To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. HART, citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in RivetingMachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in riveting machines and the object of my invention is to provide a riveting machine of a simple and cheap construction that may be operated withcomparatively little power to clench the ends of rivets of the form com monlyused in riveting plates, beams and the like.
My invention consists in the novel con struction, adaptation and combination of parts as will be more clearly hereinafter described and claimed.
T accomplish this object by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a riveting machine constructed in accordance with my invention as it may appear when in an operative position M Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in front elevation illustrating the devices for supporting the riveting machine;
Fig.3 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in cross-section and partly in elevation of a detail of my invention; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in cross-section and partly in elevation of another detail of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, throughout which like numerals indicate like parts, the numeral 5 designates a riveting tool which is shaped like a bolt except that it is provided on its forward end with an enlarged section 6 that is recessed as at 7 for the purpose of forming a head on a rivet.
The tool 5 is slidably disposed within suitably alined holes in two upright frame pieces 10 and 11 that are rigidly connected with each other by an integral base portion 12.
The frame piece 10 is of relatively short length but the frame piece 11 is substantially longer in length and is provided on the top end with a widened portion 13 that is bent downwardly to form a hook it that is adapted to hook over and slide upon a sup- P rt or track m mber 15 that y be Specification of Letters Patent.

The. widened portion 13 of the frame piece 11 is provided at both ends with spring pressed pawls 20 and 21 that normally engage withthe teeth of integrally formed ratchets 22 and 23 respectively on the track member 15 and prevent endwise movement of the frame portion 13 onthe track member. When it is desired to shift the riveting machine sidewise on the track member 15 the pawls may be lifted out of engagement with the ratchets 22 and 23.
The riveting tool 5 is provided near the front end with a fixed. collar 24cfand has a helical compression spring 25 provided thereon, one end of the spring 25 hearing against the frame member 10 and the other end of the spring 25 bearing against the collar 24 so that when the tool is moved to the right as seen in Fig. 1 the spring 25 will be compressed and when the tool is released the force of the spring against the collar 24 will move the tool in the opposite direc tion and cause it to strike a blow.
The riveting tool 5 is provided with a conically shaped head 26, the inner side of which forms a shoulder 27 with which a plunger 29 in theend of a lever arm 28 may engage to move the riveting tool 5 from the position shown in full lines to the position shown by broken lines in Fig. 1, and thereby compress the spring 25.
The plunger is movable lengthwise within a recess in the end of the lever arm 28 and is yieldingly urged outwardly by a spring 30. The outward movement ofthe plunger 29 is limited by a pin 31 that extends crosswise of the plunger and is movable within slots 32 in the lever arm 28.
The lever arm 28 is fulcrumed on a pivot pin 33 in a bracket 34: that is fixedly secured to the lower portion 12 of the frame.
In operation of my riveting machine the track member 15 is secured to one of the plates that are being riveted, at the desired elevation, so that the riveting tool is supported opposite the rivet that is to be riveted. The operator then grasps the lower end of the lever arm and moves it back and forth from the position shown in full lines to the position shown in broken lines to reciprocate the riveting tool and cause it to strike and cleneh the rivet.
When the lever arm is in the position shown by full lines in Fig. 1 the plunger 29 will be engaged behind the head 26 SO that when the lever arm ismoved into-the position shown by broken lines the riveting tool 5 will be moved to the right into the position shown by broken lines and will then be released and .permittedto strike the rivet.
As the lever arm is moved back from the broken line to the full line position the inclined front side 35 of. the plunger 29. will engage with the head'26 and be crowded downwardly thereby. against the pressure, of the spring 30 until it passes the edge of the head 26and snaps upwardly into the position shown. by full lines in Fig. l.
Inpractice it may be found desirable to provide suitable mechanism whereby the lever arm 28 may be operated by turning a crank orbythe use offoot power but since this forms no part of my invention it is not herein shown.
It'is obvious that changes in the form of construction of'the various parts of myinventi'on mybe resorted to within the scope of the following claims.
1. A riveting. machine of the class -de scribed, comprising two upright frame members that are rigidly connected in spaced apart relation by an integral base portion and are provided with alined perforations, one of said upright frame members being of greater length than the other and having a hook provided. on the .top end thereof, a riveting tool slidably mounted Withinv the perforations in said frame mem bers'and having .a recessin one end thereof that is adapted for clenching rivets,a spring connected 'With said rivet tool and said frame members and adapted to urge said riveting tool in one direction, a lever arm pivotally mounted on said frame and a spring actuated plunger in the end of said lever arm for engaging said riveting tool whereby said riveting tool may be withdrawiragainst the pressure of said spring and then released.
2. A riveting machine of the class described, comprising two upright frame members that are Secured together in spaced apart relation by an integral base portion and are provided with alined v perforations, of a riveting tool reeip rocable withinsaid perforations, a collar on said riveting tool between, said upright members, a helical compression spring on said riveting tool and interposed between saidcollar and one-of said upright members, a head on said riveting toolsaid head having an abrupt shoulder on its inner side, an operating lever pivotally mounted on a fixed bracketon the base portion-of said frame said operating lever having a tubular bore in. the upper end thereof, a plunger 'slidable within said bore and provided with'an inclined outer end, a spring to urge said plungeroutwardly, means for limitingthe outward movementof'said plunger, a track member for said riveting machine, ahook on the upper endof oneof'said frame members and adapted to hook over said track and ratchet means for fastening said hook to said track,
