Be it known that I, Ronnnr CHARLES Annals, subject of the King of Great Brit ain, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lincoln, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rotary apparatus for duplicating autographic or typewritten matter by meansof a stencil and for printing from type or electros by ink or carbon ribbon and for ruling, scoring, perforating and numbering and ink distributing and comprises means whereby any of these operations may be performed in a simple and effectual manner.
According to this invention, the machine embodies a rotary carrier or supporting frame in which is mounted a series of rotary members for stencilling, printing, numbering, ruling, scoring, perforating, ink distributing, or other like purpose, any two or more of which may be associated in a single machine whereby said members are swingably interchangeable or are adapted to be swung into the operative position through the rotary movement of the carrier or supporting frame.
The invention is described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which the same reference letters indicate the same parts throughout.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the machine in which the rotary carrier or supporting frame is positioned to bring the stencil carrying drums in the operative position and an upper drum for printing or other purpose in the upper inoperative position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view in part sectionon linew. w. of Fig. & in which the rotary carrier or supporting frame has been swung round through 180' degrees, bringing the drum for printing or other purpose into the lower operative position.

In a practical embodiment of my invention, the apparatus comprises standards 1 in which is rotatably mounted a carrier or supporting frame 2 upon an axle '3 fixed in the standards. Astencil drum 4 is rotatably mounted upon the axle 3 and is .conneoted by a band 5 with a stencil drum "6 which is rotatably mounted on a spindle 7 fitted in the frame 2. In Fig. 1 the stencil drums 4: and 6 are shown in the operative position and are adapted toreceive a stencil sheet 8. A printing drum 9 is rotatably mounted on a spindle 10 fixed in the frame 2 and is shown in Fig. 1 in the inoperative position. Ink waver rollers 11 (shown partly in section for clearness to other parts) are introduced between the stencil drums 4 and 6 and also inking rollers '11 between the middle stencil drum l and the printing drum 9 when the latter is in the v I gaging at one side a smaller pinion 13 made fast on the boss of the drum & and at the other side a reduced pinion 14 fast .on the boss of the stencil-carrying drum 6 whereby there is obtained a 5 to 3 gear. The drum 9 is driven by pinions of uniform diameter to give a 1 to 1 gear and these comprise in mounting within the carrier or supporting frame 2 a driving pinion 15 meshing with a pinion 16 on the boss of the drum '9 and with a pinion 17 fast on the boss of the drum 4:.
I The drums are actuated through an operating handle 18 provided with a splined shank 19 adapted to pass through one of the standards into engagement with either the pinion 12 or the pinion 15 to drive respectively the stencil drums or the printing drum whichever is in the operative position. In the position shown in Fig. 1 the handle shank is engaging the pinion 12 and consequently driving the stencil drums 4 and 6 while in Fig. 2 the rotary carrier or supporting frame 2 has been swung round through 180 degrees bringing the printing drum in the operative position and the boss of the pinion coincident with the handle shank 19 which is consequently brought into engagement with the said pinion. The stencil sheet 8 has been detached and inking rollers 11 introduced between the stencil drum 4 and the printing drum 9.
A bed or impression roller 20 is supported by brackets 21 carried from a rod 22 mounted in the side standards 1. Upon the boss of the printing drum 9 is a pinion 23 and as shown in Fig. 2 when the printing drum is in the operative position it engages a pinion 24 mounted on the spindle 20 of the impression roller 20 which is thereby rotated. hen the stencil drums are rotated into the operative position a smaller impression roller than that shown may be employed, such impression roller being driven by frictional contact with the stencil drum 6.
The feed rollers 25 and 26 through which the Sheets are fed are driven through a pinion 27 mounted in the standard 1 on the handle shank 19, said pinion 27 engaging a pinion 28 meshing with an intermediate pinion 29 which in turn gears with a pinion 30. on the shaft of the upper roller 25, the 7 lower feed roller 26 being driven by a pinion 31.
For locking the rotary carrier or supporting frame 2 in position, on the side in proximity with the gear is a spindle 32 turning in brackets 33 provided on the outside of the standard 1, said spindle being fitted with arms 34 and a handle 35 whereby the arms can be swung forward to embrace the rotary carrier or supporting frame 2 at each side thereof. At the opposite side of the machine the locking device comprises a spindle 32 turning in brackets 33 on the standards 1 and fitted centrally with an arm 34 opposite which a slot 36 is formed in the standard 1. In the adjacent rotary carrier or supporting frame 2 are slots 37 and 38 which can be brought coincident alternatively with the slot 36 in the standard 1 the rotary carrier or supporting frame 2 is turned into the upright position. As shown in Fig. 7 the rotary carrier or supporting frame 2 at the side remote from the gear is formed with a contracted limb 2 carrying the printing drum 9 whereby the cylinder 9 carrying the type can be slid off laterally from the said drum by bringing its gapped part in register with the contracted limb 2 of the said rotary carrier or supporting frame, and the type or stereo cylinder interchanged with cylinders for numbering, ruling, scoring, perforating or other like purp ose.
For increasing or decreasing the head space there is formed with or connected to the pinion 27 a dial 39 having peripheral serrations or teeth engaging with which is an internally toothed member 40 on the handle shank 19 whereby a relative rotary adjustment can be effected between the feed rollers 25 and 26 and the stencilling or printing drums.
*With the machine in the position shown in Fig. 1, the handle shank 19 is engaging the boss of the driving pinion 12 and through its connected gear rotating the stencil drums 4: and 6. To bring the drum for printing or other purpose into the operative position, the stencil sheet 8 is first removed, thereby enabling the stencil drums to be used as inking drums, the handle shank 19 is disengaged by withdrawal from the pinion 12 and the rotary carrier or supporting frame 2 swung round whereupon the boss of the pinion 15 is brought in axial alignment with the handle shank 19 which is then thrust into engagement with the said pinion.
In the rotary carrier or supporting frame 2 as shown in Fig. 8 are mounted a central drum and four radially centred outer drums, the central drum 4& and the drum 6 being for holding a stencil sheet while the drums 9, 9, 9 may be employed for printing, numbering, ruling, scoring, perforating or other like purposes.
It will be obvious that any suitable number of drums could be employed by designing the carrier accordingly. Moreover, it is not essential that the stencil-carrying drums should always be employed, as they may be used simply as inking drums and the carrier arranged to carry drums for numbering, perforating, or other purposes as will be understood.
Vfhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Duplicating apparatus comprising, a stationary support, a drum carrier rotatably mounted in said support, a middle drum rotatably mounted on the drum carrier axle, a series of printing drums radially centered about the middle drum and rotatably mounted in the carrier, and inking rollers bearing between the middle drum and the outer printing drums, and an impression roller with which said printing drums selectively engage.
2. Duplicating apparatus comprising, a stationary support, a drum carrier rotatable upon a middle drum axle journaled in the stationary support, a middle drum mounted on said axle, printing drums rotatably mounted in said drum carrier, on opposite sides of said middle drum and rotatable about said middle drum by rotation of said carrier and a stencil sheet carried by said middle drum and one of said printing drums.
3. Duplicating apparatus comprising, a stationary support, end drum carriers mounted in said support, a drum carrier axle mounted in said end drum carriers, a middle roller rotatably mounted on the drum carrier axle, a series of printing drums rotatably mounted in the drum carrier and adapted to be brought individually into the printing position, inking rollers between the middle drum and the outside drums and having rolling contact therewith, and swinging arms rotatably mounted on the stationary support and adapted to be swung into engagement with the rotary carrier.
4 Duplicating apparatus comprising, a statlonary support, a rotary drum carrier mounted on a central axle journaled in said support, a middle drum rotatably mounted on said central axle, a series of printing drums rotatably journaled about the middle drum, driving pinions ournaled in the drum carrier, a driven pinion in gear with the driving pinions at each side thereof, one of the driven pinions being journaled on the middle drum axle and the other pinion upon an outer drum axle, and an operating handle selectively engaging said driving pinions.
5. Duplicating apparatus comprising, a stationary support, a drum carrier rotatably mounted on a middle drum axle journaled therein, a middle drum mounted 011 said axle, printing drums rotatably centered about the middle drum, feed rollers mounted in the stationary support, gear connections between said drums and feed rollers, a serrated dial integral with one of said gears, an operating handle extending through said dial, an internally toothed member on the handle engaging said serrated dial, said gear being alined with the driving gear of each printing drum selectively and spaced therefrom so that the handle may be with drawn from the gear of the printing drum while remaining engaged with the driving gear of said feed rollers.
6. Duplicating apparatus comprising, a stationary support, a carrier axle mounted in said support, a carrier mounted on said axle, a printing roll mounted in said carrier, a stencil roll mounted on saidaxle, a second stencil roll mounted in said frame, inking rolls mounted in said frame and cooperating with said stencil rolls, feed rollers mounted in said frame, a train of gears for operating all of said rolls, an impression roll mounted in said stationary frame, said carrier being rotatable to bring the printing roll or a stencil roll into operative relation to the impression roll, as desired, and means for securing said carrier in either of such positions.
7. Duplicating apparatus comprising, a stationary support, a carrier rotatably mounted therein, a series of rolls in said carrier, and a spindle rotatably mounted on said support and provided with arms extending therefrom and adapted to be swung into position to engage opposite edges of a member of said rotatable carrier to prevent rotation of said carrier in either direction.
