IMPROVEMENT IN RAZOR-STROPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,848, dated March 24, 1874; application filed February 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHARLEs O. Enzymes, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a Surface for Leather Straps, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is an improved surface upon leather straps, for the purpose of setting a fine cutting-edge upon razors and other implements req nirin g a similar edge.
The method of producing my improved sur face upon razor-strops is described as follows:
By means of some instrument suited to the purposel prefer a revolving wheel coated with emery or sand-I take a thin cutting from the grain side of the strap, or of the leather from which the strap is to be cut.
Specimen No. 1 is a strap from which the grain has been cut away, and is in a proper condition for use. No. 2 is a strap of leather which has the grain cut away from one half its length, the grain remaining upon the other half, showing the difference between the surface of the grain and the surface which has been produced by cutting away the grain with an emery-wheel.
It will be seen upon examination that, between the smooth and firm surface upon the gr in side and the more coarse and hard fiber composing the body of the leather, there is a fine soft film or lining, which is peculiarly adapted to setting a fine and keen edge upon a razor.
It is desirable that a razor-strop should be made of thick leather, like the specimens presented; but it has heretofore been impractical, the flesh side being too harsh, and the grain side too smooth for the purpose. If the strap is thin, it is inclined to bend too short beneath the razor, and make the edge roundin g. To avoid this, straps of thin leather have been pasted together to increase the thickness, so that the flesh side of the calf-skin and other fine, thin leather could be used upon a thick strap.
