SKYLIGHT.
Application filed October 27, 1920. Serial No. 420,035.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN P. BpAsKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State have invented certain new and oflllinois, f h h useful Improvements in Skylights, the following is a specification.
One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a skylight of simple, strong and inexpensive construction and so arranged that it may be easily opened and closed.
The invention contemplates the provision of closure means preferably pivoted on links which are also pivoted to the framework of the skylight; and a further object of my invention is the provision. of novel means for moving the links so that the closure means may be easily and conveniently brought into a position to close the skylight or to open the same.
It is a .further ob ect of my invention to provide guide means associated with the skylight framework which are slidably engaged by suitable fastening members attached to the movable closure means'so that movement of the closure means relative to the framework may be under controlat all times.
The invention consists in the novel constructions, arrangements and devices to be hereinafter described and claimed for carrying out the above stated objects and such other objects as will appear from the following description of a certain preferred embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein--- 1 Fig. 1 is a perspective view of what may be termed a double skylight embodying the principles of my invention, the closure means for each side thereof being in open position;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the skylight, on an enlarged scale, the closure means on the right side thereof being opened and that on'the opposite side being closed;
Fig. 3 .is a detail view, on anenlarged scale, showing the guide means slidably engagedby the fastening-members carried by the respective closure means; and
Fig. 4 is .a detail View, on an enlarged scale, of the mechanism for opening and closing the skylight.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in the several views.
The framework of the skylight includes a curb 5 which is mounted in the ordinary manner around the opening in the roof to be equipped with the skylight. An inverted \l-shaped frame is mounted on the curb, each end of the frame including a transversely extending member 6, inclined side members 7 fastened at their upper ends to a vertical support 8 and at their lower ends to the member 6, the support 8 also being fastened to the member 6. A cross member 9 is fastened to the side members 7 and the support 8. The ends of the skylight may be enclosed in any suitable manner, for example, by a covering member 10.
The supporting members 8 preferably extend somewhat above the upper ends of the side members 7 and are provided on their respective edges with guide members 11 arranged so as to provide vertically extending channels or guideways 12.
The sides of the skylight are covered by closure means 13 of any desired construction, each preferably comprising a framework in which panes of glass are mounted as is common in skylight constructions. Links 14: are pivoted atone end to the frame members 7, said links at their other end being pivoted to the closure means 13. The connections between the links and the respective closure means which they support are preferably arranged so that the'closure means will be substantially balanced on the swinging links. Members 15 are attached at the upper corners to each of the closure means, said members 15 carrying pins or rollers '16 adapted to project into the respective adjacent channels 12.
In order to manipulate the respective closure means, I preferably provide for each of the links 14, a worm 17 journaled in suitable bearings provided on the cross member 9, said worm being driven in any desired manner, for example, by an endless chain 18 traveling over a sprocket 19 fixed to the worm shaft. A shaft 20 is journaled on the member 9 and carries a. gear 21 in mesh with the worm 17. One end of arod 22 is pivoted to the closure means, the other side with a rack 23 in mesh with a pinion 24; fixed to the shaft 20. The rod 22 is held, with its teeth in mesh with the gear 2%, by a yoke member 25.
In order to provide a weather-proof structure, a longitudinally extending ridge cap 26 is preferably mounted on the upper ends of the supports8. I
It will be obviou from the foregoing description, when the Worms 17 on the right side of the skylight are turned in the proper direction, that the gears 21 associated there with will be rotated clockwise and the associated rods 22 will be forced to travel out wardly, thus causing the associated links 14: to swing around into a position so that they are substantially at right angles to the closure means, consequently the closure means is lowered at its upper end and raised at its lower end; however, when the worms 17 are rotated in the opposite direction, the gears 21 will be rotated counter-clockwise and the rod 22 will travel inwardly, thus lowering the links 14 with the consequent result that the closure means is tilted so that its lower end drops and its upper end is raised. The arrangement on the other side of theskylight operates in a similar manner. By this arrangement openings may be provided at the top and bottom of the skylight and by manipulating the closure means air may be forced into or out of the building. Advantage of the air currents passing over the buildingand the skylight also. may be taken and the closure means manipulated so that a draft will be induced to pull the stale air out of the building through the openings on one side and per mit fresh air to enter the building through the opening on the other side.
I do not intend to limit my invention to the details of construction shown and described except only in so far as certain ofthe appended claims are specifically so limited, as it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made without departing from the principles of the invention.
I claim:
1. In combination, a supporting frame, closure means for said frame, means for moving said closure means relatively to said frame comprising a link pivoted at one end to said frame and at the other end to said closure means, means for swinging said link relatively to said frame. upwardly extending'guide means associated with said frame, and means carried by said closure means and slidably engaging said guide means, for the purpose specified.
2.,In combination, a supporting frame closure means 'for said frame, means for moving said closure means relatively to said frame comprising a link pivoted at one end tosaid frame and at the other end to said closure means, means for swinging said link relatively to said frame, upwardly extending guide means associated with said frame, at its upper end, iieans carried by said closure means and slidably engaging said guide means, and a cap member associated with said frame and overhanging the upper end of said closure means, forthe purpose specified.
