Be it known that 1, JOHN H. BARR, citizen of the "United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of
which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to paper feeding mechanism .for typewriting ma chines and has for its chief object the provision of a new and improved paper bail which co-operates with the platen to give better control of the paper at all times and more especially when the bottom of the paper has passed out of the control of the pa or feeding rollers.

It is preferred to employ a paper deflector or apron although this is not illustrated.
My novel paper bail comprises a cross bar or rod 11, the ends of which receive hub portions 12'of the parallel side arms 13, cross pins 14; passing through the hubs and cross bar, securing together the latter and. the parallel end bars 13. The cross bar has frictionally mounted on it several pressure rolls 15, said rolls three in number in the present instance being adjustable along the cross rod 11' and rotatable thereon. The side arms 13 are offlat spring metal and at their lower M ends are provided with outwardly projecting pivot pins or pintles 16 which pivotally engage in bearing openings or depressions on the platen frame. The bearing opening at the left, indicated at 17, is formed in an integral part of the left-hand end bar 3. The
" right-hand pin 16, co-operates with a twopart hearing which is detachably secured to the right-hand end bar 4 of the platen frame. The parts 18 and 19 of said twopart bearing are shown detached in Fig. 5.
The part 18 is a-shoulder screw which is pro-' vided with a cylindrical enlargement or head 20-formed with a central depression, indicated at-21, to-receive the bearing A nick 22 cut crosswise in the head is adaptl ed to receive a tool by which the screw may be threaded into place in a tapped opening indicated at 23 in an integra part of the end bar 4. The other part 19 of the twopart bearing is a tube-or sleeve, being provided with a central opening indicated at 24 through which the sleeve 18 may pass freely.
This opening is in two diameters and the shoulder 25 formed at the junction of the parts of the opening 2 1 provides an abutof the endportion of the sleeve or art 19 against the contiguous face of them bar 4, and thus clamp the sleeve in place. This end portion of the sleeve is reduced in di motor, as indicated at 26, to provide a bear ing for an or swinging member 2t ;ment against which the inner end of the head 20 may engage so as to press the face res which is included in the line spacing mechanism of the machine, which mechanism may be of the character disclosed in my Patent No. 1,418,301, granted June 6, 1922. The sleeve 19 is also provided with a lug 28 formed with a hole 29 and at the inner side of said lug the sleeve is flattened as shown at to provide a stop face or shoulder. It will be understood that when the screw 18 is threaded into place it will clamp the sleeve 19 in fixed relationship to the end bar 4; and further that by loosening the screw, the sleeve or part 19 may be turned in either direction so as to vary the position of the stop face 30. There is suficient spring in the side arms 13 to enable the pivot pins 16 to be withdrawn from their bearing openings 17 and 21 so that the bail ma be detached. Also these pins may readily be snapped in place through the yielding of the arms 13 so that the bail may be quickly adjusted in 7 position on the machine.

The holder or housing 32 is an arm formed at one end with a circular depression or hole,
indicated at 33, which runs almost through,
the length of the arm and provides a socket or housing which completely closes and covers the coil spring 31 when it is arranged in the hole. The solid or lower portion of the tubular arm or socket piece 32 is flattened at one side, as indicated at 34,
and this flattened side has projecting from it a lateral .bearingpin 35 which is adapted to the hole 29 in the sleeve 19, the arm 32 being thus pivotally supported on the sleeve, the flattened face 34 being contiguous to the inner face of the lug 28. -The arm 32 is variably or slidably connected with the adjacent right-hand arm 13 of the bail through what is in e'fi'ect a in and slot connection. The inner wall 0 the tube or arm 32 at its upper or rear end is provided with an open-end slot, indicated at 36, through which passes the neck portion 37 of a device or ball-end pin which is secured to and projects laterally from the arm 13 the pin termiinating in a spherical head or ball 38 which is housed in the bore or hole 33, said head being of such diameter as to slide readily along the walls of said bore, the neck portion 37 of the spherical headed pin 37, 38 having free play lengthwise of the slot 36. The spring 31 is double acting. When it is in the Fig. 2 position it presses upward and rearward against the pin or device 37, 38, which transmits the reaction to the bail 11, 13, 15, causing the rolls 15 to bear with aspring pressure against the platen or the paper 33 thereon. v hen the bail is swung forward on its pivet 13 the spring 31 is first depressed between the pin 37, 38 and the bottom of the depression 33 until the central position is passed, when the reaction of the spring as itexpands will cause the bail to swing forward until arrested by contact of the under side of the arm 32 with the stop face or shoulder 34:, as shown in Fig. 3. The spring pressed bail co-operates with the usual feed rollers to press the paper smoothly against the front face of the platen. Also, said bail will hold and press the paper after its bottom edge passes upward out of control of the feed rollers.
It will be understood that in the swinging or forward and backward movements of the bail, its engagement with the arm 32 will vary by reason of the pin and slot connection between said arm and the bail. Also it will be apparent that the point of arrest of the forward swinging of the bail may be varied by an adjustment of the sleeve 19 and its stop face 30. This enables the most advantageous point of arrestto be readily obtained, such position being that which allows of the greatest possible for ward. swing of the bail which will permit the type bars of the machine to pass the bail rolls 15 without interference.
Various changes may be made without departing from my invention.
What 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. In a typewriting machine, the combi nationof a platen, a paper bail (lo-operative therewith, a bail spring, and a. housing therefor, said-housing being pivotally supported independently-of said bail and having a pin and slot connection with said hail.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, apaper ball, a projection on, said bail, a pivoted device provided with a slot which is engaged by said projection, and a coiled bail spring, seated in a depression in said device and abutting directly against said projection.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a co-operative paper bail, a ball device projectingfrom saidlhail, a tube slotted to receive said ball device and pqiivptally supported independently of said bail co-operative therewith, said bai1.com-' prising a cross bar, parallel side bars provided with pintles engaging bearings in said platen frame, said side arms, having sufficient spring to enable their pintles to be withdrawn from their bearings so that said bail may be readily detached, a bail spring, and a housing therefor connected to one of said side arms, said housing being provided with a pintle which may be withdrawn from its bearing when said bail is detached.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen frame, a platen, a 00- operating paper bail pivotally supported on said platen frame, a bail spring, a spring housing, and a two-part device providing a pivotal support for said housing and for said bail, said two-part device eomprisin a screw formed with a bearing opening an a 29 sleeve clamped by said screw and also formed with a bearing opening.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination-of a platen frame, a platen, a 00- operating bail pivotally supported on said platen frame, a bail spring, a pivoted arm housing said spring and having a variable connection with said bail, and a device on which said arm is pivoted, said device and said arm co-operating to limit the swinging movement of said bail away from the platen, said device being adjustably clamped in place so that the extent of swinging movement of the bail may be varied.
