h serve to retain the book there. on for reading in bed or in an inclined posi. tion, having the book arranged above or sidewise. Narrower bands h retain the leaves, the broader bands IL the body of the book.
The music, book, or other article which is intended to be used `or exhibited on the stand, is placed on the rest, and the same then ad justed in the exact position desired, which is easily accomplished by means ofthe set-screws.
The sector-plate B is, furthermore, arranged with a series of small perforations, t', along the lower extremity, in which a key or pin is placed when thc slide C is carried too far side- Wise, so that an additional support for steadying the same is obtained, and the strain on the thumbscrewf lessened thereby.
A portfolio, E, may be hung by a hook to staples ofthe standard, for storing away sheets of music, pictures, or other articles.
The advantage which arises from the adjustability of the stand in every direction and position is obvious, and makes it, therefore, very useful for a variety of family and business applications.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with standard A, pivoted blade B b, having arc-guide d, and slotted support C, of the rest D, pivoted as and for the purpose specified.
