Description

March 18 1924. 1,487,249
w. H. LATIMER WIRE STRETCHE R Filed May 26 1923 Patented Mar. i8, 192%.
"WIRE STREET Ell Application filed May 26,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. LATIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a highly novel and simplified form of Wire stretcher, that is especially adapted for stretching a inultiplicity of strands of wire, constituting a fence.
The primary object of the invention is to provide such a device that is extremely simple of construction and inexpensive oi manufacture, and one that will embrace at the same time, the desired features of efieiency and durability, and one that may be operated with the minimum amount oi energy.
"The nature and advantages oi the invention will be better understood When the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts claimed.
in the drawings forming part of this ap plication, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved Wire stretcher in operation.
Figure 2 is an elevation of one side therelligure 8 is a detail longitudinal cross section of the device, and
Figure lis a transverse cross section taken substantially upon the line 4-501? Figure 1. v I
Referring to the drawings in detail, my improved Wire stretcher constitutes a frame designated generally 5, and consisting of a pair of spaced parallel bar members 6, ioined together at their opposite ends by crossrods 7 and 8, respectively. The front cross rod 7 has slight vertical movement within slots 9 adjacent the front ends of said bars 6, While engaging over the bar 8 is a tube'lO for obvious purposes.
in position upon the frame bars 6 are relatively Wide metallic strips 11, the same 1323. Serial rte. 541,531.
being secured to the bars in any manner Extending through openings in iese strips ll as well as said bars 6 are is opposite ends of a cross shaft 12, Which as keyed thereto a relatively long drum J5, this d n heing provided With a row of oaced. laterally projecting and rearivar ined pins 141.,
'Qne end of the shaft 12 projects a distance outwardly of the adjacent bar 6, and is equipped with a ratchet Wheel 15 as Well as an operating handle 16. Pivoted upon the adjacent strap member 11 and complenientary to the ratchet member 15 is a spring controlled dog 17 that permits of the rotation oi? the shaft 12 and the drum 13 in one direction, but prevents their movement in a reverse direction, unless the same is displaced.
The rear ends of the bars (5 are provided with clevises 18, to which are secured certain ends of wire strands 19, the same being secured together at their opposite ends through the medium of a ring 20, to which is secured one end of chain section 21. As shown in Figure l, the free end of this chain section is equipped with a hook 22, it being understood that this chain is adapted to be around a fence post or like A, and to he there secured by extending the hook 22 through one of the rings constituting said chain section.
The ends of the Wire strands B are formed with loops, these ends of the sections adapt ed to he engaged over the pine is of: the drum 13, whereby when his drum is rotated in a certain direction, the Wire strands B s will be effectively stretched.
In vieu oi the above description, nurnerous advantages of a device of this character Will be readily appreciated those skilled in the art, and although I TiA-VB herein set forth the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made herein, Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: V
In a Wire stretcher of the class described, a frame comprising a pair of spaced parallel bar ineinhers joined together at their opposite ends, metallic strips upon said bars means for anchoring said frame to a stationand having openings therein in alinement My member and means for rotating said with openings in said bars, a shaft jourshaft and consequently said drum for Windnaled Within said openings, a drum keyed ing the Wire strands thereon.
a to said shaft and provided With laterally In testimony whereof I aifix my signaprojecting, spaced pins adapted for receivture.
ing the ends of Wire strands to be stretched, WILLIAM H. LATIMER.
