State of liennsylvania, have invent certain new and useful Improvements in Blast Furnaces, of which` the following is a speciiication.

Thel principal object of the present invention is to provide means Asupported on the bleeder pipes of the furnace for supporting Vthe charging bells and bell operating mechanism, thereby eliminating the necessity of building a separate supporting structure above the furnace for vthese parts. l
The advantages of the present construction will be' readily'appreciated by those skilled in the art. For instance, the weight of the structure supported on the topof the furnacel is greatly reduced, and the cost of building a separate supporting structure is avoided. Y p

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates the lupper end of the blast furnace stack provided withthe usual opening in which is mounted a ixed hopper 3, which has its lower or bottom opening controlled by a-bell 4, while the upper portion is closed by a frusto-conical cap 5 upon which is mounteds a, receptacle or small, straight sided hopper 6. The lower end of the hopper 6 is controlled by a normally closed bell 7 A chute or hopper 8 is mounted above the hopper 6 and is adapted to receive the material to be charged in the furnace from the skip hoists or other elevating means (not shown). .In the construction shown, four bleeder lpes 9 are used, which extend upwardly rom the furnace at diametrically opposite that they define the corners of a rectangle.
The'bleeder pipes 9 are tied together so as'to prevent outward displacement by four pairs of girders 14, 1,5, 16 and 17, respectively. The girders 14, 15, 16' and 17 are secured to brackets 14a, 15a, `16a and 17, respectively, which are riveted or otherwise` secured to the bleeder 'pipes' 9.
` The girders 16 and 17 extend atA rightl angles to, and have their bottom faces on taken bythe members 12 and a lineA withthe top faces of the girders 14 p and 15.
The girders 16 and 17 have a widened or dropped portion intermediate their ends forming feet 18 which support the ends of a pair of girders 18a which extend parallel to the girders 14 and 15.
The bell 7' .'s suspended from tubular member 19 which hasits upper end pivotally `connected to one end of a counterweighted operating lever 20 pivoted intermediate its ends on a bracket 21ymounted on the girders 25. A y
The bell 4 is suspended from a rod 22 which extends upwardly through and above the tubular member 19 and has its upper i end pivotally connected to one end of a counterweighted operating lever 23 which is pivoted intermediate its `ends on a bracket 24 mounted on girders 18u.
The girders 25 have their end portions exl tended downwardly forming feet 25B, which engage and are secured to the upper faces of the girders 16 and 17.
The counterweighted levers 2OV and 23 are provided with operating cables 27 and 28, respectively, which are trained over suitable sheaves 29, which are journaled on the skip bridge 30, the upper part of which is shown in Figure 1, and extend to a suitable prime mover (notshown). The cables 27 and 28 are adapted to positively` raise the counterweighted ends of levers 2O and 23 to having a plurality of bleeder pipes extendlower the bells and et, respectively, when charging the furnace. f
The upper ends of the bleeder pipes 9. are
`tied together by beams 31 and truss braces 32. Suitable flooring (not shown) may be supported on the beams 31, if desired to form a platform upon which workmen may stand when inspecting or repairing the relief valves on the top of thebleeder pipes 9.
'lhe charging ap aratus described in the foregoing specification is of the well known McKee type and its operation is well known to those skilled in the art.
The novelty ofthe present invention lies in supporting the charging bells and their operating mechanism on the bleeder pipes of a blast furnace, thereby eliminating the necessity of building a separate supporting structure for these parts.
1. The combination with a blast furnace having a' plurality of -bleeder pipes eX- tending upwardly therefrom, a charging hopper and bell, of girder members arranged transversely of and secured to said bleeder pipes, and means for supporting and operating said bell mounted on' said girders.
2. The combination with a blast furnace ing upwardly therefrom, and a charging hopper and bell, of transverse girder memigeaoae bers arranged between and secured to said bleeder pipes, means for reinforcing said bleeder pipes vertically, and means mounted n ing upwardly therefrom, and a charging hopper and bell, of transverse girder mem- 'bers arranged between and secured to said bleeder pipes, vertical reinforcing members secured to said bleeder pipes, -and means mounted on said transverse girder members for supporting and operating said bell.
4. The combination with a blast furnace having a pluralityofgbleeder pipes extending upwardly therefrom, and a charging hopper and charging bells, of transverse girder lnembers arranged between and secured to said bleeder pipes, vertical reinforcing means secured to said bleeder pipes and said furnace shell, counterweighted supporting and operating levers for said bells, and means mounted 0n 'said transverse girders having a plurality of bleeder pipes extendfor supporting said levers, whereby said f bells and their operating levers are wholly supported through said girders lby said bleeder pipes.
