Description

April 22 1924.
D. M. GAULD ET AL SCREW COUPLING BUCKLE FOR RAILWAY CAR COUPLINGS Filed Nov. 23, 1920 s "re isten DAVID MASON GAULD AND GEORGE W'ILSON, OF GL'ASGOVT, SCOTLAND, ASSIGNORS TO P. & W. MACLELLAN LIMITED, OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
SCREW-COUPLING BUCKLE FOB RAILWAY-CAR COUPLINGS.
Application filed November 23, 1920.
1 0 all whom it may, concern .Be it known that we, DAVID Mason GAULD and Gnonen imon, residents of Glasgow, Scotland, and subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented a certain new and useful Screw-Coupling Buckle for Railway-Car Couplings (for which we filed an application in Great Britain January 29, 1919, Serial No. 2161, Patent No. mater of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a screw coupling buckle of the type used in railway car couplings and which can either be manufactured from a rolled section, or be hydraulically pressed, drop-stamped, forged, smithed, or made of cast steel. It consists of a gland with a split tongue at one side and a diaphragm with a key formed in the same fitting into a keyway in coupling screw and a rivet or a bolt with a lock-nut or washer which passes through the diaphragm and tongue. The other end of the buckle has a tongue whereby the standard type of hand or weighted lever can be readily attached without any alteration.
In order that our invention may be properly understood and readily carried into effect, we have hereunto appended one sheet of drawings, of which- Figure l is a side elevation illustrating our invention.
Figure 2 is an end View of the same.
The buckle A is in the form of a gland with a split tongue at one side into which a diaphragm B with a key formed in the same is inserted, and fits into a keyway cut in the blank or unscrewed portion at the centre of the coupling screw. A rivet C of suitable diameter is provided and passes through the split tongue, and the key, thus making a most eficient friction grip. By this means the key of the diaphragm is accurately engaged in the keyway.
Serial No. 426,045.
The device, due to its accurate bearing surfaces, and perfectly rigid lock, eliminates all possibility of lateral shake, or looseness, or movement in the direction of the force applied.
The other end of the buckle has a tongue D similar to the ordinary screw coupling arrangement, so that the standard type of hand weight lever E can be readily attached without any alteration.
The device can also be applied in the form of a split gland, the two halves being riveted together with countersunk rivets at the hand. lever side, thus permitting easy replacement.
The buckle, in addition to the means of fastening already described can be further, or alternatively, secured by a small rivet passing through the buckle and the blank portion of the screw.
The invention also permits the screw to be manufactured without forging or heat treatment of any kind, and entirely avoids the liability to defects, due to faulty smithing.
Claim:
A screw coupling buckle for railway car couplings consisting of a gland having a split tongue at one side, a diaphragm having akey formed into same fitting into a keyway in the coupling screw, and a securing device passing through the diaphragm and tongue, all substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore described.
In witness whereof we affix our signatures.
DAVID MASON GAULD. GEORGE WILSON.
