Be it known that I, CURTIS E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, .have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Saws, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to devices for sawing materials such as wood, and is more particularly directed to an adjustable bed for supporting the materials in a number of positions.
An object of this invention is to Aprovide an adjustable bed for supportingmaterial to be sawed in a number of diil'erent adjustable positions, whereby any cut of the material desired may be had, the adjustment being such that the material may be provided with a longitudinal groove, thus forming a 2o cut without entirely ripping` through the thickness of the material.'
Another object of the invention is the provision of a mitre gage in connection with the adjustable bed whereby different kinds of mitreV joints may be ha With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

In order to provide awider range` of usefulness, 'and for the convenience in the operation of my saw described and claimed in my application iiled May 17, 1921 Serial No.
470,333, onwhich Patent No. 1,450,459 was granted April 3, 1923, of which the present application is a division, I have provided the r bed of my saw casing 1 with a bed plate 2 pivotally connected at one end to the casing by means of two studs 14 projecting from the side of the casing and engaging in slots 14a in side members 15 as shown in Fig. 2. These side members extend from the underside of the bed plate and in spaced relation to each other, and are adapted to engage the sides of the casing to hold the bed plate in position. Nuts 18 engage the threaded ends of the studs 14 for locking one end of the side members 15 in position. In the end-of each of the side members 15 opposite to the slots 14- are slotsl adapted to receive bolts 17 fastened in the side of the casing having on their ends nuts 18. By means of these slots,` bolts and nuts, the bed plate may be adjusted to diierent angular positions in relation to the top of the housing 1. The slots 14a permit a slight sliding movement of the bed plate when it is adjusted by mea-ns of the bolts operating in their respective slots.
On the top face of the bed plate, I have provided on each side of a saw slot 3 therein, longitudinal grooves 19 adapted to receive a tongue 20 of the mitre gage 21 shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The mitre gage is made of any suitable material with its forward end sheared off at an angle of 45 degrees and its upper face 29 inclined at the same angle to its lower face. At the outer edge of the mitre gage there is a downwardly and inwardly extending lip 22 which engages the edge and part of the under face of the bed plate to hold it in place. When it is desirable, this mitre gage can be locked in position by means of a ythumb screw 23, but when I am using the mitre gage for the purpose of holding and positioning the material sawed, the screw is not in use. Otherwise, the tongue 20 operating in the groove 19 coopcrates with the lip 22 engaging the longitudinal edge of the bed plate for holding the gage on the bed plate when being adjusted longitudinally of the said plate.
Vhen I desire to saw-material of a definite width, I place on one side of my bed plate a straight gage 24 which can be adjusted upon the bed plate and so held by means of athumb screw 24.
In the operation of the adjustable bed and mitre gage 21 for forming cuts of various widths, lengths and depths, the material 'is placed in position on the mitre portion 29 of the gage after the mitre 21 has been E! 1,4se,eos
properly adjusted. The bed 2 is likewise adjusted to determine the depth of the cut made by a saw operating through the slot 3. The timber is then moved forwardly into the saw when the desired out is made.

venient to cut what I call a reverse mitre. For this purpose, I have provided a secondary bed plate 26 of the shape shown in Figs. 2 and fl, a portion 27 of which is horizontally disposed with a portion 28 inclined at an angle or" a5 degrees to the horizontalvpart,
