To all whom it may coac- Be it known that l, in innonn, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ire.- land, residing at E lanchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Brooches and like Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to iastenings for 1 brooches, safety pins and like articles and has for its object to provide an improved device for additionally securing the article in such a manner that if the main pin or fastening thereof breaks or becomes untas toned the article will still remain attached to the wearer and will, therefore, not be lost.
To this end according to the invention the device comprises a member secured at one end to the brooch or other article, its other end being adapted to be d-etachably connected to the usual securing pin thereof after the latter has'been passed through the material to which the article is to be secured.
in one suitable construction according to 5 the invention the device consists of a suitably bent wire, one end of which is attached to the usual hinged or spring securing pin of the article inany suitable manner, the other end being formed with a hook adapteo ed to be hooked. over the said pin thus forming a loop. A link attached to the article is passed on to the wire, the link being of such a size and so positioned on the article that the securing pin can be opened or closed about its hinge in the usual manner.
With an article fitted with'a device of this kind, to attach same to the wearer the hooked end of the wire is detached from the pin and the latter inserted in the cloth ing as usual, the hooked end of the wire is then replaced on the pin and the article is closed in the usual manner.
It will be obvious that with this arrangement should the article break away from its pin either completely or at either end, then it will still be retained by the link working in the loop attached to the pin.
Various forms of the device may be constructed.
To enable the invention to be fully understood it will now be described by referenceto the accompanying drawings, in which:

in the form shown in Fig. 1, the brooch 1 having a hinged securing pin 2 is provided according to the invention with a loop 8 formed of wire one end 4: being secured to the pin by twisting it tigntly around same, the other end being formed with a hook 5 adapted to snap over the pin 2 near the end thereof. The end a is preferably formed with an additional coil or coils as shown to givespring to the wire. With this construction to attach the brooch the hook 5 is detached from the pin and the latter inserted in the material 6 (Fig. 6) in the usual way;v the hook 5 is then snapped over the projecting portion of the pin and the brooch is fastened in the'usual manner, the
parts then being in the'positions as shown in Fig. 6. Should the brooch then become unlastened the loop 3 still retains the brooch in the material as shown in Fig. 7.
Fig. 2 shows a modification in which a link 7' is attached to the brooch 1 near its hinge, said link having the loop 3 passed there-through. With this arrangement if the brooch breaks away at either end, or completely away "from its pin as shown in Fig. 8, it is still retained on the loop 3 and thus is not lost. The link 7 may be so p0- sitioned and of such a size as to permit opening and closing of the brooch pin to the desired extent.
As a modification of the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the wire loop 3 may be secured at one end to the brooch body and passed through an eye or the like secured upon the securing pin, see Fig. 2.
In the construction shown in 3, the end at ot-the loop 3 is extended and provided with a sharpened portion 8 which is bent as shown to form an additional pin .or entering the material to prevent dro ing of the brooch. ig. t shows the loop 3 formed of a wire having one end attached to bush or sleeve 9 soldered upon the pin 2. shows the loop formed or a wire one end pivotally attached to a split sleeve 9 trictionally secured upon the pin Figs. 9 and 10 show a friction locking plate 20 drawn to a larger scale which may be advantageously emplmxed for securing; the additional fastening member to the brooch pin as shown in Figs. 11 to 15 and Fig. 17. This plate is curved as shown and provided with two holes 2i so that the plate can be passed on to the brooch pin, the upturned ends 22 then bearing on the pin and holding said plate in frictional en gageinent with the pin.
In the form shown in 11, the wire loop 8 is shown secured LO the pin 2 by twisting one end round said pin.
It is difficult in practice to secure the loop etl'ectively in this manner. it, however, the plate 20 is used, it is not necessary that the twisted end of the loop should be tight on the pin. The twist may be formed in t is loop and placed in the centre ot the plate 20,;and the brooch pin passed through the holes 21 and the twist, the plate frictionally looking on the pin and keeping the twist in place.
Fig. 11 shows the plate 20 with the ends 22 bearing on the inside of pin 2.
Fig. 12 shows the plate 20 with the ends 22 bearing on the outside of pin 2, the loop 3 being brought through a hole in the plate.
Fig. 13 shows "the plate 20 used with a flexible member 10 having the spring portion 11. In this case the securing ring 2 3 of member 10 may be a loose lit on the pin 2. The spring 11 is not essential, but would be preferably used.

It will be understood that the device constructed according to the invention is applicable to articles having securing pins other than pivoted pins, for example pins having flexible hinges such as the spring coil hinge or" a safety pin.
What I claim is A supplemental securing device for brooches and like articles comprising in combination a flexible member secured to the brooch pin by friction at one end and adapted to engage said pin at the other end, and a link secured to the article at one end and engaging the flexible member at the other end, substantially as described.
