Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. HART, citizen of the United States, and resident of New Britain, in ,the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented c ertain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification. i
My present invention relates to paper feeding and controlling mechanism for typewriting machines and its general object is to provide new and improved mechanism of the character stated. More specifically my invention has to to with what is commonly known as tally roll mechanism, and
has for its object the production of improved tally roll mechanism having a number of novel features.
To the above and'other ends which will 2 hereinafter appear my invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts herein- 7 after described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring generally to the present embodiment of the invention some of its new and improved features of construction, the mechanism is constructed as a separate unit, composed of the tally roll mechanism 3 and movably mounted on the carriage of the typewriting machine. The tally mechanism proper embodies rotary supply carriers for both work sheets or paper and reproduction sheets or carbon strips, both such sheets being friction driven, being advanced when the platen is turned or line spaced through cooperation between the platen and the regular carriage feed rolls. There is also provided a take-up or receiving device for the tally strip in the form of a rotary carrier having frictional connections with the platen. The tally roll mechanism or contrivance is adjustable on its support so that it may be set at any desired position lengthwise of the platen or may be constructed so as to carry sheets or strips substantially as wide as the full length of the platen, being thus adapted for the handling of proof sheets, sales sheets, etc. The method of mounting and controlling the carbon sheet or strip is such as to permit ready access to the tally strip or proof sheet at all times so that inspection and the making of corproper and a support therefor, detachably rections is greatly facilitated as compared with prior constructions. There is provided an improved rewindfor the carbon strip combined with a stop or arresting device which is automatically set so as progressively to vary the feed of the carbon, thus thoroughly exhausting its reproducing surface. The take-up or receiving roll as well as the delivery or pay-ofl' roll for the tally strip are provided with looking devices to prevent improper unwinding, the locking device for the delivery roll being auto-; matically controlled. There is also provided a knife bar or severing device for the cutting of the used strips said device being conveniently controlled and also having the function of a paper guide. Other novel features of my invention will be referred to hereinafter.

plate 1 or upper framing of the Remington typewriting machine is provided with posts or lugs 2 and .3 to which are secured fixed grooved guide rails 4 and 5, said rails co.- operating through anti-friction rollers 6 with the front and rear grooved bars 7, 8 of down on the truck, the shifting movements being determined by stop devices, not shown, which project into the openings 14 at its top and bottom. Co-operative with the platen are the usual paper feeding devices comprising main and secondary feed rollers conventionally illustrated herein and numbered respectively 15 and 16, these feed rollers normally co-operating with the platen to' feed or advance the paper thereover, but being adapted to be thrown off or released by releasing devices comprising a releasing shaft 17 which extends from side to side of the platen frame and is supported in the end bars 10. Said shaft is provided near its left-hand end with a release key comprising an upstanding crank arm 18 suitably secured to the releasing rock shaft 17 and provided with a horizontal portion or off-set 19 from which rises a finger-piece or key portion 20. The engaged or operated position of the feed rollers 15 and 16 is illustrated in Figs. land 7 while the throw-off or released position is illustrated in Fig. 6, the release being effected through well-known connecting means by rocking the shaft 17 as by push ing the release key 20 back from the Fig. 1 position to the Fig. 6 position. Operatively connected with the right-hand end of the platen 12 is a line spacing ratchet wheel 21 with which co-operates a line spacing pawl 22 supported from the platen axle and connected by a' link 23 with a bell crank 24 pivoted at 25 on the right-hand end bar 9 and connected by a link 26 with a crank arm 27 fixed to the rear end of a spring pressed rock shaft 28, said rock shaft extending forward above and parallel with the right-hand end bar and terminating in a downward extension or handle 29. The rock shaft is mounted to rock in a bearing 30 fixed to the right-hand end bar 9 and. as is well understood when the line spacing handle or fingerpiece 29 is pulled toward the right it is effective to actuate the pawl 22 to co-operate withthe wheel 21 to turn the platenthrough a line space distance and is also effective to restore the platen and platen carriage comrising the platen frame and the truck from its. to right to position the platen for beginning a new line of writing.

scale bar secured to the truck bar 7, the arms converging slightly from the rear towards the front, their outer ends being formed with holes which receive screw pivots 38, whereby the supporting frame comprising the brackets 33 and the tie rod 36 is pivotally connected to the carriage truck and is adaptedto shift on said screw pivots 38 as pivotal centers when the platen and platen frame are shifted to change case, thereby maintaining the tallyroll mechanism proper in substantially the same relationship with the platen in both lower and upper case positions. .The tally strip contrivance or mechanism proper is mounted on the cross rod 36, which is disposed slightly above the platen, and on a rock shaft 39 which bears in openings in the upper end portions of the upright arms 35, said rock shaft being parallel with the "tie rod 36 and somewhat/ adapted to turn freely in its bearings but is prevented from longitudinal mdvements therein by collars 40 which are secured to the rock shaft 39 by set screws 41 inside the arms 35 with which arms said-collars cooperate to prevent the rock shaft from moving endwise in either direction.
The tally strip contrivance or mechanism proper is mounted so that it may be adjusted along the supports or rods 36 and 39' for co-operation With the platen at any desired position longitudinally thereof, said contrivance comprising upright frame plates 42 having a slight rearward inclination (Figs. 1,5, 5*, 7, 8 and 10). The lower end portions of the frame plates 42' are connected or tied together by a sleeve 43 which fits over and bears on the rod 36,

proof sheet or tally sheet or strip is wide or narrow, the sub-frame may be substantially coextensive in length with the length of the platen as one limit, or may be considerably narrower than shown in the drawing. The frame plates 42 are perforated to permit the passage t-herethrough of the upper rod 36, certain parts intervening between the rod and the frame plate at the left-hand side as will be hereinafter eX- plained. Bearing on the sleeve or hollow rod 43 inside the frame plates 42 are two metal disks or friction rollers 45 which are adapted to bear rotatably on the upper surface of the platen for motion transmitting purposes. In order to insure sufficient friction between the friction rollers and the platen it is preferred to supplement the gravity .of the tally roll eontrivance and its support by spring means, and accordingly a pair of coiled draw springs 46 are provided, one arranged at each side of the machine. The upper end of each spring 46 is hooked over a pin 47 projecting laterally from the adjacent arm 35 while the lower end of each spring is connected to a hook contrivance 48 which in turn is anchored to the rock shaft 17. The tendency of these springs 46 is to pull the frame 33,
.36 downward about its pivots 38 and constantly to maintain the friction rollers 45 in contactive resilient engagement with the top of the platen 12 so that rotary move-. merits of the platen will be transmitted to the friction rollers.
The sub-frame 42, 43 provides a support for the several rotary carriers or mandrels comprised in the tally device or contrivance, there being three of such carriers in the present instance, viz., a carrier for delivering or supplying the tally strip, a carrier for receiving or taking up the tally strip after it has been fed around the platen and written upon, and a carrier or support for the roll of transfer material or carbon paper, the last named carrier being arranged at the top of the sub-frame, the tally supply carrier being arranged next below and the take-up carrier being lowermost and co-operating with the friction rollers 45. Considering first the construction and mounting of the delivery or supply carrier or mandrel, Figs. 1, .5 and 7, said mandrel designated as a whole by the reference numeral 49 comprises primarily a hol- 1,4ss,24a
low tube or core piece 50, end plugs or hearing devices 51 and 52, and heads or flanges 53 and 54. The tube 50 and plugs 51 and 52 are suitably secured together as by screws and 56. The left-hand flange 53 is rigid with a hub piece 57 and said hub piece and the plug 51 are perforated to affordpassageway for a shaft'or rod 58 which extends into the core or tube 50 and also projects outward beyond the hub 57 and bears in an opening in the left-hand frame plate 42. \Vithin the tube 50 the shaft 58 bears in a countersink or depression indicated at 59 formed in the end piece 52. The shaft 58 is spring mounted, being surrounded within the tube 50 by a coiled spring 60 which is confined between the inner end of the plug 52 and a collar 61 pinned to the shaft at 62, said spring normally maintaining the collar in contact with the inner end of the plug 51 shown in Fig. 5. The outer end of the shaft 58 is formed with a depression or nick 63 for the reception of a tool by which it may be'pushed rightward endwise and forced through its bearing opening in the frame plate 42, against the spring 60. The shaft 58 may thus be slid rightward in its hearing 59 and through the end plug 51 sulficiently to clear the frame plate 42, enabling the supply carrier 49 to be withdrawn. Re ferring now to the manner of supporting the carrier 49 on the right-hand frame plate 42 it will be observed particularly from Fig. 5 that the end plug 52 is formed'at its right-hand end portion with a series of circular portions or faces of varying diameters indicated respectively at 52, 52 52 and 52. The flange 54 fits over the face 52 and abuts against the right-hand side of the shoulder formed between it and the face 52 The face 52 engages in a bearing opening or depression indicated at 64 in a hollow bearing member or housing which is suitablysecured in the righthand frame plate 42. This may be done by forming the housing with a reduced shoulder portion 66 at its inner end which is passed through an opening of suitable diameter in the frame plate and is then upset or spread at its inner end, thus clamping the housing to the frame plate. The housing also provides a support for a key member comprising a body portion 67, a head 68 which is cylindrical in shape and bears in the depression 64, terminating at its inner end in a flat sided lug or key portion 69 which normally fits in a slot or kerf 70 cut in the outer face of the plug Projecting rightwardly outside the housing 65 the body portion of the key member is reduced as indicated at 67 and threaded to receive a finger button or thumb nut 71 which is screwed on the reduced portion, being adapted to abut against the right hand end of the body portion 67. Surrounding said body portion inside the housing is a coiled spring 72 which reacts against the housing and normally maintains the key 69 engaged with the slot 70 so that will be observed that the reaction of the shaft 58 as-described 7 far enough from its to enable the entire spring 60 through the collar 61and the end piece 52 insures that normally the end supports of the supply carrier, constituted at J the left by the shaft 58 and at the right by the surface 52", shall suitably be maintained engaged with their hearings on the frame plates 42. On the other hand, the key member may be withdrawn from engagement with the supply carrier by pulling right ward on the finger button 71, depressing the spring 72 and withdrawing the lug 69 from the slot 70.
In addition to the flange or head 54 the bearing portion or face 52 supports a ratchet'wheel 73 and a dished plate 74, the ratchet wheel being confined between the plate 74 and the head or flange 54 and the three being suitably secured in place on the bearing portion 52 The outer end is or may be offset to prevent displacement of the three parts. The dished'plate copperates with the outer face of the ratchet wheel 73 to provide a groove or V-opening indicated at 75 in which is received a coiled brake spring 76 which passes over the top of the plate 74 and down at the front and rear sides thereof, the ends of said spring being secured to screws 7 7 screwed into the inner face of the right-hand side plate 42, Figs. 5 and 7. The brake spring co-operates with the supply carrier to prevent spin and consequent excess winding off of the tally work sheet, the spring applying a requisite amount of friction to the otherwise freely revoluble carrier or mandrel, and at the same time providing a reaction or take-up for the slight overthrow following each line. spacing operation. This reaction is due to the tendency of the spring to return to normal position after the slight stretching of its coils as thetally strip is line spaced and the carrier 49 is turned. The ratchet wheel 7 3 constitutes one element of a detent device which is automatically operated by the feed roll release as hereinafter ex plained to hold the carrier 49 from accidental turning movements at certain times.
- The tally strip indicated in Fig. 7 of the drawing by the numeral 78 is usually applied in a roll which is wound on a supply core 79 of fiber, pasteboard or the like, this core being slipped over the core 50 of the supply carrier, the latter being withdrawn from the machine and the left-hand flange 53 being removed to facilitate the introduction of the wound-up tally strip 78. In order to prevent the tally core 79 from slipping on the core 50 of the carrier or spool, there is provided a pin 80 (Fig. 5) which passes transversely through the plug '52 and core 50 near the right-hand end of the latter and terminates in an outwardly projecting sharpened or knife-like end 81,
said pin being adjustably secured in place by a set screw 82. When the tally roll is applied endwi'se' to the core piece 50 the tally core 79, as it nears the right-hand end of the carrier or holder 49, will engage at its right-hand end with the knife portion 81 of the pin 80, which will split or cut the core 79 slightly without interfering with its being fully applied to the core piece 50 and will thus fix the tally roll on the carriage 49 and prevent any relative turning or slipping when the supply carrier is in place and in use.
A will be understood from Fig. 7, the free end of the tally strip 78 is led off from the back of the tally roll and behind the supply carrier 49 downward into the bight of the platen 12 and main feed roller 15, and thence under and around the platen and between it and the front feed roller 16 and up at the front side of the platen through and. over devices hereinafter described and to the take-up or receiving device or rotary carrier for the tally. The take-up carrier designated as a whole by the numeral 83, best shown in Figs. 1, 5, 7 and 10, comprises a tubular body portion or sleeve 84, in the ends of which are fitted cylindrical plugs or closures 85 and 86. These end plugs are suitably secured in place so as to constitute with thesleeve 84 a single rotary member. The. left-hand end plug 85 is provided at its outer'surface with a series of ratchet teeth 87 to co-operate with a locking pawl or check to be later described. The ratchet teeth 87 are so cut however as not to interfere with the smooth contact of the'plug 85 with the friction roller 45 as hereinafter set forth. The end plugs 85 and 86 are perforated to receive a rod or shaft 88 which extend longitudinally through the carrier 83 and constitutes an axle therefor. The end portions of the shaft 88 project outward through vertical slotways indicated at 89 formed in the frame plates 42, and these projecting portions are axle 88 downward in its slotways or bearing openings 89, the result being that a constant I downward pressure is applied to the tally receiving holder or carrier 83. The friction rollers 45 co-operate with the projecting end portions of the two heads or end plugs 85 and 86, these projecting portions being slightly less in diameter than the outer diameter of the tube 84, co-operating with said tube to provide circular depressions or ways indicated at 92 in which the friction rollers 45 are adapted to run. Said friction rollers loosely fit in said runways, so that while rotation on the sleeve 43 is not interfered with they are prevented from being displaced endwise along said sleeve. It will be understood that the spring pressure exerted by the springs 91 is transmitted through the carrier 83 to the friction rollers 45, said springs serving to maintain said rollers resiliently and co-operatively engaged with both the platen 12 and the carrier 83 with the result that line spacing or turning movements imparted to the platen will be transmitted through the rollers or idlers 45 to the carrier 83, causing the carrier to be turned automatically when the platen is line spaced or otherwise rotated. The slots 89 afford sufficient play to the carrier axle to allow for any unevenness or inequality that may arise in the course of the work. The free end of the tally stri .78 is led up at the front side of the carrier 83 and is suitably secured to the tube or core piece 84 as by a spring plate or clip 93 which may be of sheet metal curved to conform to the outer surface of the core 84 and arranged at the middle thereof, being secured along one of its edges to said core so that the advanced portion of the tally strip may be pushed under the free or spring edge of the clip and frictionally held thereby against detachment from the carrier 83. The construction is such that when the platen is line spa'ced or turned in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 7 the rollers or idlers 45 will be frictionally turned op positely and the carrier 83 will be consequently turned counter-clockwise as indi cated by its arrow to automatically take up the used portion of the tally strip.
The reproducing material or carbon stri designated by the numeral 94 (Fig 7) is preferably in roll form and supported or carried by a rotary carrier or-holder best shown in Figs. 1, 5 and 7. The carbon carrier or supporting device for the material or carbon paper 94 is designated as a whole by the numeral 95 and is-arranged at the top of the sub-frame above the tally supply carrier 49. The carrier 95 comprises a metal tube or hollow core 96 which is provided with end plugs 97 and 98 fitted into its ends and secured in place as by set screws 99. Outside the tube the end plugs are so shaped that they provide grooves or seats from the annular heads or flanges 100. The plugs 97 and 98 are provided respectively with hub ortion 97 and 98 which are perforated to a 0rd passageway for a shaft or rod 101 on which the carbon carrier 95 is mounted. The shaft 101 extends centrally through the core 96 and its right-hand end portion bears in an opening in the right-hand frame plate .2, the shaft 101 being reduced as indicated at 101 outside of said frame plate and threaded to receive a thumb nut or finger button 102. The left-hand projecting end portion of the shaft 101 carries a gear wheel or rotary member 103 having a function hereinafter described. Said gear wheel is provided with a hub 104 which bears in an opening in the left-hand frame plate 42, said hub outside said frame plate receiving a cross pin 105 whereby both the hub and the gear wheel 103 are fixedly secured to the shaft 101. It will be observed from Fig. 5 that the gear wheel 103 is arranged inside the frame plate 42, and also that the hub 98 and the inner end of the thumb nut 102 loosely confine the right-hand frame plate between them so as to prevent endwise displacement of the carrier 95 in either direction while affording free rotary movements thereof. The carrier 95 is provlded with a spring clip 106 similar to the spring p clip 93. Along one of its edges the spring clip 106 is secured. to the core 96 as by rivets 107 leaving the other edge portion of the clip 106 free to allow the ends of the carbon paper 94 to be passed under it and frictionally and detachablv secured .to the carrier 95. As shown in Fig. 7 the carbon paper .4 is led off from the back of the roll of carbon and down behind the carrier 95, passing into the bight of the platen 12 and the feed roller 15 in register with but behind the tally strip 78 and thence around the.
platen and between it and the forward feed roller or pressure device 16 and upward past the printing point outside the tally strip 78.
The advanced portion of the carbon sheet or strip 94 above the printing line is preferably left free or unattached and in order properly to guide and manipulate the free P end portion of the carbon, as well as the portion of the tally strip 78 between the platen and the holder 83, suitable devices are provided which are best illustrated in Figs. 1, and 5-9. Said devices comprise an inclined shelf or erasing plate 108 arranged above the platen, said shelf having .lateral ears or extensions 109 terminating beveled engaging portions 110- received in beveled openings indicated at 111 formed in the lower end portions 42 of the frame plates 42. These lower portions 42 project forward and terminate in straight edges in which the beveled openings 111 are cut. The construction provides for securely attaching the erasing plate-108 to the tally subframe, the beveled portion 110 of said plate fitting snugly in the openings 111, but the plate is readily removable when the subframe is taken apart. The mounting of the erasing plate gives it a suitable inclination upward and rearward from the platen above the printing face thereof and the lower edge portion of the plate 108 may be beveled at its rear side as at 108 so as to fit closely to the platen and provide a practically continuous surface upward from the printing linev and over the front face of the plate 108. Spaced forward from the upper side of the erasing plate so as to provide a guide opening indicated at 112 between them is a knife blade or severing bar 113 which is supported near its ends by headed pins 114 and 115. These pins are riveted or otherwise secured to the lateral portions 109 of the plate 108. Mounted on each pin back of the blade 113 is a spacing disk or washer 116 which separates the blade 113 from theplate 108 sufiiciently to provide the space or guide opening 112.
The left-hand pin 114 serves as a'pivot for the blade 113 and on which said blade may be swung upward asillustrated in Fig. 9. The right-hand end portion of the blade 113 is provided with an open-end slot indicated at 11.7 which fits over a shoulder 115 formed on the right-hand pin 115 behind its head, the construction securely locking the blade in place, while the shoulder further assists to hold the washer 116 in proper position on the pin and prevents looseness or rattle. The upper edge portion of the blade is beveled or sharpened as indicated at 113 to provide a cutting edge against Wl'llCll both the carbon paper and the tally v strip may be torn off by pulling forward,
over and downward against said edge. Also the lower edge 113 of the blade 113 may be beveled to widen the entrance into the slotway or guide opening 112. A friction washer1 14 may be inserted under the head of the pivot pin 114 in a countersink in the left-hand portion of the blade 113. As appears from Fig 7 both the tally strip 78 and the carbon strip 94 pass upward throu h this opening 112 and the free end of he carbon is prevented from dro in forward by -the blade 113. When, li we iier, it is desired to expose. the printed portion of the tally strip above the printing line the blade 113 may be swung upward on its pivot 114, thus freeing the end portion of the carbon strip so that it may be pulled forward exposlng the writing on the underlying tally strip. If it be desired -to correct or otherwise change the writing on the tally strip the erasing plate 108 affords a convenient surface against which erasures may be made. It will be observed that there is thus provided a construction which permits ready access to the written portion of the tally strip or proof sheet at alltimes without removing it from the machine for purposes of inspection or the making of corrections. The mortise and tenon connec tions between the sub-frame and the erasing plate while affording as stated ready disconnection increases the rigidity and stability of the sub-frame.

In. order to rewind or back feed the carbon so that it may be repeatedly used for the reproduction of matter on the tally strip, there is provided rewind mechanism comprising a coiled spring 118 (Figs. 5 and 7) which surrounds the shaft 101 within the core 96, said spring being secured at its right-hand end to the shaft, the lefthand end of said spring being hooked over the inner end of a pin 119 which is driven through the head 97 and projects from said head both inside and outside the carrier 95.
The outwardly projecting end portion ofsaid pin operates as a stop device in cooperation with other stop devices to limit the turning movement of the carbon carrier 95 inopposite directions. The spring 118 opposes" the turning of the carbon carrier to unwind the carbon therefrom and when the carbon is released from control of its feed ing devices said spring operates to turn'the carbon roll holder so as to rewind the carbon paper thereon, The stop devices referred to comprise a rotary stop member or Geneva wheel 120 which is mounted on the gear wheel 103 at the inner face thereof, being pivoted on a shoulder pin 121 which is secured as by riveting to-the wheel 103 near its periphery and projects laterally inwardly therefrom. The stop wheel 120 has two motions; motion of rotation on its axis 101 whichtakes place when the wheel- 120 is moved bodilyv during rotary movements of the gear wheel 103 on its axis 101.
The stop wheel or planetary stop 120 is nections between the formed in the present instance with four radial slots 122,123, 124 and 125 whichare joined by curved faces 126, and there is also provided a closed or stop face 127 which is 5 not slotted.
Before describing the co-operation between the pin stop 119 and the stop wheel 120 to limit turning movements of the carbon carrier in both directions I shall first describe a novel feature of the present invention involving an automatic setting of the stop wheel or device 120 through progressively varyingits bodily position, this being accomplished through a train of constop wheel and the paper feed releasing mechanism. Said train, which is illustrated in Figs. 1, 5 and 6, includes and begins with the gear wheel 103. Meshing with the gear wheel 103 at 29 its lower side is a small pinion 128, said pinion being mounted on the inner end of a stub shaft 129 which bears in an opening in the left-hand frame plate 42 and projects outwardly therethrough, the pinion 128 being arranged inside said frame plate. A pawl carrying arm or member 133 co-operates with said toothed wheel 130, the pawl member 133 being provided at its upper end with alaterally extending tooth 134 which is adapted to engage with a tooth of the wheel 130 at The lower end of the arm 133 terminates in a tail piece 135 and said arm is pivotally supported at 136 on a crank arm 137 which is provided with a squared hub 138 that fits over the rock shaft 39 out-- sidethe left-hand frame plate 42. The hub ward and slightly downward from said rock 138 has rounded corners 139 and receives two set screws -140 in two of them, being thus secured to the rock shaft 39 in such a way that the crank arm 137 projects rearshaft so as properly to locate the pivot 136 of the pawl arm or member 133. The construction of the hub portion 138 and its mounting relative to the associate frame plate 42 is brought out clearly in Fig. 5
The hub member 138 is provided to the right of its main or body portion with a series of circular portions having graduated diameters numbered for the sake of clearness SL138, 138', 138 and 138, these portions forming shoulders with each other. The crank arm 137 is fitted over and staked or otherwise secured to the portion 138 of the hub and abuts against the side face of the portion 138, said crank arm being contiguous to the outer face of the frame plate 42.
The hub portion 138 bears in the bearing o ening in said frame plate, and the portionf138 which projects inwardly beyond said frame plate has staked or otherwise sesaid in passing that the screws 140 by which the collar 141 is detachably secured to the rock shaft 39 also operate to secure or set the sub-frame 42, 43 and the parts mounted thereon in desired positions lengthwise of the carriage and platen and that it is only necessary to loosen these screws to enable the sub-frame to be moved rightward on its supports longitudinally of the platen. The leftward movement requires the loosening of an additional screw of a pawl member hereinafter described. Returning now to'the connecting train or those elements of it leading down from the rock shaft 39 to the release shaft 17. said elements comprisea crank arm 142, which is arranged on the end portion of the rock shaft 39 projecting beyond the left-hand bracket 35, said crank arm being provided with a hub 143 which fits over said projecting portion of the rock shaft. The hub is square in cross section with rounded corners 144, two of which receive set screws 145 whereby the hub and crank arm are fixed to the rock shaft, the crank arm projecting forward and slightly downward therefrom. Pivotally connected by a headed pin or rivet 146 or other suitable device to the other end of the crank arm is a downwardly and rearwardly extending link 147 which terminates at its lower end in a hook 148'which hooks over and under the offset portion 19 of the release key member 1820. The link 147, 148 carries a latch 149 which is pivoted to it at 150. The lower end of the latch or arm 149 is curved at 151 on an arc struck from the axis 150, this curved portion co-operating with the top portion of the offset 19 to maintain the hook engaged therewith. Near its upper end the arm 149 is depressed to provide a bulge or projection 152 which co-operates with a hole 153 in the link 147, to maintain the latch 149 in operative posi tion. The latch has sufficient spring to en by actuating the key 20, the link 147, 148 -will transmit this movement to the crank a-rm 142, rocking the shaft 39 and swinging the crank arm 137 upward, causing the pawl member 133, 134 to engage with the toothed wheel 130 and turn it a predeterminedextent comprising one or more units of distance in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, the predetermined extent of turning depending on the adjustment of the parts. The normal position of the above parts is illustrated in Fig. 1, while the operated position is shown in Fig. 6.. Assumin the stop wheel 120 to start from the position illustrated in Fig. 1, each of these impulses received when the feed rollers are released will advance or move said stop wheel bodily inthe direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, resulting in the progressive step-by-step advance of the stop face 127.
This result is illustrated in Fig. 4. which is drawn on an enlarged scale and showing the first position of the stop wheel 120 and stop pin 119 in full lines, with the stop face 127 cngaged'b-y said pin in. correspondence with the position of the parts in Fig. 1. In Fig. 4 several progressive steps or advances of the stop wheel 120 and its stopping face 127 are illustrated by dotted line positions of the parts, and as 'clearly appears the result will be thatthe stop pin 119 will be arrested at successive points in advance of its first position. In other vwords, supposing the platen to be line spaced or turned to feed the tally strip and turn the carbon roll carrier 95, thus carrying the pin 119 away from the 'stopface 127 and winding up the spring 118, it will be understood that on re-.
leasing the feed rollers and freeing the carbon the stop face 127 will receive automatically an advance movement so that as the carbon is rewound and the carrier turned back it will be arrested in advance of the position from which it startedby reason of the contact of the stop pin 119 with the stop face 127 in its new position. The progressive change of position of the carbon carrier does not affect 1ts spring, since 1n all pos1-" tions the normal relationship of the two ends of said springis the same. By providing however automatic stop setting means whereby the position of arrest of the car- 10 bon carrier is progressively advanced as -described there is-introduced a valuable feature, especially in connection with such com-- mon work as ledger posting or the like where single line entries are therule. In such cases so short a section of carbon will be brought into play that it would very quickly become exhausted and would soon require a readjustment of the stopping point on the rewind. Assuming however that work of this character was being done and that the outer sheet 157 illustrated in Fig. 7 is one of those on which only a single entry is to be made, it will be understood that such entry will be printed on the sheet at the front side of the platen by the type bars 31 through the inking ribbon 32,"the entry be ing duplicated through the carbon 94 which i is behind the work sheet 157 on the underlyin g tally strip 78, the, carbon face of the paper 94 of course being turned inwardso that it is in contact withthev outer face of the tally strip 78. Tltewriting on the lat ter having been completed the platenmay be restored from left to right and line spaced by operating the handle 29', and the feed roller release may be actuated to free the sheet 157 so that it may be withdrawn and replaced by a new sheet. Such actuation of the release will result as described inJt'n ad-' vance'or step forward of'the stop 120 and 50 turned on its axis a consequent slight alteration in the normal position of the carbon roll, thus correspondingly changing the line on the carbon at which the next imprints will be made. In 6 other words, the carbon is very slowly advanced or so that the surface may be in effect completely used or worn before being discarded. It will be apparent also that the.

In cases where the work is left in the machine for the entry of many items it will be understood that asa result of frequent line spacing operations and the consequent extended advance of the carbon sheet and rotation of the. carbon. carrier 95, it might be that said carrier would be required to turn through several complete revolutions.
In order to permit of a number of these turning movements and also to limit the number so as to prevent undue winding of the carbon restoring springand other-harm- 'ful results, the stop 120 has been made in the form of a Geneva stop as has been described. Assuming that the parts start from a normal position such as illustrated in Fig. 1 and that the platen is turned to advance the carbon and rotate the carbon 30 carrier, it will beunderstood that as said carrier rotates it will carry with it the pin 119 which will eventually engage with the opening or slot 122, .shown as located at the front side of the stop wheel when the parts are disposed as in Fig. 1. Further turning after such engagement will cause the pin 119 to advance in the slot 122 and press against the left-hand side thereof to turn the stopwheel the cutout 1'19 permitting such turning .movement of the stop 120 without obstruction from the hub. 97. The turning movement of the stop 120 on its own axis, will continue as the pin 119 passesdirectly unp der said axis backward and downward, and
until, as illustrated injFig. 2, said pin starts to leave or disengage 'from the slot 122. Comparing Fig. 2 with Fig. 1 it will be observed that the stop wheel 120 has been in the direction of the arrow, Fig". 2, so as to bring the next succeeding slot 1'23 in the wheel into position to be engaged by thepin ,119 after it has -made another turn with the-carbon roll and asit again approaches the end of its movement, whereupon the operationwill be repeated on'the wheel 120 turned another step through co-operation of the pin 119 and slot 123. It will be further understood from F igs l and 2 .thatthe curved faces '126 inthe stop uwheel successively .permit rotation of the'hub 97 without obstruction from said stop wheel. It will further be understood that at each successive turni of the carbon carrier. the wheel-120 will 120 on its own axis 121,
I of the tally receive a turning movement due to successive engagements of the pin 119 with the slots 122, 123, 124 and 125 so that as the fifth turning movementof the carbon carrier begins, the stop wheel will occupy the position illustrated in Fig. 3 with the closed face 127 in the path of the stop pin 119. Consequently as the carbon carrier approaches the end of its fifth rotation the stop 119 will be brought into contact with the stop face 127 as illustrated in Fig. 3, preventing further rotation of the carbon carrier. However, the several rotations afforded the carbon carrier by the described construction is suflicient to allow for the completion of the writing of the longest work sheet employed in practical work before the stops 119 and 127 will co-operate as in Fig. 3. It will be understood that after the writing has been completed and the carbon paper is released, the backward rotation of the carrier, under the impulse of its rewinding spring 118 will permit the stop pin 119 to co-operate with the slots in the wheel 120 in reverse order, causing a backward or reverse rotation of said,.wheel on its axis until it is restored to normal position or with the stop face in position to arrest the stop pin 119 at the completion of the rewinding movement. The stop 120 it will be observed is in efi'eclna planet stop, its motion of rotation on its own axis 121 through oo-operation of the pin 119 with the slots in said planetary stop as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, being distinct from the bodily revolution of said planetary stop about the axis 101 as illustrated in y throwing out the detent tooth 154 temporarily the carbon carrier 95 will be itfreed so that it may be readily rotated by the finger wheel 102 for the purpose of adjusting the carbon on the carrier 95 by hand movements. I
' There are also provided detent or safety devices for the supply carrier 49 and the take-up carrier 83. As has been described the supply carrier mounts a ratchet wheel 7 (Jo-operative with this ratchet wheel is a pawl, 158 igs. 5 and 7) which-is provided "with ahub159 fitted over the rock shaft 39 and secured thereto bya set screw 160. The pawl extends upward and rearward from the rock shaft and'isseparated from the ratchet wheel 73. However,- when the rock shaft 39 'is actuated during the feed roll re leasing operation the pawl 158 is swung au-, tomatically into engagement with the ratchet wheel 73 so as to prevent unwinding strip 78 from the delivery roll. This device is especially useful when sheets are inserted from the fear or withdrawn from the front, as such sheets are liable to accidentally feed or advance thetal strip through frictional engagement f therewith.
This is particularly true when a wide record sheet is retained in the machine by margin feed rollers as in some Remington billing machines. The automatically operated detent devices 73, 158 hold the roll carrier and thus prevent such accidental feeding. Further there is provided a gravity pawl (Figs. 1 and 5) said pawl being in the form of a curved member 161 pivoted at 162 to the inner face of the left-hand frame plate 42. Said pawl is provided with a tooth 163 which normally engages with the teeth 01 the ratchet wheel 87 so as to prevent backward rotation of the receiving carrier 83. The tooth portion 163 of the pawl member 161 extends down back of the pivot as shown in Fig. 1. Forward of the pivot the pawl member 161 is provided with a downwardly extending horn or finger portion 164 which may be pushed against and held when it is desired to, free the carrier from its detent device or pawl tooth 163 so as to free said carrier for rotation in a direction to permit the paper to be withdrawn, usually when it is to be severed and removed from the machine after having been written on.
" IVhen it is desired to readjust the tally carrying sub-frame 42, 43 along its supporting rod from right to left it is necessary to loosen the screw 160 as well as'the screws 140 as a preliminary. The two screws 140' must also be loosened prior to resetting or readjusting the cont-rivance on its support in a rightward direction, and it is desirable if not strictly necessary that the screw 160 be also loosened at this time. It will be observed that the resetting of the tally contrivance proper on its supporting frame may be readily and quickly effected since .it involves only the loosening of three screws to enable this to be accomplished.
Various changes maybe made without departing from the spirit and scope ofmy invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a platen, a tally cont-rivance proper, and a support therefor comprising a pair of brackets pivotally supported on the carriage and a tie rod connecting said brackets, said support maintaining said tally contrivance at rest against the platen.
2. In a typewriting. machine, the com-- bination of a platen carriage, a platen, a tally contrivance proper, a support therefor comprising a pair of brackets pivotally supported on the carriage, and a tie rod connecting said brackets, and spring means tending constantly to maintain said tally contrivance in co-operation with the platen.
3.. In atypewTit-ing machine, the com bination of a platen carriage, a platen, a tally contrivance proper, a support therefor connected to one of said brackets.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a platen, a tally contrivance proper, a support therefor comprising a pair of. brackets pivot-ally supported on the carriage, and a tie rod con-. necting said brackets and supporting said tally contrivance, a pair of coiled draw springs anchored to the carriage and each connected to one of said brackets, and friction rollers on said tally contrivance and which are maintained in frictional engagement with the platen by said draw springs.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a platen, a tally carrying contrivance proper, a pair of friction rollers. and a support for said contriv-' ance comprising a. pair of angular members spaced apart and rigidly connected by a tie rod, said support being pivoted to the carriage, said contrivance being adjustably mounted lengthwise of said tie rod, said friction rollers operatively engaging with the platen so as to receive rotary movements therefrom.
6. -In a typewriting machine, the combina tion of a platen carriage, a platen shiftable to change case, feed rollers extending along the platen, a tally carrying contrivance proper, and a support for said contrivanc'e comprising a pair of angular members spaced apart and rigidly connected by a tie rod, said support being pivoted to the carriage and shiftable with the platen, a second rod or bar mounted on said support, said. contrivance being adj ustably mounted lengthwise of said tie rod and said second rod or bar, said friction rollers operativelyengaging with the platen so as to receive rotary movements therefrom in both shift positions of the platen.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a traveling platen carriage comprising a truck and a platen frame, said platen frame and platen being shiftable on said truck to change case, feed rollers extending along the platen, a tally contrivance proper having. parts engaging wit-h said Hit) platen, and a. support for said contrivance,"
said support being connected to said truck for affording shifting movements of said contrivance during case shifting movements of said platen and platen frame, said contrivance being adjustable lengthwise of said platen and its feed rollers. l
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a traveling platen carriage comprising a truck and a platen frame, said platen frame and platen being shiftable on said truck to change case, feed rollers extending along the platen, a tally contrivance proper having parts engaging with said platen, a support for said contrivance along which it is adjustable, said support comprising a pair of brackets spaced apart and connected by a tie rod on which said contrivance is adjustable lengthwise of the platen, said brackets being pivotally connected to said truck, and spring means on said carriage and connected tosaid truck, saidspring means constantly urging said contrivance towards the platen.
9. In a front strike typewriting machine,
the combination of a platen carriage comprising a truck and a platen frame, a platen, said truck comprising front and rear bars between which said platen and said platen frame are arranged, the platen and platen frame being shiftable to change case, feed rollers extending along the platen, a tally contrivance proper that constantly rests on top of the platen, and a swinging support for said contrivance, said support comprising side brackets which are pivoted to the front part of said truck and extend rearward therefrom being connected by a tie rod extending lengthwise of and over the platen and whereon said contrivance is slidably supported.
10. In a front strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage comprising a truck and a platen frame, said truck comprising front and rear bars between which said platen and said platen frame are arranged, the platen and platen frame being shiftable to change case, feed rollers extending along the platen, a tally contrivance proper that constantly rests on top of the platen, a swinging support for said contrivance, said support comprising side brackets which are pivoted to the front part of said truck and extend rearward therefrom being connected by a tie rod extending lengthwise of and over the platen and whereon said contrivanee is slidably supported, and coiled springs, one for each bracket, said coiled springs being anchored to the carriage and tending constantly to pull said support down toward the top of the platen and to maintain said contrivance in contact with said platen.
11. In a front strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; a platen carriage comprising a truck and a platen frame, said truck comprising front and rear bars between which said platen and said platen frame are arranged, the platen and platen frame being shiftable to change case; feed rollers extending along the platen; a tally carrying contrivance proper that rests resiliently on top of the platen and comprises upright side frames and a connecting hollow rod or sleeve; a swinging support for said contrivance, said support comprising side brackets which are pivoted to the front of said truck and extend rearward therefrom, and a tie rod connecting said brackets and extending lengthwise of and over the-platen, said sleeve being slidably supported on said tie rod; and spring means tending constantly to pull said support downward toward the top of the platen and to maintain said contrivance contactive with said platen.
12. In a front strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; a platen carriage comprising a truck and a platen frame,-
said truck comprising front and rear bars between which said platen and'said platen frame are arranged, the platen and platen frame being shiftable to change ease; feed rollers extending along the platen; a tally carrying contrivance proper that constantly rests on top of the platen and comprises upright side frames, a connecting hollow rod or sleeve and friction rollers loose on said sleeve; a support for said contrivance pivotally connected to said truck and comprising side members and a connecting tie rod passing through said sleeve; and spring means effective 011 said swinging support to maintain said friction rollers in contactive engagement with the top of the platen.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of platen carriage, a platen thereon, a tally carrying contrivance, and means for maintaining said contrivance in resilient engagement with said platen.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling platen carriage, a platen thereon, a-support on said carriage, a tally cont-rivance proper mounted on said support and carrying a tally strip, and means acting through said supportto maintain said contrivance in resilient contact with the platen.
15. In a typcwriting machine, the combination of a traveling platen carriage, a platen thereon, a support on said carriage, a tally contrivanee proper mounted on said support, means for affording adjustmentof said eontrivance on its support lengthwise of said platen, and spring devices acting through said support to maintain said contrivance in all its adjusted positions in resilient engagement with said platen.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling carriage comprising a truck and a platen frame, a platen on said frame, said platen and platen frame being shi'l'tahle on said truck to change case, a support on said truck, a tally contrivance proper on said support, and spring means acting through said support to maintain said contrivance in resilient engagement with said platen in both of its shift positions.
' 17. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a feed roller device extending lengthwise thereof, and a tally strip carrying contrivanoe adjustable lengthwise Hill;

19. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen thereon, a
feed roller extending len thwise of said platen, a sub-frame on said carriage, a carrier for a tally strip mounted on said subframe, and means for affording adjustment of said sub-frame on said carriage so that said tally strip as a whole may be adjusted with the sub-frame and in constant relationship herewith and may be brought into cooperation with the platen and its feed roller at any desired position lengthwise of the platen.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen thereon, a feed roller extending lengthwise of said platen, a sub-frame on said carriage, a car.- rier for a tally strip mounted on said subframe, friction rollers carried by said subframe, means for affording'adjustment of said sub-frame on said carriage so that said tally strip may be caused to co-operate with the platen and its feed roller at any desired position lengthwise of the platen, and spring means for maintaining said friction rollers in resilient engagement with said platen in all of its adjustedpositions.
21. Ir. a typewriting machine,-the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, a supporting device on the carriage and comprlsing a rod extending lengthwise of said platen, a sub-frame comprising plates and a sleeve rigid therewith and slidable on said rod, and carriers for a tally strip and for carbon paper mounted on said sub-frame, said sub-frame being yieldingly supported on the platen and adjustable along sald rod lengthwise of said platen.
22. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, a supporting device on the carriage and compr sing a tie rod extending lengthwise of said platen, a sub-frame comprising vertically disposed plates and a sleeve rigid therewith and slidable on said tie rod, car riers for delivering and takingup a tally strip, and frictional connections between said platen and the .carrier on which the tally strip is taken up, said connections being mounted on said sleeve.
23. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, a supporting device on the carriage and comprising a rod, a sub-frame comprising plates and a sleeve rigid therewith and slidable on said rod, carriers for delivering and taking up a tally strip, a carbon carrier, said carriers being mounted on said sub-frame, and friction rollers on said sleeve coactin both with said platen and with said ta re-up carrier.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, a supporting device on the carriage and comprising a rod, a sub-frame comprising lates and a sleeve rigid therewith and slidable on said rod, carriers for delivering and receiving a, tally strip, friction rollers on said sleeve co-acting both with said platen and with said take up carrier, spring means connected with said supporting device and assisting to maintain said rollers in operative contact with the platen, and separate spring means for maintaining said friction rollers and said take-up carrier in operative contact. 4

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, a supporting device on the carriage and comprising a tie rod, a sub-frame comprisin plates and a sleeve rigid therewith and sli able on said tie rod, a rotary take-up carrier for a tally stripmounted on said sub-frame, friction rollers'rotatable on said sleeve, spring means on said supporting device to press said friction rollers towards the platen, and spring means on said take-up carrier to press said carrier towards said friction rollers. 1

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a platen, a subframe for a tally strip mounted on said carriage, a rotary carrier for taking up the tally strip mounted on said sub-frame, resilient connections independent of the tally strip between said platen and said carrier, and releasable devices for normally preventing the unwinding of the tally strip from said take-up carrier.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a platen, a sub-frame for a tally strip mounted on said carriage, rotary carriers for delivering and taking up the tally strip mounted on said sub-frame, and devices co-operative with the platen for unwinding the paper from one carrier and winding it on the other carrier when the platen is turned.

In -a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, paper feeding devices co-operative with said platen, a tally strip mechanism comprising rotary carriers for delivering a tally strip to the platen and taking it up after it has been written on and leaves the platen, devices for actuating both of said carriers automatically during platen turning movements.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a platen, releasable paper feeding devices co-operative with said platen, tally strip mechanism comprising a frame, a tally delivery carrier on said frame, said carrier being provided with a ratchet wheel, a tally receiving carrier on said frame and provided with a ratchet wheel, a detent pawl mounted on said frame and normally co-operating with the ratchet wheel of said receiving carrier, and a detent pawl for co-operating with the ratchet wheel of said delivery carrier but normally ineffective, said last recited pawl becoming automatically effective when said paper feeding devices are released.

In tally strip mechanism for a typewriting machine, the combination of a rotary tally strip carrier, means for turning said carrier to feed the tally strip, and brake devices for said carrier to prevent overthrow thereof, .said brake devices comprising a grooved. wheel connected with said carrier and a coiled brake spring .engaging with said grooved wheel.

In tally strip mechanism for a typewriting machine, the combination of a r0- tary tallystrip carrier, means for turning said carrier to feed the tally strip, and brake devices for said carrier to prevent overthrow thereof, sa1d brake devices comprising a grooved wheel connected, with said carrier and a coiled spring engaging with said grooved wheel, and partly surrounding the same, the ends of said coiled spring being secured against movement.-

a rotary carrier mounted on said frame and rovided with a spring mounted axle pin earing in one of said end plates, said pin being movable endwise to disengage from said end plate so as to permit the carrier opposite end portion of said carrier, said key being rotatable by hand to turn the carrier but being disconnectible at will from said carrier. 7
