Be it known that I, GUs'rAv LEIDENROTH, residing at Kettwig-Ruhr, Germany, a citizen of the German Republic, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Line-Spacing Mechanism for Typewriting;

The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which show one embodiment of the subject matter of the invention by way of example and in which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal seo tion of the mechanism, a portion being broken away, and
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, seen from the left.
The paper roller A is fixed on a hollow shaft C carried in bearings in the frame B of the typewriting machine. Upon the hollow shaft C there is mounted to rotate freely, a line spacing ratchet wheel D which is provided with a milled head Z1 and into the gaps between the teeth of which a locking roller E, mounted on the frame B, is adapted to enter under the action of Y a spring F. The locking roller allows the ratchet wheel D to rotate in either one direction or the other. The ratchet wheel D is connected to the free end'of the hollow shaft C, which is enlarged into a disc 01, and by the said hollow shaft C to: the paper roller A, by a clamping catch, which Vcan` be thrown out of operation. The clamping catch is made double-acting and consists of four balls G and G1, each two of the four balls being controlled by a spring H and lying between the cylindrical inner wall d2 of the ratchet wheel D and an eccentric '.tLted.

As will result from the above description, only one single member has to be operated for any kind of movement or" the paper roller A.
Claims.
1. In a line-spacing mechanism for type- Writing machines, a platen, a line-spacing ratchet Wheel, a clutch mechanism connecting said ratchet Wheel to said platen and a hand Wheel connected to said clutch for simultaneously disengaging said clutch and rotating said platen independently of said line-Spacing ratchet Wheel.
2. In a line-spacing mechanism for type- Writing machines a platen, a line-spacing ratchet Wheel, a clutch Jfor connecting said ratchet Wheel to said platen and a member operatable independently of said ratchet Wheel and engaging said clutch for throwing the same ont of operation and for rotating said platen.
3. In a line-spacing mechanism the combination With a platen of a line-spacing ratchet Wheel, a clutch mechanism associated With said ratchet Wheel for connecting said ratchet Wheel to said platen, a member secured to said platen and forming an element of said clutch mechanism, tappets carried by said member and means operatable independently of said ratchet Wheel for disengaging said clutch and engaging said tappets for rotating said platen.
4. The combination with a platen of a line-spacing mechanism comprising a ratchet Wheel, a clutch mechanism associated with said ratchet Wheel for operatively connecting the same to said platen, a diskshaped member secured to Said platen and forming an element of said clutch mech'- anism, tappets carried by said disk-shaped member, and means operatively engaging said clutch for disconnecting the same, said means engaging said tappets for rotating said platen independently of said ratchet wheel and springs for returning said clutch disengaging means to its inoperative posi` tion.
5. The combination With a platen o a line-spacing mechanism comprising a holloW ratchet Wheel, a clutch mechanism for connecting said ratchet Wheel to said platen comprising an oval-shaped disk disposed Within said ratchet Wheel and connected to said platen, tappets carried by said disk, a plurality of clutching balls disposed between the periphery of said disk and the inside face of. said 'ratchet Wheel, a second disk-shaped member disposed adjacent said clutch mechanism, said second disk-shaped member being provided with projections adapted to engage said balls and slots for engaging said tappets and means for rotating said second disk whereby said clutching balls will be first moved to an inoperative position and said platen rotated independently of the ratchet Wheel by the engagement of said second disk With the tappets carried by'said first mentioned disk.
