The primary object of the present invention, therefore, is tov provide attachments for reamers that will'maintain the reamers in the desired position of alignment throughout the reaming operation; and the attachments are designed more particularly for reamers usedy in reaming out aligned holes'or bearings. j l
In various mechanical constructions it is desired to provide spaced journal boxes or bearings that are aligned, and are reamed accurately to size throughout the bearing seats. The construction of the reamer attachments may be varied in accordance with the different types of reamersiwith which it is to be used, and also to meet the different conditions under which it maybe used, and it may be desirable under some. conditions to provide the reamer with means at its forward end to guide the same in its re'aming operation, 'while under other conditions it may be desirable to guide the reamer from l f fa position' to the rear of its cutting sur- The above and other features of the face. Accor-din ly, in Fig. 7 the reamer is shown as guide into the hole to be reamed from a position in front of the cutting portion of the reamer, while in Fig. 8 the reamer is shown as entering one hole while it is guided from a second hole to the rear of the cutting portion of the reamer.
One of the uses for -which the present invention is well adapted is in connection with the piston of an internal comics l bustion engine 4to Aream out the bushings in which the'wristpin 'for the crank shaft is journaled.` In Fig. 7 a well known type- V1li '.Viding an vexpansible sleeve 21 within the left hand bushing 2O of Fig. 7 which acts throughfthe extension 22 to guide lthe reamer. This construction maintains the reamer in the desired position of alignment as it enters the right hand bush20, and as a result the bushing is reamed to a uniform diameter throughout its length.
In the embodiment illustrated the extension 22 has a sleeve portion 23 internally 25 threaded as at 24 and a reduced portion forming a pin 25. The construction is such that when the extension is to be applied to the type'of reamer shown in Fig. 1, the nut 15 may be removed and the extension B0 22 screwed on the threaded portion 12 in place of the nut. The expansible sleeve 21 may be variously constructed and may be made a part of the extension 22 or separate therefrom. ,In the present instance the sleeve 21 comprises an elongated collar 26 having an internal bore 27 to slidably receivc the reduced portion or pin 25 of the extension, and at one end of the collar is formed the tapered shoulder 28 while a nut 29 is threaded upon the other end of. the collar and has a similar tapered shoulder 30. A split cylinder 3l is mounted upon the collar 26 with its ends engaging the tapered shoulders 28, 30, and the cyllnder is expanded by tightening up the nut 29. The outer surface of the nut 29 is preferably knurled,as is also the opposite end of the .-collar 26.
The expansion sleeve 21v may be readily expanded to fit snugly within one ofthe bushings 20, where it-will serve to guide the.
reamer as it enters the other bushing, and the expansible sleeve may be ypushed forward by the reamer as it travels through the bushing in the reamingl operation.
When the aligned bushings are relatively close to eac-h other as in Fig. 7, it is unnecessary to provide a guiding bushing at the rear of the cutting portion of the 00 reamer, as the reamer will enter one bushing ybefore it clears the other, but if the bushings or holes to be reamed are spaced apart a distance greater than the length of the cutive ting face of the reamer, as is the case in Fig. 8, a rear expansible sleeve 32 is preferably provided. Theexpansible sleeve 32'may be constructed similar to the cxpansible'sleeve 21, except that the collar 33 is preferably internally threaded as at 34 to be screwed on the threader portion .13 of the reamer.. An expansible reamer and guides for guiding the reamer in reaming aligned holes, comprising in comb-ination, a reamer body threaded at its ends to receive blade holding means, reamer blades mounted up- .the reamer body for adjustment longitudinally lof said body, a collar having threaded engagement with one threaded end of the reamer body and adapted to secure one end of the reamer blades in place, an expansible sleeve mounted on said collar, an extension having threaded engagement with the other threaded end of the body and adapted to secure the other end of the reamer bladesin place, and an expansion sleeve fitted upon said extension. n

comprising in combination, a reamer body threaded at its ends to receive blade holding means,` reamer blades mounted upon lthe reamer body for adjustment longitudinally of said body and the blades and body having cooperating inclined surfaces for expanding the blades as they are forced iusA longitudinallyl of the body, a collar having threaded engagement with the rear threaded end of the reamer body and adapted to 'secure the rear ends of the reamer blades in place, an expansible sleeve upon said collar, an extensionv at the for- Ward end of the reamer body, andan expansion sleeve fitted upon said extension.
