GASLIGI-ITER."
Application filed June 12,1922. Serial No. $7,638
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM V. ROBIN- SON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Owosso, in the county of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaslighters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to gas lighters more particularly designed for use in lighting an oven burner of that type used in connection. with superposed ovens having a single burner for heating the same. With such constructions it is usual to arrange the burner at the top of the lower oven with the gas jets directed downward, so that the burner may be used as a broiler or toaster. Also, the hot gases are passed upward through the partition and are used for heating the upper oven. The burner -is generally located some distance back of the front, which renders it difficult to directly light without extending the hand into the lower oven. Various forms of lighters have been used with burners of this type, but the pres ent invention relates to an exceedingly simple construction by which the burner may be readily lighted from a point at the front of the upper oven, as hereinafter set forth;
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of an oven partly in section;
Figure 2 is a cross-section;
Figure 3 is an enlarged plan view of the lighter;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section of the burner;
Figure 5 is an enlarged side elevation of the portion of the burner adjacent to the lighter.
A is a gas stove of any suitable construction provided with the upper oven B and lower oven C and a partition D separating the same. E is the burner which is arranged below the partition and extends transversely of the oven centrally between the front and rear thereof. The burner is shown in the form of a loop or ring supplied by a mixing tube F at one side of the oven and the gas jets G are directed downward as shown.
My improved lighter consists in a member G, preferably a casting, which is placed between the upper and lower walls H and I of the hollow partition-D. Thelower face of the; member has a groove-- or channel extending longitudinally thereof, which, "at
its rear end,islo cateddirectly over a portion of the burner E andat its forward end communicated with an aperture J inanupwardly-exten'dinglug K. This lug passes through an aperture iii-the upper wall I of the partition and is located at a point which is adjacent to tlie'frontofthe-oven. L is an aperture in the'lower wall H of the partition, which is beneath the rear end'of the channel G. Y M is a 'gas-jet-aperture'in thetop of the burner E which is in registration with the aperture =L, and N is a tubular fit ting extending from the jet M to a point "adjacent to the-wall H. Thus gasescaping from the burner through the jet'opening-M will pass upward through the tube N into the channel G and thence forward to the aperture J. This will "produce a combustible mixture of gas and'air, which, when a match is applied to the i aperture J, will cause the flame to travel backward to' the jet M. From this point the flame' iscommuni cated to the down-turned jet apertures G by a series of intermediate apertures-O, as
shown in Figures 4 and '5.
The construction described'di'spenses with lugs G on opposite sides thereof which are bolted or otherwise attached to the lower wall of the partition. This will form on the lower wall the complementary portion of the gas tube through which the flame travels from the point of ignition to the burner.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with superposed ovens, of a hollow partition for separating the same, a burner arranged in the lower oven beneath and adjacent to said partition, said burner having an upwardly directed jet opening and a member forming a channel within said hollow partition having its rear end in register with an aperture in the lower wall of said partition and with said jet opening and its forward end in reglster with an aperture in the upper wall of said parti-.
oven front, the forward end of said channel opening upward through an aperture in the upper wall ofthe partition;
3. The combination with superposed ovens,of a hollow partition for separating the same comprising spaced upper and lower sheet-metal walls, a 'burner'arranged beneath said partition having downwardly directed jet openings and also an upwardly directed jet opening in vertical alignment with an aperture in the lower wall of said partition,
a member between the walls of said partition forming a channel for directing the gas from said upward jet forward and discharging the same through an aperture in the upper wall of the partition adjacent to the oven front, and a tube intermediate said burner and partition surrounding said upwardly directed jet opening to conduct the gas therefrom into said channel.
4. The combination with superposed ovens, of a hollow partition for separating the same comprising spaced upper and lower walls, a burner in the lower oven having downturned jets, a signle upturned jet and a series of runner jets between the latter and the downturned jets, and a member arranged between the upper and lower walls of the partition forming a channel having its rear end registering with an aperture in the lower partition in alignment with said upwardly directed jet and its forward end registering with an aperture in the upper wall of the partition, andv a tube on said burner extending between the same and said partition surrounding said upwardly directed jet and conducting the gas therefrom into said channeled member.
5. The combination 7 with ovens, of a hollow partition therebetween comprising spaced upper and lower walls, a gas burner below said partition and a member between said walls having a channel in its lower face communicating with an aperi ture through thelower wall and at its forward end having an upwardly extending apertured lug passing through an aperture in the upper wall, said member constituting a lighter tube for conducting gas from said burner to the upper oven and flame from the latter to the burner.
6. The combination with superposed ovens, of a'hollow partition for separating the same, a burner arranged in the lower oven beneath and adjacent to said partition, said burner having an upwardly directed jet opening, and means within said hollow partition in communication with an aperture in the lower wall of said partition and with said jet opening, said means also being in communication with an aperture in the upper wall of said partition to discharge the jets into said upper oven.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WILLIAM V. ROBINSON.
