Description

March v25,, 1924. 1,488,012
J. S. LITTLE CLIP FOR SHIRT COLLARS Filed April 17. 1922 Patented Mar. 25, 11924 1.
UNHED CLIP FOR, SHIRT COLLARS.
Application filed April 17, 1922.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES SIMCOE LITTLE, a subject of the King 01" Great Britain, residing at WVindsor, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Connected with Clips for Shirt Collars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates tomeans used for holding the loose ends or lapels of shirt collars which are sometimes retained by tapes, safety pins or other devices.
According to this invention, I provide a cylinder, that can be ornamented if desired, with each end closed. At one end of the cylinder I attach a wire that is fitted on its extremity with a hook or knob and through an opening in the other end of the cylinder I pass the shank of a second wire hook.
' Within the barrel and surrounding the body of the second wire is a compression spring that is compressed when the hooked wire is drawn out of the barrel.
In order to prevent the loose wire from turning in its support, the opening in the cylinder end is made rectangular and the shank of the wire, where it passes into and out of the cylinder, is formed to correspond, in say, oblong cross section In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 shows a well-known form of open spring clip and upon which my clip is an improvement.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of my improved clip.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my i vention.
Figure 4 is a transverse section on line 44 of Figure 2.
The wires 4 are finished at the outer ends with a hook or knob for engaging the fabric Serial No. 553,803.
or a hole in the collar. Cne or" the wires 4: is attached to the barrel or cylinder 7 while the other wire, which. is longer, will pass well into the other end of the cylinder and be surrounded by the coin ression spring 6. Means are upon the end of the longer wire to retain and seat one end of the spring, the other end of the spring hearing at the same time upon the end oi the cylinder.
So that the movable wire shall not turn in the cylinder opening, I ma \LG the opening rectangular and form the shank of the wire 4 to correspond. Thus, the lined and mov able hooks wiil always point the one way and this will facilitate the lining of the clip in the collar or material.
In operation, the movable hook is, preferably, first inserted in the collar clip being held at the opposite end. properly hooked at the tree end tl e clip is pulled to extend the distance between the hooks, the spring 6 at the same time being compr ssed. I the fixed hook has been inserted, the clip can b i en the reaction 01? the spring will draw the hooks further into engageinert and hold the same securely in position in the collar.
Having now described my invention what I claim new and desire to see re by Let ters Patent is A clip of the kind ind cated, con'inris ing a barrel havii rectangular openin in one end, a hook lined in the other en thereof, a spindle entering the barrel through and fitting in said opening, a hook on the outer end of the spindle and a compression spring about the spindle in l s In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
