UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK H. LANGMUIR, OF RAGINE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO 'I-IARTMANN TRUNK COMPANY, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
GARMENT-HANGER rIxr-Uan Application filed April 6,
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FRANK H. LANG- Mmn. a subject of the King of England, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hanger Fixtures, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garment hanger fixtures, more particularly adapted for wardrobe trunks.
Trunks of this type are usually divided vertically medially of their length into two sections which are hinged together and are adapted to be swung laterally to open position to gain access to the interior of the sections. One of the sections is usually di vided into drawer and other compartments and the other section is usually adapted to ,hold the wardrobe and is provided with extensible rails forholding garment hangers thereon. The wardrobe section is usually open at its upper end and is provided with a to cover which is hinged to the V wardrobe section or to the drawer sect-ion.
As the open end of the section materially weakens the end construction of the section, the top covers are adapted to overlap the upper edges of the wardrobe section and said overlapped portion, in the nomenclature of the art, is called the collar.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome the before mentioned objectionable featuresand provide a garment hanger fixture which will materially reinforce said open end in a very simple manner. 1 7 40. A further object of the invention is .to 7 provide a garment hanger fixture which is, combined with-the valance of the trunk and reinforces the upper open end of the trunk.
A further object of the invention is to provide a garment hanger fixture having av novel means for reinforcing the corner portions of the trunk,
A further object of the invention is to provide a garment hanger fixture combined with a U-shaped valance member in a manner to reinforce the upper open end of the trunk.
A further. object of the invention is to provide a garment hanger fixture having 1923. Serial No. 630,287.
means for engaging andv holding a curtain fixture for protecting the open portion of the wardrobe section.
A further object of the invention is to provide a garment hanger fixture having hinged extensions which may be swungoutwardly to permit convenient access to garments draped on garment hangers slidably mounted on the fixture.
A further object of the invention is to 7 With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists of the improved garment hanger fixture and its parts and combinations'as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawings in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. 1 is'a perspective View of a wardrobe trunk, embodying the improved garment hanger fixture;
' Fig. 2 is a front view of the upper portion .of the wardrobe section of the trunk taken on a larger scale;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view'taken on line 33 of Fig.- 4.
Fig. 4 is a top view of thew'ardrobe section, parts broken away and other parts being in section to show interior construction;
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a corner portion of the trunk;
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view showing the hinge connection of the extension track with the main track portion;
Fig. 7 is a sectional detail view of a slightly modified form of track; and
Fig. 8 is a transversesectional detail view of a corner portion of the trunk.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 8' indicates the trunk body generally which is divided centrally vertically to form a body portion 9 and a wardrobe section 10 hinged thereto and arranged to be swung horizontally to open position. The upper end of the wardrobe section is open as indicated by thev numeral 11 and is covered by a top cover' 12 which is hinged to the upper rear edge of the wardrobe section. The top cover is provided with depending rear and side flanges 13 which are adapted to overlap the upper edges of the wardrobe section when the cover is in closed position. The improved garment hanger fixture is formed of a strip of sheet metal which is bent to form the U-shaped reinforcing collar channel 1% adapted to extend over the upper rear and side edges of the said wardrobe section, as shown in the drawings. The inner opposite side portions 15 of the channel extend downwardly a greater distance than the outer sides 16 and are angled inwardly horizontally at right angles to form spacing portions 17, and then angled diagonally and then upwardly and then horizontally and then downwardly to form the track portions 18 upon which the garment hangers 19 are slidably mounted. The rear inner side edge portions 20 of the track parts are bent at right angles toward each other and are secured to the rear portions of the trunk by rivets 21. Angular reinforcing corner members 22 are positioned in the corner portions of the trunk collar and riveted to the collar and trunk, and are provided with upper outwardly extending parts 22 which cover the upper ends of the trunk. corners 23 and reinforce the parts connected thereto. Angular bracket members 24 connected to the forward ends of the track parts and trunk sides also serve as lower supports for the hinge members 25 which are mounted in the outer ends of the fixed tracks 18 and in the inner ends of the extensible tracks 26. The extensible tracks are also formed of sheet metal of channel form in cross section and are connected to the hinge members in a manner to form a smooth upper surface in alinement with the fixed tracks while permitting the extensible tracks to be folded at right angles towards each other with relation to the fixed tracks.
To prevent the garment hangers from accidentally sliding off the outer ends of the extensible tracks, they are provided with upwardly extending stop projections 27 at their outer ends. One of said outer ends is also provided with a locking member 28 of hook-like form which is adapted to enter an aperture 29 formed in the other outer end to lock the two together when in closed position.
The reinforcing corner members 22 have upwardly projecting curved hook members 30 which are positioned to receive the perforated end portions 31 of the upper bar 32 of a curtain 33 adapted to cover the open portions of the wardrobe section. The lower end of the curtain may be connected to the 7 shoe box 34: in any manner desired.
In the modified form shownin Fig. 7, the channel portion 14 is formed separately from the horizontal portion 17 and the parts may overlap each other as indicated by the numeral 35.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the hanger fixture is combined with the upper edge reinforcement in a manner to firmly reinforce the open end of the trunk while at the same time providing a fixture which is very light in weight and is strong and durable, and well adapted for the purpose described. 1
