To all whom it may concern:
Be it .rnown that I, (lrrnsrnn ll. .LiNonLL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamp for Lead Molds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.v i
In casting articles of lead it is desirable to take advantage of the fact that molten lead cools very rapidly and therefore the mold should he made to be opened or closed very quickly.
t is an object of this invention to devise a fastening for a mold which shall he capable of being moved very quickly to the re lease position and yet shall securely hold theparts of the mold together when in fastenlng position.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a mold with two halves and a fastening device on one of these halves pro vided with a handle which by one continuous motion can he brought from a position in which the halves are clamped together to a position in which they are completely free, so that one may be moved away from the other.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the acconr panying drawings.
The invention (ina preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

The other half 2 of the mold has pivoted at the center of its front or outside a stirrup-shaped casting 9 shown in l. igures 1 and 5. point along the length thereof and is held in place by means of a set screw 18. Cine end of the bar 12 is provided with a handle 19 which is at right angles to the bar.
A pair of plates 20 are secured, one near each end of the half 2, and the ends of the bar 12 co-operate with these plates as shown in Figure 7. For this co-operation the bar is cut away to provide an eccentric portion, as shown at 21, and when the bar is rotated about its axis the change from the cut away side to a side of full radius, drives the plate 20. and so the half 2 toward the other hall 1. Motion oi the bar away from the half 1 din-in this turning is prevented by the seating or the ends 01" the bar in the slots and 8 of the ears and 6.
The upper edges of the inner fares oi the two halves 1 and 2 are beveled :lor a portion of their length, as shown at 22 and 23. T his afiords, between the two beveled portions, an opening 24 by which the lead enters the interior of the mold.
The operation follows:
Assuming the parts to be in the position indicated in full lines in Figure 1. lead is poured in through the opening 24;. the her-- eled surfaces 22 and serving as tunnel to guide 11 e lead to the interior of the mold. Fre'ferably this is done with the mold being; one of a series of molds in a machine, so that the pouring; automatically performed. As soon as the lead has had time to harden the mold is opened and the castingremoved.
. For this opening the handle 19 is grasped and moved downward from the full line position shown in Figure l. and at the same time given a quarter turn so that the parts arrive at the position illustrated in dotted lines in Figure l. The half 2 may then be removed from the half 1 by taking it from between the projecting ears and the casting may then be lifted out. To close the mold for the next casting operation. half 2 is again placed between the ears 5 and 6 and moved toward the half 1 so that the dowel pins enter the dowel holes. The handle 19 is then grasped and moved. upward until the ends of the bars 12 enter the slots 7 and 8. The bottoms of these slots serve as stop to quickly and certainly position the bar in this movement. lhe handle 19 is then moved further by rotating the bar 12. The lug 16 serves as a stop for this movement. During this movement the cut away eccentric portions 21 01. the bar are rotated away from the plates 20 and the higher or rounded surfaces of the bar coming against these plates thrust the member 2 home against the member 1 so that the mold is tightly closed.
It will be noted that the motion or" the handle 19 is in one continuous direction during the closing operation so that the workman does not consciously change from the swiveling movement about the pivot 10 to the rotating movei'nent about the axis or" the bar 12; but with one motion of his hand combines the two movements, being unconscious oi": the change from one to the other, each movement beingoguided by the stop for that n'iovement. The same is true the motion made by the workmen during the opening of the mold, although the movements take place in reverse order.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide r2. without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
ll claim as my invention:
1. Ll. mold, a casting swivelled upon said mold, a bar rotatably mounted in said castand stops for limiting the motion of the bar about said swivel and for limiting the motion of the bar about its axis.
2. in a mold. two halves, a pair of ears upon one of said halves, each ear having a slot therein. the mouths 01 the slots facing in opposite directions, a bar, a casting swivelled upon the other of said halves and having said. bar rotatably mounted therein, whereby motion of the casting about its swivel will cause the two ends of the bar to enter the two slots in said ears simultaneously. cam surfaces upon the bar at each end thereof, plates uponthe second mentioned half adapted to co-operate with said cam surfaces, and means for rotating the her about its axis whereby the cam surfaces will act against said plates to cause said halves to move toward one another.
3. in a mold, two halves, means for looking said halves together, means for forcing said halves into contact, an operating member common to said two means and a handle for said operating member whereby continuous motion of: the handle in one general direction will both look said halves and move them into contact.
