J. D. MERRIFIELD PIPE VISE F'iled Sept. 16

PIIE VSE.
Application tiled September le. H322.
To a-ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. Mnnnrrrnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to facilitate the mounting of a pipe vise and also to provide it with pipe bending members. By this mounting the pipe vise may be readily secured to an anchored pipe and the bending members so secured with the pipe vise.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Fig. l shows a plan view of the pipe vise.
Fig. 2 a bottom view of the vise.
Fig. 3 a section on the line 33 in Fig. l.
l marks the base of the vise, and. 2 a movable jaw frame. The base has ears 3 over which extend the ears 4C on the frame, the two being locked together by pins 5. A latch 6 is pivotally secured to the frame and operates on a catch 8. A movable jaw 9 is mounted in the frame and actuated by a screw l0. Gripping dies l1 and l2 are secured to the jaw 9 and base l respectively in the usual manner. So far as described these parts are of ordinary construction.
A clamping plate 13 is secured to the side face of the base by means of clamping bolts 14. AA clamping jaw l5 is arranged. on the plate l13 and opposes the jaws 16, these being slightly staggered so as to more securely grip an anchored pipe 17. lt will be noted that the clamping plate is arranged on the face of the base and this brings the supporting or anchored pipe closer to the work and reduces the leverage on the anchored pipe and the clearance necessary for the vise.
A bending surface 19 is arranged on the plate 13 and occupies a position at the opposite side of the anchor pipe from the Iiaws of the vise. A hoolr 2O opening outwardly from the base is cast on the base and forms a companion bending member operating in conjunction with the bending surface 19. A pipe 21 is shown in dash lines between the bending members. The. base and clamping plate are provided with interlocking` surfaces so that the bolts 14C are reliieved from the bending strain on the clamp- Seral No. 588,587.
ing plate. As this stra-in is considerable this is important. This is accomplished in the present structure by forming a notch 22 in the base and extending a shoulder 23 into the notch.
lWhat I claim as new is l. In a pipe vise, the combination of a base; a fixed jaw on the base; a movable jaw; a frame carried by the base; means on the frame actuating the movable jaw; and a clamp on the side face of the base comprising a clamping member moving to clamping position in a direction at right angles to the direction of movement of the movable jaw.
2. ln a pipe vise, the combination of a base; a .fixed jaw on the base; a movable jaw; a frame carried by the base; means on the frame actuating the movable aw; a clamp on the side face of the base comprising a clamping member moving to clamping position in a direction at right angles to the direction of movement of the movable jaw; and clamping screws extending from the vclamp to the base.
3. In a pipe vise, the combination of a base; a fixed on the base; a movable jaw; a frame carried by the base; means on the frame actuating the movable jaw; a clamp on the-'side face oit the base comprising a clamping member moving to clamping position in a direction at right angles to the direction of movement of the movable javv; clamping screws extending from the clamp to the base; a bending member on the base: and a bending member on the clamp.
fi. In a pipe vise, the combination of a base; a fixed jaw on the base; a movable jaw; a frame carried by the base; means on the frame actuating the movable jaw; a clamp on the side face oit the base comprising a clamping member moving to clamping position in a direction at right angles to the ldirection of movement of the movable j aw;
clamping screws extending from the clamp to the base; a bending member. on the base; and a bending member on the clamp, said clamp and base having interlocking surfaces.
5. In a pipe vise, the combination oit a base; a fixed jaw on the base; a movable jaw; a frame carried by the base; means on the frame actuating the movable jaw; a clamp on the side tace of the base compris-S ing a clamping member moving to Clamping position in a direction at right angles to the direction of movement of the movable jaw; clamping screws extending from the clamp to the base; an open bending hook arranged on the base and extending in a direction away from the frame and positioned away from the edge adjacent to the jaw; and a bending member on the clamp eo-opeinting with the hook.
