Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. WI-rrrn, a citizen of the United States. and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and State of l/Visconsin, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Knit Caps and Methods of Making Same;rand I do hereby declareJ that the following is a full, clear,V and exact description thereof.

4This invention relates to knit caps and to a method of making such caps.

Y It is well known that it is more expensive to produce circularly knit caps than it rwould be to produce caps formed f flat knit matelrial.

Objects of this invention are to provide a cap formed of blanks made of fiat knit material, to provide a cap having all of the 'seamed edges hidden fromL view, and to provide a cap 'which although formed of flat knit material is nevertheless fashioned to accurately and comportably fit the head.

Further objects are toprovide a method of yforming fashioned caps from fiat knit material in a simple and rapid manner, and to provide a method which will materially reduce the cost of making such caps. The cap is formed throughout of flat knit material and comprises a main body portion l of rectangular contour formed of fiat knit material. This body portion is formed with rectangular side notches 2 and with an upper substantially centrally located notch 3. The side notches 2 it is to be noted define an ear lap strip 4 integrally joined to the main portion ofthe rectangular member. ln forming the cap the sides 5 of thel rectangular notch are, stitched to the bottom portion 6 thereof, as shown in Figure 3,- it being understood that the portion 6 may be slightly gathered if desired. Thereafter, the edges 7 of the top are stitched together to form a central vertical seam, Las shown in Figure 3. The edges 8-8 and 9 9 of the notches 2 are respectively stitched together. One o-f the resulting side seams is shown in Figure 3, the o therfseam, of course, being similar and symmetrically located.

The apen of the member i0 is secured to the'body portion of the cap in any suitable manner as by means of stitching detail through an ornamental button l5 (see Figure d). VrJlhis vmaintains the auxiliary piece 10 in its elevated position and completely hides the central vertical seam and the side vertical seam so that no seams are exposed to view in the completed cap.

It is to be noted that the ear lap d is provided with button holes 16 adjacent its opposed edges and that when such ear lap strip is turned up in Figure e, these button holes may cooperate with buttons 17 stitched through the member 10 to the body portion of the cap. lf desired, an auxiliary strip of material, as indicated in dotted lines at 18 in Figure 4, may be employed and may be provided with any suitable securing means to retain it in a hidden position. @ne end of this strip 18 is stitched to a portion of the ear lap strip 4f and the other end.

It will be seen that a knit cap has been provided which is formed of fiat knit material throughout and that all the seams employed in the fashioning of the cap are completely hidden in the finished article.

Itwill further be seen that a method of making knit caps from flat knit material has been provided and that this method may be very quickly and easily followed with a minimum of expense and efort.

Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, tok be limited only as claimed.

I claim:

l. A knit cap formed of pieces of flat knit material comprising a body portion formed of a rectangular piece of material having side notches and having a front vertical central seam joining portions'o the upper edge of said piece, and having side vertical seams joining adjacent edges of said notches, and a flat piece of material having a triangular upper portion and a rectangular lower portion, said rectangular lower portion having its side edges secured in said side vertical seams, whereby said vertical seams are hidden. v

The method of making a knit cap from fiat knit material which method comprises notching the sides of a rectangular piece of knit material, to form a transverse, rectangular lower ear lapy strip, seaming the acent edges of said notches to form vertical side seams, seaming opposite portions of the top edge of said rectangular .piece to form a vcentral vertical seam, and securing the side edges of an auxiliary piece of material within the side seams, securing the lower edgeof said auxiliary piece of material to portions of the side edges of said rectangular piece of material, and securing portions of said ear lap strip to the side portionsiof said first piece of material. 5. A knit cap formed of pieces of fiat knit material comprising a body portion formed of a rectangular pieceof material having side notches and having a front vertical Vseam joining portions of the upper edge of said rectangular piece, and having side vertical seams joining adjacent edges of said notches,'and an auxiliary piece of material having its side edges secured in said side seams whereby all of said seams are hidden by said auxiliary piece of material.V
