Description

R. B. COOPER.
WITNESSES W PM ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RIASON B. COOPER, OF MONTIOELLO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRI NTING-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,102, dated March 31, 1874; application filed December 1, 1873. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RIASON B. COOPER, of Monticello, in the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Printing-Press, of which the following is a specification:
.The invention will first be fully described, and then, pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved printing-press, and Fig. 2 is a top view.
A and B represent the toggle-jointed arms, one of which is pivoted to the stationary typebed A, and the other is mounted on a support,
0, which is movable in slots or ways K in the frame toward and from the stationary pivot of the first, and springs L are attached to draw it up toward said stationary pivot. This movable support is connected, by rods E, with arms H, which carry the platen I, and the arms A B are connected at their joint M, by the yoke N and connecting-rod F, with the foot-treadle for forcing the platen up to the typebed by pressing the foot-treadle-down, which slides the support 0 away from the bed, and, at the same time, brings down the joint M, so that g the powerful act-ion of the arms A B comes in to use when the platen comes to the bed. The platen is jointed to the arms H a little above its longitudinal axis, so as to accommodate itself to the plane of the bed, and below the pivot the arms are provided with adjustingscrews J to hold it in the required relation to the type-bed. By connecting the togglejointed arms to the platen-arms by the movable sup port- O greater movement is obtained with arms of a given length than a connection with the joint M would give;
Having thus described my invention,Icla-im as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with type-bed A and platen I, the former rigidly attached to the frame and the latter connected therewith by pivoted arms H H, of the toggle-arms A B, the former pivoted to bed A and the latter movable in slot K, provided with spring L and connected with platen by the rods E E, as and for the purpose specified.
