To all whom t may consom.'
Be it @own that ll, MORRIS H. HAR'rznLL,
a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and, county of Philadelphia, State .s of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Folding `Umbrella, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a folding umbrella or parasol and it consists of novel io joints for the folding sections of the ribs of the umbrella, and the attachments of the resilient means which retain the sections in normal condition.
'llhe invention is satisfactorily illustrated ia in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are so within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figures l and 2 represent side elevations at a right angle to each other of portions of the sections of a rib, and the joint of said sections embodying my invention.
Figure 3 represents a side elevation of said sections and appurtenances in folded condition of said sections and also a side elevation of adjacent portions of the umbrella. v
Figure d represents a perspective view of the members of the joint, shown detached from each other.
Figure 5 represents a longitudinal section of a portion on line l5--5 Figure l.
Figure 6 represents a perspective view of a modication of one of the joint members.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings.
l and 2 represent sections of an umbrella rib. To the adjoining ends of said sections are secured the sleeves 3 and 4 respectively on each of which are the pairs of ears 5. rlhe ears of the opposite sleeves are pivotally conle nected by the pin 6, thus forming the joint of the sections l and 2, admitting of said sections being folded for the purpose of a folding umbrella, and then admitting said sections to be unfolded forming continuiso ties of each other producing a single rib as in an ordinary umbrella, when the umbrella may be opened and closed as usual. In order to retain the sections unfolded in their continuities l employ coil springs 7 which ce entend respectively along the sections, their outer ends being connected with the clips 8 which are fitted on the sections and clamped iirinly thereto. rlfhe inner ends of said springs are attached freely with the plate or piece 9 of metal or other suitable material, in openings l0 therein which plate is `iitted within the opposite ears v5 and provided with the elongated slot 1l through which passes the shank of the pinl 6, the latter thus connecting the plate with the ears 5, the springs being attached to said plate as above stated.
lt will be seen that inthe folding and unfolding of the sections of the ribs, the plate 9 is under the pressure of the springs 7, said pressure being exerted on the sections of the ribs as to hold them in distended or continuity-positions, the ears 5 moving freely on said plate and vice versa, thus guiding the ears in their motions, while also providing simple means for connecting the ears and strengthening the joint of the sections preventing twisting or torsion of the sections on each other at said joint.
ln Figure 6 the plate is provided with the circular opening l2 to receive the pin 6, but the elongated slot 11 in the other figures is preferred as it imparts to the plate greater freedom of motion in the folding of the sections of the rib.
Attention is directed to the fact that the sections of the rib are not pierced and thereby weakened for the reception of the pivot pin 6, and that the plate 9 forms the bearf ings of said pin and the means for the attachment of the springs 3 to the sections of the ribs at their ends adjacent to the axial joint of said sections.
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2. lln a folding umbrella, a rib formed of of foldable sections with their adjacent ends overlapped, a single axial pin for connecting the latter, resilient means for holding said sections in normal condition, and a joint piece for said sections adapted to receive said pin for connecting said piece with the rib and to provide means for attachment of said resilient members.
2. In a folding umbrella, a rib formed of foldable sections with their adjacent ends overlapped, a joint for said sections, a single axial pin for connecting the latter, and resilient members for holding said sections in unfolded condition, said joint including a a transverse elongated slot, and a single pin piece adapted to receive said pin and propassed loosely through said slot and en- 10 vide means for the attachment of said memgaged in the overlapped ears of the sections. bers adjacent to said joint.
3. In a folding umbrella, a rib composed MORRIS H. HARTZELL. of sections having adjacent ends formed Witnesses: with overlapping ears, and a member having IBAIAH W. GROSS,
openings for the attachment of springs and CHAs. E. MILLER.
