G. W. LEWIS IRONING TABLE Filed March 5. 1921 Patented Mar. 135, 1324i.
GEORGE W'. LEV/"IS, OF XVESTBDRO, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGI I MEETS, TO 3. F. BTCKNELL LUMBER COMPANY, OF WORCESTER,MASSACHUSETTS,
A CORPORATION OF. MASSACHUSETTS.
130mm TABLE.
Annlication filed March 5, 1921. Serial No. 449,980.
To all whom it may 00mm;
Be it known that I, GEORGE "W. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at livestboro, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Ironing Table, of which the following is 'a specification.
This invention relates to an ironing table of the folding type. It is the object of my invention to provide a certain novel construc-' tion in a folding ironing table by which a firm and rigid working surface is'attained and in which no catches, hooks or other fastening devices are required.
With this general object in view my improved ironing table in the preferred form comprises a rame hinged to an ironing board and engaging the floor at two laterally separated points, a brace also hinged to the board and engaging the floor at a single point widely separated from the feet of the frame, and certain additional parts to be described by which the board is firmly supported and by which the frame and brace are held in operative relation. I thus provide a three point support for an ironing table which readily adapts itself to an uneven floor surface.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of my invention is shown in the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved ironing table;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the table when folded, and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the table when partly folded.
Referring to the drawings, my improved table comprises a top or board 10 of the usual outline which may be provided with one or more cross bars 11 for strengthening the board. A. frame 12 is pivotally connected to the board 10 by hinges 13 near the center of the table.
The frame 12 comprises two side members 14 and 15 which are rigidly connected together by cross bars 16 and 17 and by diagonal braces 18. The braces 18 are framed together at the center and are provided with a notch 19 (Fig. 2) which acts as a guide way for-a brace 20 which is hinged at 21 to the board 10 near one end thereof.
A shoulder isforined on the lower edge of the brace 20 in any convenient-manner, preferably by securing a block 22 to the edge of the brace. When the parts are in operative or supporting position the block 22 engages the cross braces 13 as shown in Fig. 1.
A lever 23, preferably formed of two parallel bars, is connected to the board 10 by hinges 24. The bars extend on each side of the brace 20 and'are connected by a cross pin or bolt 25 which extends through a long slot 26 in the brace 20, engaging the upper end of the slot when the parts are in operative position as shown in'Fig. 1. The lower end of the lever 23 is connected by links 27 to the frame 12, the links being pivoted at 28 to the lower end of the lever 23 and being hinged at 29 to the cross bar 16.
Having described the details of construc tion of my improved ironing table, the operation and advantages thereof are readily understood. When the table is in use, the board is supported upon the two side members 14 and 15 and upon the brace 20, thus engaging the floor at three points only so that the table readily adapts itself to an uneven surface. The center of the table is directlysupported by the frame 12. The right hand end of the table (as viewed in Fig. 1') is supported by the brace 20 and the left hand end of the table is supported by the lever 23.
The upper end of the brace 20 with its block or shoulder 22 transfers pressure from, the right hand end of the table to the frame 12 while the lever 23 transfers pressure from the left hand end of the table through the pin 25 to'the brace 20. The link connection between the lever 23 and the frame 12 and the lost motion connection between the lever 23 and the brace 20 maintain the parts always in a definite and prearranged relation whether folded or open, and making it unnecessary to pay any attention whatever to the movement of the parts when either opening or folding the table.
A table thus constructed possesses great supporting strength and is, in fact, capable of supporting several hundred pounds weight on any part of the board.
Having thus described my invention itwill be evident that changes and modifications can be made therein by those skilled in the art within thespirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the claims and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed but what I claim is z 1. A folding ironing table having, in combination, a board, a frame pivoted thereto at an intermediate point in the length of the table and comprising spaced connected side members, a brace pivoted to said table near one end thereof and extending rearward through said frame, the other end of said brace engaging the floor when in operative position and forming with said frame a three-point support for said table, said brace engaging said frame and bein supported thereby between its ends when 1n operative position, a lever pivoted to said board near the center thereof and having a sliding connection to said brace, and a link connecting said lever to said frame and effective to cause said frame, brace and lever to move in unison as a connected structure to open or folded position by a simple continuous movement.
2. A folding ironing table having, in combination, a board, a frame pivoted thereto at an intermediate point in the length of the table and comprising spaced connected side members, a brace pivoted to said table near one end thereof and extending rearward through said frame, the other end of said brace engaging the floor when in operative position and forming with said frame a three-point support for said table, said brace engaging said frame and being supported thereby between its ends when in operative position and said brace and frame having co-operating abutments below said brace also engaged when said brace is in operative position, a lever pivoted to said board near the center thereof and having a sliding connection to said brace, and a link connecting said lever to said frame and effective to cause said frame, brace and lever to move in unison as a connected structure to open or folded position by a simple continuous movement.
Intestimony whereof I have hereunto afiixed my signature.
GEORGE W. LEWIS.
