' SOCKET WRENCH.
Application filed Itarch 29, 1923.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that L WALLACE W. Hnwirr, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of akland, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented new and useful' lm rovenients in Socket Wrenches, of which t e following is a speci- 'fication My invention is particularly adapted to socket wrenches whereby a nut which has been removed in the wrench socket may be readily ejected therefrom.
Other objects will appear from. study of the drawings and specifications which follow.
These objects I accomplish by forming the, Socke-t Wrench preferably with a rigid Shank,
whereby it may be rotated in any conventional way and Iwithin the Socket I preferably mount a plate or diaphragm operable axially therethrough by suitable connections extending through the body of the socket and in a convenient position for operation by the hand of the operator.
By referring to the accompanying drawing my invention will be made clear.
. Referring to the drawing:
Fig.4 l shows my invention in'its simplest form, partially in cross section.
4Fig 2 shows apreferred form partly in cross section.
Fig. 3 shows an alternate form of the invention partly in cross section.
Throughout the figures similar numerals 35 refer to identical parts.
At 1 is shownA a socket of any conventional type as for operating hexagon nuts or cap.
screws. This 1s mounted rigidly upon shank '2l or may be solid therewith. At 3 is a n da. hr or Hat plate ada ted yto press against any nut contained wit in the socket upon depressing-the finger members 4, 14, or 24; t e finger members being connected in Figs. 1 an 1.3 by the rods 5 and 15, re-
Serial No. 628,446.
spectively, to the plate 3 and in Fig. 2 by the rods 6 and 7. At 8 is a spring retaining the plate 3 in its retracted full line position, 4and which is compressed by depressing the linger member when the said plate is forced into the dotted position 9. Similar springs at l0 and .11 perform a like function for the constructions shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
ln the construction shown in Fig. 3 the rod 15 and yspring 11 are mounted withinv the body of the shank 2 and are retained in dotted position 9 ejecting any hexagon shape that may have been retained in the socket.
While I have shown and described my wrench as applying particularly to hexagon nuts, it of course will be understood it may be applied to any other form of nut and the invention may be embodied in other constructions and I .desire to be understood as claiming all such.
I claim:
A wrench comprising a socket and an operating stem integral therefor, in combination with a plate within the socket said plate movable axially through said socket, a rigid hand operable member fixed to said plate extending through the rear of the socket external to the stem and parallel therewith and spring means normally holding the plate in retracted position.
