Description

C. STUFFER 8L L. MASTEN.
Flat-Iron Heaters.
JUIL/18,777' Patented M`arch7.1874.
UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM C. STOUFFER AND LANDON MASTEN, OF GANFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT'IN FLAT-IRON HEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0.'14S,777, dated March 17, 1874; application tiled July 12, 1873.
specification and to the letters and ligures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is are-presentation of a sectional view of our sad-iron heater. Fig. 2 is a top view of our heater.
This invention has relation to means for eoonomizing'time and fuel in heating sad-irons and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a slotted shell or heating jacket, made of cast-iron or other suitable metal, and provided with a hinged door or gate, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates an ordinary sad-iron. B indicates the shell or heating-jacket, conforming in its general shape to the base of the sad-iron, which it is designed to inclose. This shell is slotted longitudinally and centrally from the rear edge of its upper plate, as at c, to permit the free passage ofthe handle of the sad-iron, when it is slipped into the shell, through the opening in the rear, atd. E indicates the gate or door, usually hinged at one side of the opening d, and provided with a horizontal ange, e, extending from its upper edge over the top of the shell, in such a manner that when the door is closed, this flan ge will cover that portion of the slot c which lies behind the rear branch of the handle of the sad-iron. Corresponding perforations are made through the flange c and the top of the shell for the reception of a fastening-pin, z.
By the use ot' this shell a sadiron can be heated in any kind of a' ire and kept clean. Further, the shell will keep the hot air about the sad-iron, and prevent the access of cooler' air thereto, in consequence of which the iron will become heated in much less time to the proper degree than if uncovered, and less fuel will be required to produce the amount of heat needed for preparing the iron for use.
We disclaim the devices shown in the patent granted to D. Utley, July 30, 1867--viz., acylindrical case for receiving a number ot sadirons and closed by a series of curved slides.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The portable metallic sad-iron shell B, conformed to the shape of the sad-iron and provided with a hinged door, E, and key-pin z, for securing said door, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
HIRAM C. STOUFFER. LANDON MASTEN.
