IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-FILES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,878, dated March 24, 1874; application filed May 5, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY WALLACE DovEToN DUNLOP, of Dublin, Ireland, have invented a new or Improved'Paper-Fle, of which the following is a speeication:

My invention is chiefly designed to supersede the present book indexes and catalogues for use in libraries, public and other offices, banks, courts, and elsewhere, and which, by the constant alteration and interpolation of entries, involve constant trouble, and have frequently to be recommenced, in order to keep the entries in their proper order. It is also applicable for persons engaged in compilin g dictionaries or encyclopedias.

This invention consists in the combination ot' certain slotted index or alphabet cards, with a securing-rod and an inclosing-case, as will be fully described hereinafter.

In the drawings is represented a perspective view of my invention.

A is a frame, of convenient size and shape, i'or supporting the labels. It may be formed to be placed in and drawn from a troughshaped recipient, or supported in any convenient manner. The frames may be arranged side by side and rest on edges forming guideways for them. D B a-re pla-tes, counters, la bels, or disks, which may be of card-board, metal, vulcanized rubber, bone, or other suitable material. Each label is slotted at c, to permit the insertion of a rod, D, resting at its ends in bearings provided for it at the ends of the frame A, by which rod, When in place, the labels are secured from being removed or unintentionally displaced. The said rod may he held in place by a padlock, as shown, or other like contrivance. Each label bears a proper inscription or entry affixed to its upper portion. The labels are preferably made of vegetable parchment, or other similar substance, such as paper treated with chloride ot' zine, to harden it, a slot being formed in each of the said tickets, as above described, for

the passage of the rod. The end of the said rod is bent and formed with a slot, D1. An eye, D2, is screwed in the end of the frame. The link of a padlock, f, is passed through the said slot and ring, and locked, to secure the rod, or the rod may be locked in any other suitable manner. The labels may be raised and bent back, as shown.

Let it be supposed that the apparatus is applied to the cataloguing ot' a library, and that each frame holds a number of labels, according to the different letters of the alphabet, one or more frames for each letter, as may be required. As each book is catalogued alphabetieally, a reference is marked on the labels, or Written or printed on a piece of paper, which is pasted or otherwise attached to one of the labels. ranged in their proper alphabetical or dictionary order or position. The rod, which was withdrawn during the arrangement ot' the labels, is replaced by causing it to pass through all the labels, which are thereby secured in their position.

For facility of reference, either of the plates or labels B may be raised as far as permitted by the slot, and if the plate or label is iexible, its upper portion, bearing the inscription or entry, may be turned over to admit ot' any alteration in, or addition to, the entry or inscription being conveniently made.

I claim as my inventionl. The described apparatus, consisting, essentially, of slotted cards adapted for longitudinal movement, substantially as described, a securing-rod, and a suitable support for the rod, combined as and for the purpose set forth.
