Description
Patented Mar. ll, i924.
FRIEDRICH ROSCHER, OF WASHINGTON,
DISTRIGT OF COLUMBIA.
Application led March 1, 1923, Serial No. 622,136. Renewed January 31, 1924.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH Rosolina, a citizen of Germany, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in combs and it is an objectof the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the teeth thereof are formed in a manner to substantially eliminate scratching ofthe scalp or undue friction being imposed thereon.
The scratching and rubbing of the scalp, as by the thin pointed teeth of ordinary combs results in the hardening or toughening of the skin and which action results in retardation of the flowing of blood through the scalp whereby the hair roots do not rew ceive requisite nourishment. It is a further object of my invention to provide a comb which avoids these disadvantages.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved comb wherein the teeth are formed in a manner to provide a cushion of hair between the scalp and the teeth as the comb is drawn through the hair and thereby providing a cushion which prevents scratching of the scalp and friction or rubbing action direct upon the scalp.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved comb whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention hereinafter be delinitely claimed.
ln order that my invention may be the better understood, l will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a view in perspective illustrating a comb constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a plan View of a blanlr from which the comb as illustrated in Figure l is produced;
Figure 3 is a view in perspective illustrating a comb constructed in accordance with a further embodiment of my invention;
win
Figure l is a view in perspective illustrating a comb constructed in accordance with another embodiment of my invention.
ls illustrated in Figures l and 2 of the accompanying drawings, my improved comb is produced from a blank B of preferred material possessing a requisite degree of rigidity yet capable of being readily flexed. The blank B as herein disclosed is oblong in form and provided at its transverse center with a series of longitudinally spaced recesses or slots l, said slots or recesses being disposed transversely of the blank. @ne longitudinal marginal portion of the blank B is provided with a reverted i'iange 2., a iip o of which being inwardly disposed.
ln producing the comb the blank B is returned or flexed transversely thereof with a marginal portion thereof engaged inwardly of the lip a of the flange 2 resulting in the formation of the teeth or strips As is clearly illustrated in Figure l each of the teeth or strips 3 is relatively wide and fiat and in side elevation is oval in form with its free end outwardly disposed. To further maintain the assembly of the comb suitable fastening means, generally indicated at. 4l, may be employed.
As the comb is drawn through the hair the outer ends of the teeth or strips 3 will pass over the scalp wit-hout scratching and with a minimum of friction upon the scalp. This action is due to the fact that the teeth or strips 3 will pass over a small percentage of the hair whereby a cushion is provided. This advantageous action of the teeth or strips 3 is also further facilitated in view of the factthat each of the same is relatively wide.
As illustrated in Figure l the longitudinal marginal portion of the bla-nh or body B may be readily attached or detached. This is of particular advantage because when said marginal portions are detached the blank or body B may be flattened out in order to facilitate cleansing and whereby the comb is maintained in a highly sanitary condition.
The embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figure 3 is substantially the same as hereinbefore described with the exception that the body E and the teeth or strips 3 are of greater thickness and that the longitudinal marginal portions of the blaul: or body l are permanently connected, sach connection being effected b v rivets or otherwise. as may be preferred.
Figure 4 illustrates an embodiment of my invention wherein the teeth 3 are solid yet having` a peripheral contour substantially the same `as comprised in the two forms of my invention hereinbetore referred to.
From the foregoing; description it is thought to be obvious that a comb constructed in accordance with my invention is par ticularly well adapted for use by reason ot the convenience and 'facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible ot' some change and modification without departing' from the principles and spirit there-ot' and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation ot the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
l claim l. As a new article of manufacture, a comb, the teeth of which being cach substantially oval in torm with the wider end ontwardly disposed.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a comb, the teeth oi which each being' substantially oval in form with the wider end outwardly disposed, the periphery of each ot the teeth being relatively broad.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a comb, the teeth of which each being substantially oval in form with the wider end outwardly disposed, the periphery or' cach ot the teeth boingrelatively broad and flat.
4. As a new article ot manufacture, a
comb comprising a body provided at its centra-l portion with a series of longitudinally spaced and transversely disposed slots, said body havingits longitudinal portions in overlying relation, the line ot fold intersecting the slots whereby a plurality of strips are provided, each of said strips being substantially ova-l in form with the wider end outwardly disposed.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a comb comprising a body provided at its central portion with a series of longitudinally spaced and transversely disposed slots, said body having1 its longitudinal portions in overlying relation, the line ot told intersecting the slots whereby a plurality of strips are provided, each of said strips being substantially oval in form with the wider end outwardly disposed, the periphery ot each of the strips being relatively broad.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a comb comprising' a body provided at its central portion with a series of longitudinally spaced and transversely disposed slots, said body having1 its longitudinal portions in overlying1 relation, the line of told intersecting the slots, whereby a plurality of strips are provided, each of said strips being substantially oval in form with the wider end outwardly disposed, and means :tor holding the longitudinal marginal portions of the FRIEDRICH ROSCHER.
