i COMBINATION RACKVANDBEDR i i i Application filed March 29, 1923. Serial No. e2s-,443.
Tona Zi whom may coment: p I
Be it known that I, R BERT L, ADAMS,
citizen of the -United I States, residing at Los Angeles, in the ;County of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new 'and useful Improvements in 'a Corpbination Rack and Bed, of which the following ,is a specification.` o i u i My presentinvention* being a combina tion rack and bed, adapted for use in ,connection with an'automob'ileor the like, it is a primary object ,of thisinvention to provide means whichshall -be suitable for use during camping trips, summeroutings and the like, in which a convenient accommodationfor luggage is needed during-the day and adequate sleepng' accommodations ar needed during the night. i
V It is an object of this inventiontto means of the .character referred to which shall utilizea running board to; support one end of a cot or bed and to constitutevirtually. an extension or section thereof; :and I prefer to connect my cot. to` ,the 'running board by means which shall be capable of;
serving alternatively. as. legs for the cot, when the sameis tobe used separately from the Vehicle, or as supports for one end` of the cot, or as supports for a luggage rack, which may comprise the end frameof the said cot or bed, `adapted tosupport thevouter or remote end ofthesame'. i 4
It isa further object of this inventionto provide means whereby i a, shelter or ,enclos-i ing canopy mayextend from the bodyof an automobile to cover a cotor bed connected therewth or to cover a. luggagerack formed from an end frame 'of said cot or bed; and novel tensionmeans may be in-` companying drawings, inwhichi Figure `1 is a plan View showing one mode of connecting ahorizontal fra-me with a running board to form a bed.
Fig. 2 is a Vertical section on line 2-2 of Fiaure 1.
Fig. 3 shows how the outer or remote end support or frame of the cot or bed may be employed as a luggage rack and an alternative securing means therefor.
, is an elev ational view the" direction offthe arrow 4. of Figure 3; i
Fig. sis' dema view showinglhow that form of securing meanswhich is disclosed in Figures 3 and& may be alternatively em-w ployed as a legj for theseparable section of thecot. Figs. iand 7 show analternative securing meanshereinafter referred to in which a separable leg, distinct from ;the clamping element is einployed; i v u i Fig. SxhibitsQupon an enlarged scale, a. 'form of tensioningneans which l may alternativ'ely ,employ at lonefendv o f. a cotofmy improved design. 7 g Referring in detail to the( parte of that embodiment of my invention shown in@ Figures 1 and 2, 1 is aseparableisection of a cotor bed, having the side elements 2,. preferably formed of separate sectionszconnected byhinges 3, the mention'ed sideelementsbeing 'connected in any suitable way, as by the iangleirons 4 and at the respec tive endsthereof, andfiany suitablemeans; such as the spring? "6, 'being supportedby the fram'ejso fornied, i
At the inner end ofthe frame 11, any suit-f able, means may beemployedto connect the: samewith the running boardR, or other fixed part of an automobilegoand inthe form of my invnton shown in Figures l .and 2 I p y, for hi purpose, u c stn s ach` provided withapair ;of apertures 8 and9, placed at right anglesto one another, ,the socket8 being in eachcase arranged to extends vertically` and thereby adapted .to ;rea ceive-,the pins ,10 :upon the inner end ofthe frame land thereby support ,the same. ,To
secure the castings 7, to .the running board;` any suitablemeansmay be employed, and for this: purpose have showna subsidary frame consisting ofthe'angle iron extendin: longtudinally of the runnngboard and securedtothe. castings this angle iron being d riveted or otherwise' secured .to. the
arms 12 andthe diagonal braces 13, which are adapted to overlie the top of the running board and to coope-rate with an elongated member 14, which may also be riveted to the casting 7 and which is shown as provided with a set screw'l, adapted to contact with the bottom of the running board, thereby completing a clamp.
In order to make it possible to support the frame 1, by the nsertion of the pins 10 in the alternative sockets 9, and independcntly of the running board, when this is desired, I find it advantageous to make not only the casting 7 but the member 14 sufficiently strong to support one end of the to support the mentioned outer end of the cot by tension means extending to or from the automobile. I find it advantageous to employ supporting means which may have the character of an end frame. 16, which may comprise the legs 17 and the horizontal members 18, the latter being shown as connected by uprights 19; and I prefer to employ simple means, such as the casting 20, provided with sockets 21, to secure the outer end of the cot, provided with engaging means such as the pins 10' thereto.
In order to facilitate the use of the end frame 16 alternatively as the upright element of a luggage carrier, I find it advantageous to form .the lower ends 22 of the legs 17 of such size and shape that they may fit securely within the sockets 8 of the casting 7 or T (Figure 3) or 7 (Figure 6) whenever 'the pins 10 of the frame 1 shall have been lifted 'therefrom, as in the preparation for .breaking of a camp and continuing of a journey. It will be obvious that. when the frame 16 shall have been Secured in the manner described, the remaining parts of the cot and any bedding or other luggage may be retained thereby upon the running board during the continuance of a journey or the return from a camping trip.
In order to provide a shelter to exclude rain or wind or sun, and to provide a degree of privacy, any suitable means may be employed to secure a canopy over a cot of the character described; and for this purpose I have suggested the employment of extensions 22 which may be provided With knobs or with eyes 23, to which I may secure the cords 24 of a canopy 25, or covering of any desired Construction, the upper ends of the cords being optionally Secured to the top or side of the automobile adjacent to which my cot may be used.
Although I have proposed to use --the elongated member 14 of that form of my device which is shown in Figure 2, and the corresponding member 14 of that form which is shown in Figures 3 and 5, as a leg by which one end of the separable portion of my cot may alternatively .be supported when it is not to be connected with the automobile, it should be understood that I may employ alternatively the construction shown in Figures 6 and 7, in which the separable element 14 of wood or other material, suitably shaped and provided with an aperture, may be Secured by the thunb screw 15 and it will be obvious that instead ot securing one end of a cot to the running board, I might alternatively secure one side of a cot thereto in such manner that the area of aarunning board, or a part thereof` shall Supplement the area of a removable section of a cot and complete the same.
As illustrated in Figure 8, instead of permanently securing both of the end elements 4 and 5 to the side pieces 2 of a horizontal cot frame, I may adapt one or both oi" the end elements 4, 5 to move relatively thereto. For example, I may provide the fixed horizontal element 18 of a bed end frame with the fixed eyes or hooks whose swaged securing heads appear also at 26 in Figure 4, and I may also provide, upon the movable horizontal element 5? to which one end of the spring 6 is Secured, the links 27, securing to these the lever-links 28 provided with hooked ends 29 adapted to engage the links 27, and 28, so connected that movements of the character indicated in dotted lines shall tension the spring 6 or any equivalent horizontal support.
While I have described above one preferred embodiment and various alternative embodiments of my invention, it will be understood that parts t-hereof might be independently employed, and that various further modifications might be made without departure from the spirit and scope thereof, as the same are indicated by the foregoing description and the following claims. i
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a cot frame, and means for' securing said frame to a running board, said securing means being provided with a plurality of sockets for alternative use.
2. In combination, a cot frame and means for securingsaid frame to a running board, said securing means being provided with a plurality of sockets for alternative use and arranged at right angles one to another.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification. V
ROBERT L. ADAMS.
