UNITED sures 1,490,705 PATENT OFFICE,
FRANK X. LUTEBBUR, OF SIDNEY, 0H10.
DETACHBLE BEA1ER CONNECTION FOR. MIXING MACHINES.
Original application fl1ed Iune 4, 1921, Serial No. 475,137. Divided and this application filed July 5, 1921. Seri al No. 482,435.
To aZl whom zt may concem:
Be it known that I, FRANK X. LAUIER- BUR, a citizen of the United States, residin at Sidney, in the county of Shelbyan State of Ohio, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Detachable Beater Connections for Mixing Machines, of which the followifig is a specification.
The invention relates to a detachable beater connection for mixing machines and is a division of an application for patent filed by me J une 4,1921, Serial No. 475,137, for a mixing machine.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of detachable connections for beaters, whips and similar agitating or mixin machines or the like and to provide a simp e, practical, efficient device of strong and durable construction adapted to enable a beater or the like to be readily connected to a shaft or spindle of a mixing machine and 'to be readily removed therefrom without changing the position of the ball or the shaft.
A further object of the invention is'to provide a detachable connection of this character which when the beater, Whi or the like is released and free to be with rawn from the shaft or spindle Will be supported in operative position until removed by the 0 crator thereby facilitating the placing c the beaters, whips and the like in position and also the removal therefrom. 3
With these and other Objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combinatiOn and arrahgementofparts hereinafter fully described, illustrat in the acc0mpanying drawings and pointdout in the claims hereto appended, it .being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction,
' within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without de artin or sacrificing any o thea invention.
Inthe drawings in which like ch aracters of reference desrgnate corresponding parts in the several fi ures:
Figure1 is a side elevation of a portion of a mixing machine provided With a detach vantges 0 the able beater corinection constructedin ac cordanoe with thisinvention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail vie;w partly' in-section' illustratiug the construction of the detachable connection.
from the s irit creases in diameter upwardly to the cylindrical portion of the shaft or spindle 1, and the latter is provided at a point above and spaced from the lower tapered portion with an annular groove 4 adapted to be engaged by a spring pressed hall 5 for maintairiing a vertically slidable sleeve 6 in an elevated positi'on out of engagement with the shank 7 of the beater 2. The sleeve 6 which may be constructed of any suitable material, is interiorly tapered from the bottom to the up- -per portion as clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings and is circular in crosssection as shown in Figure 3.
The hall 5 is arranged in a bore 8 and a spring 9 is retained in position by a screw 10. The beater may be of any of the various forms of beater, whips or agitators employed' in machines of this or similar types an the said shank 7 which extends upwardly from the beater 2 is tapered crosssectionally as showr1in Figure 3 and fits in a taperinp recess 11 in the lower tapered portion 0 the shaft or spindle 1.
Therecess 11 is extended laterally at the bottom at 12 to. receive the lower end. of the shank 7, and the said shank 7 is provided at the upper end With an extension or lug 13 which fits in a corresponding extension 1401 the upper end of the recess. 'Wheh theSleeve is in an elevated position clear of the recess of the tapered portion of the shaft or spindle, the beater may be removed by a lateral movement of the shank and it may bereadilg placed in the recess of the shaft or s 1ndle y aSimilar movement and when t e sleeve is moved downwardly into engagement with the shank and the tapered portion of the spindle or shaft,. the beater will be firml}v and rigidly clamped in enagement Wit the saidshaft orspindle. The orm of the shank may be varied and a relatively wide shank 15 having a curved inner face 16 may be employed as illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings, and as shown in Figure 6, the shank 17 and the recess 18 may be sector shaped. These and various other forms wiH enable the beater to be readily placed in and remo ved from the recess of'the shaft or spindle.
The 111g 13 which projects laterally from the upper end of the shank 7 and which engages the upper extension.l4 of the recess in the shaft or spindle is ada ted to support the beacer in position whi e the sleeve is being adjusted vertically on the shaft-or spindle into or out of engagement with the tapered portion of the shaft or spindle and the shank of the beaten What is claimed is:
1. A coupIing for a mixing machine provided with a shaft or spindle having a tapered lower portion provided with a recess tapered transversely and extended inwardly at its ,upper end, a shank transversely taperd to fit the r'eoess and. provided with a 111g arranged in the extension of the said recess, and a sleeve slidable on the shaft or spindle and interiorly tapered to fit the same for securing the shaftn said recess.
2. A coupling for a mixing machine inoluding a shaft or spindle having a tapered portion dprovided With a ion itudinairacess extende transversey at t e upper and lower ends, a shank fitting the recess and luding a Shat or spindle having a tapered portion provided with a longitudinai recess tapered transversey provided at the .upper and IOWer ends With inwardly extending portions, a transveroly tapered shankfitting in therecess and having upper and lower inwardly xtending -transversely tapered portions fitting the extensions of the said recess and a slidable sleeve mounted on the shaft or spindle and tapered interiorly to fit the lower portions of the same for soeuring the shank in the recess.
4. A coupiing for a mixing machine including a shaft or spindle having a tapered portion and provided with an annular groove spaoed from the tapered portion, a shank adapted to fit in the tapered portion of the siiaft or spindle, a slidable sleeve interiofly tap(red to fit the shaft or spindle and a yieldable device carried by the sleeve and adapted to engage the groove for holding the sleeve in an eevated position.
n testimony whereof, I have hereunto afiixed my signature;
RANK X. LAUIERBUR.
