To all whom it may cancer-72 Be itknown that I, LOREN TV. PENNEY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Newton Highlands, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements'in Revolving Clearers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to revolving clearers for the rolls of drawing frames and other machines used in the textile industry, and it is especially concerned with the adjustment of the clearer relativelyto the parts with which it cooperates.
As is well understood by those skilled in this art, it is customary to use a revolving clearer for the top rollsof drawing frames. In prior constructions it has been customary to support this clearer in such a manner that it could be adjusted to vary the tension 1 used in other relationships than that spe on the clearer cloth, but there has been no provision in these machines, so far as have been able to learn, for adjusting the clearer cloth with reference to the rolls. Such an adjustment is desirable to permit the setting of the clearer accurately with reference to the rolls, and to accommodate variations in the thickness for the leather covering for the rolls, when rolls of this character are used. It is the chief object of the present invention therefore, to devise an adjustment which will satisfy the practical requirements of machines of this character, which can be economically manufactured, and which will be convenient to use. It is also contemplated that the adjustment provided by this invention may be cifically referred to.

Referring first to Fig. 1, 2 designates one of the lower rolls of a drawing frame of well known construction, and 3 the upper leather covered rolls which cooperate with opposite sides of the'clearer 4 and supported by lugs 11 and 12, respectively, cast on the lower surface of the clearer cover 14:. I ferring to Figs. 2 and 3, it will be seen that the bracket lOis slotted, as shown at 16, to receive a bolt 17, Fig. 1, threaded into the lug 12. A screw 18 projecting loosely through a hole formed in the depending edge 19 of the cover let and threaded into a lug 2O projecting laterally from the bracket-l0, serves to adjust the bracket parallel to the clearer cover. While this adjustment is being made the bolt 17 is loosened but it is subsequently tightened to secure the bracket in, its adjusted position. The opposite bracket 9 is constructed and adjusted in the samemanner. This arrangement enables the operator to adjust the tension of the clearer belt 4. There was no provision in this prior construction, however, for adjusting the clearer vertically toward and from the top rolls 3. The present invention provides such an adjustment.
Referring again to Figs. 2and 3, it will be seen that the bracket 10 is grooved, as shown at 22, to provide a guideway in which a bearing block or slide 23 is mounted, this block having a hole 24 therein to receive the gudgeon which projects from the end of the shaped end of a set screw 27 normally is positioned in the groove 26, the set screw being threaded through the wall of the bracket 10, as clearly shown in the drawings.
hen the set screw 27 is loosened slightly it permits the adjusting screw to be turned, and the rotation of the latter screw moves the block 23 backward or forward in the guideway 22, thus adjustingthe roll 5 vertically with reference to .the cover 14, and also with reference to the drawing rolls 3. \Vhen the desired adjustment has been made the set screw 27 is turned in, thus locking the screw 25 against rotation and holding the parts in their adjusted positions.
The bracket 9 is constructed in the same manner, supporting a bearing block 23 which is adjusted by means of a screw 25.
Itwill be evident that this adjustment of the clearer toward and from the drawing rolls does not interfere in any way with the adjustment of the brackets 9 and 10 to vary the tension of the cloth 4. It will also be appreciated that the parts required for this adjustment can be manufactured very economically, that the adjusting operation is easily and quickly performed, and that when the adjustment has once been made there is substantially no danger of its becoming accidentally disturbed.
While I have herein shown and described the best embodiment of my invention that I have so far devised, it will be appreciated that thisembodiment may be modified in minor particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention. The invention has been herein disclosed as embodied in a drawing frame, but it will be appreciated that it is also applicable to other machines, such, for instance, as combers.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim as new is:
1. In a machine of the character de scribed, the combination of drawing rolls, a clearer cloth for acting on said drawing rolls, supporting means for said cloth including a roll, a bearing block at each end of said cloth supporting roll for supporting it, a bracket sup-porting each block, and
means supporting said brackets for adjustment in directions parallel to each other, said blocks being adjustable in said brackets at right angles to said directions.
2. In a. machine of the character described, the combination of drawing rolls, a clearer belt for said rolls, a roll supporting one end of said belt, a bearing block at each end of the last mentioned roll for supporting it, two brackets supporting said blocks. respectively, means supporting said brackets for adjustment to tighten said belt, and means for adjusting said blocks relatively to said brackets in directions at substantially right angles to said belt.
3. An adjustment of the character described, comprising a part having a guideway therein, a slide mounted in said guide way, a screw extending longitudinally of the guideway, said slide having a threaded groove therein to engage the threads of said screw, and a device for engaging said screw to prevent it from moving longitudinally of said guideway and adjustable to block the screw against rotation.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of drawing rolls, a clearer belt for said rolls, a roll supporting one end of said belt, a bearing block at each end of the last mentioned roll for supporting it, two brackets supporting said blocks, respectively, each of said brackets having a guideway in which its respective block is mounted, a screw cooperating with each block to adjust it in its'guideway, and means for locking said screw against rotation.
5. An adjustment of the character described, comprising a part having a guideway therein, a slide mounted in said guideway, a screw extending longitudinally of the guideway, said slide having a threaded groove therein to engage the threads of said screw, one wall of said guideway being grooved to receive said screw and said screw having a circumferential V-shaped groove therein, and a set screw mounted in said part and having a pointed end positioned in said circumferential groove.
6. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a horizontal series of drawing rolls, a clearer belt for said rolls, a clearer cover extending over said rolls and belt, supporting means for said belt including a roll carried by said cover, and means whereby said belt supporting roll may be adjusted both to tension said belt and also to change the vertical relationship of said belt to said drawing rolls.
7. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a horizontal series of drawing rolls, a clearer belt for said rolls, a clearer cover extending over said rolls and belt, supporting means for said belt including a roll, two bearing blocks supporting the opposite ends of said belt supporting roll, a bracket supporting each block, lugs projecting downwardly from said cover and to which said brackets are secured for adjustment parallel to the cover, each of said brackets having a guideway therein to receive its respective block, a screw extending longitudinally of said guideway, the wall of said guideway and the adjacent face of said block being grooved to receive said screw and the groove in said block having threads to engage the threads of said screw, and means for preventing said screw from moving longitudinally in the groove in said bracket and for locking the screw against rotation.
8. In a machine of the character described, the combination of drawing rolls, a clearer cloth for acting on said drawing rolls, supporting means for said cloth including a roll, two bearing blocks supporting the opposite ends of said cloth supporting roll, two brackets for supporting said blocks, respectively, a support for said brackets, each of said brackets having a guideway in which its respective block is mounted for adjustment, an adjusting screw extending longitudinally of each guideway,
the adjacent walls of the blocks and guideways being grooved to receive their respective screws and the blocks having threads to engage the threads of the screws, each screw having a circumferential groove therein, and a set screw mounted in each bracket and having its end positioned in said circumferential groove whereby it holds the adjusting screw against axial movement and is adjustable to lock the adjusting screw against rotation.
