Waukesha and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stanchions, of which the following is-a de scription, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, whic are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to stanchions and more particularly to means for locking the movable side of the stanchion relatively to the fixed portion thereof. A
It is the object of this invention to provide in a, stanchion having a relatively movable side, simple and efiicient means for holding this movable side in its operative position.
The invention furthermore consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts more fully hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying specification and drawings in which;

Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like parts it will be seen that the stanchion consists of a stationary stanchion member 10 and a movable stanchion member 11. The fixed stanchion member 10 is sub-' tantially U-shaped and is therefore provided with horizontally extending portions 12 and 13. p
The movable stanchion member 11 ispivotally secured to the fixed stanchion member by means of a pin 14 which extends through a pair of elongated slots 15 formed in the horizontal portion 13 of the fixed stanchion member 10. A coil spring 16 maintains the pin 14 in the upper ends of the slots 15.
The upper horizontal portion 12 of the fixed stanchion member 10 is preferably of tubular shape and is provided adjacent one end thereof with a cross-bar 17 adapted to gages.

Also secured to the upper end of the stanchion member 11 is a guide member 19 fixed to the stanchion member 11 as at 20 and curved about an axis concentric to the pivotal connection 14 of the stanchion member 11. The free end of the guide member19 is provided with a stop lug 21 for the purpose of limit ing the swinging movement of the stanchion member 11 in one direction.
The end of the horizontal portion 12 is suitably shaped to co-operate with the guide member 19 and stop lug 21, and for this purpose the said end is shaped to form shoulders 22 with which the head 21 en- Furthermore recesses 23 are formed for the accommodation of the guide mem- 7 ber 19.
Obviously, therefore, the guide member 19 may pass freely through the recesses 23 while the stop lug 21 will, upon engagement with the shoulders 22, arrest the movement of the movable stanchion member 11. To assist in guiding the guiding member 19 'the horizontal portion 12 is provided with lugs 24.
The stanchion is suspended from the stall frame 25 in the following manner. A bracket- 26 is secured to the stall frame 25. A coupling member 27 engages an eye carried by the bracket 26. This coupling member 27 is secured to the horizontal member 12 of the fixed stanchion member by means of a sleeve 28 provided with a clamping ring 29 about the top portion thereof, which clamping ring is adapted to pivotally secure in place a bail 30 around which is looped the coupling member 27. The connection between the stanchion and the stall frame at the bottom is accomplished in a similar manner, the sleeve 28 being duplicated at the bottom and a coupling chain 31 bein employed. Both couplings are provide with set screws 32 so that the stanchions may be adjusted with reference to the longitudinal length of the stall or pen.
Both of the stanchion members are preferably formed ofiron tubes and are provided alongtheir opposed faces with wood or the like facing members 33 which are secured with bolts. I From the foregoing it will be obvious that when it is desired to unlock the movable stanchion member this may be accom- Fig: 2.
The movement of the member 11 will be limited by engagement of the stop 21 with the shoulder 22 formed on the right hand end or the horizontal part 12 of the stanchion member 10. When it is desired to lock the stanchion member the movable member 11 is swung back towards the fixed member 10 whereupon the lip 18 maybe caused to pass the cross-piece 17 by again longitudinally displacing the member 11. In its closed position the stanchion is securely locked and held against accidental release. '7
While the structure described and illustrated herein has been found to be efficient and satisfactory in every respect it is not intended that the subject matter of this invention be unnecessarily limited but reservation is made to make such changes of construction and arrangement of parts as may come Within the purview of the accompanying claims.
, Having thus described this invention what is claimed is:
1. In a stanchion, a fixed stanchion member, a movable stanchion member pivotally and slidably connected at its lower end portion to the lower end portion or the fixed stanchion member and having a locking engagement at its upper endwith the upper end of the fixed stanchion member, said movable stanchion member beingv unlocked by a downward movement of the movable stanchion member;

In a stanchion, a fixed stanchion member, a movable stanchion member pivotally and slidably connected at its lower end to the fixed stanchion member and having a locking engagement at its upper end with the upper end of the fixed stanchion memher when in its upper positionand movable to unlocked position when moved longitudinally downwardly, and means for normally yieldingly holding the movable stanchion member in its upper locked position;

In a stanchion of the class described, a fixed stanchion member, amovable stanchion member pivoted thereto at one end thereof, a guide member carried by the other end of said movable stanchion member, said fixed stanchion being constructed to slidably receive said guide member, means carried by said fixed stanchion and engaging said guide for limiting the movement of said movable stanchion member and a latch means carried of said fixed stanchion member being shaped to accommodate said guide member, a stop carried by said guide member, the end of said fixed stanchion member being provided with shoulders for engagement with said stop and co-operating locking members carried by said stanchion members and disengageable by an axial displacement of said movable stanchion member.
5. In a cattle stanchion of the class described, a fixed stanchion member, a movable:
stanchion member pivoted thereto, said pivotal connection permitting an axial displacement of said movable'stanchion member, a guide member carried by the free end of said movable stanchion member, the adjacent end of said fixed stanchion member being shaped to accommodate said guide member, a stop carried by said guide member, the end of said fixed stanchion member being provided with shoulders for engagement with said stop, co-operating locking members" carried by said stanchion members and disengageable by an axial displacement of said movable stanchion member and means for suspending said fixed stanchion member.
6. In a stanchion of the class described, a fixed stanchion member of substantially U-shape, a movable stanchion member pivotally connected to said fixed stanchion member, said pivotal connection comprising a pin carried by one of said stanchion members and slots formed in the other member and a spring for maintaining said pin at one end of said slots, a guide member carried by the free end of said movable stanchion member, the adjacent end of said fixed stanchion member being hollow for the accommodation of said guide member, a stop lug carried by said guide member, the end of said fixed stanchion member being formed with a pair of shoulders for engaging said stop lug and being further provided with recesses for the accommodation of said guide member, projection carried by the end of said movable stanchion member, a transverse bar carried by said fixed stanchion member, said projection and bar co-operating to lock said stanchion members in closed position, said locking members being disengageable by a longitudinal displacement of said mor able stanchion member against the action, of said spring,

In a stanchion of the class described, a fixed stanchion member of substantially v U-shape, a movable stanchion member pivotally connected to said fixed stanchion memher, said pivotal connection comprising a. pin carried by one of said stanchion members and slots formed in the other member and a spring for maintaining said pin at one end of said slots, a guide member carried by the free end of said movable stanchion member, the adjacent end of said fixed stanchion member being hollow for the accommodation of said guide member, a stop .lug carried by said guide member, the end of said fixed stanchion member being formed with a pair of shoulders for engaging said stop lug and being further provided with recesses for the accommodation of said guide member, projection carried by the end of said movable stanchion member, a transverse bar carried by said fixed stanchion member, said projection and bar co-operating to lock said stanchion members in closed position, said locking members being disengageable by a longitudinal displacement of said movable stanchion member against the action of said spring and means for adjustably suspending said stanchion With reference to the longitudinal length of the stall.
