Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led February 10, 1910.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. YoUnG, a citizen of the UnitedV States, residing at Snyder, in the county of Scurry, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and` use the same.
This invention relates to oil burners for cook stoves and its principal object is to provide an improved ygeneral construction of burner which can be used in any of the ordinary types of cook stoves without requiring great changes to be made in the structure of the stove. n
The invention consists in general of an improved construction of burner of this description and further consists in certain noveldetails of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stove partly in section showing the burner parts in position. Fig.

The numeral indicates the body of a stove and this stove body is provided in its rear wall with the usual Hue opening 11 communicating with the stove pipe 12. The stove body is also equipped with the ordinary fire-box 13 wherein is located a grate 14. This fire-box is also provided with a draft opening covered by a door 15 which may be opened or closed to regulate the draft. The fire-box 13 is provided with a bottom 16 wherein is a centrally disposed opening 17 which communicates with a chamber corresponding to the ash pit of the ordinary stove and which chamber projects out in front of the lire-box as indicated at 18 and is provided with a top 19 which may be a forwardly extending continuation of the bottom 16 having a series of openings 20 formed therein for producing draft. In
this chamber is held an oil pan 21 of substantially triangular shape in plan and having its narrow end toward the front. Extending upward through the top 19 is a drip tube 22 wherein is a valve 23. On the upper end of this drip tube is an oil receptacle 24 preferably in the form of a funnel. Within the tire-box 13 is held a series of horizontally disposed superposed battle plates v25 each provided with a multiplicity of openin`gs 26, the openings in each plate being in staggered relation to the openings in the plates next thereto. These plates 25 are held in position by means of brackets 27 each comprising a zig-zag strip of metal with the portions of the zig-zag lying in parallel relation so that the metal forms engaging and spacing means for the plates. At 28 is indicated the oven top and extending from the sides of the Hre-box to the Hue opening 11 are Hue sides 29 whereon rests a substantially triangular cover plate 30, thus forming a Hue tapered from front to rear and leading from the lire-box to the Hue opening in the body. This plate 30 is preferably in spaced relation to the cast iron top of the stove so that direct impingement of the Hame on the top is prevented.
In the operation of this device the receptacle 24 is filled with the preferred quality of oil and the valve opened so that it drops slowly through the drip tube into the pan 21 where it may be lighted. The flame will be carried by the draft entering throughv the openings 2() up through the opening 17 and will pass throughY the multiplicity of openings in the different baHle plates and thence out by way of the triangular Hue to the stove pipe 12. At rst, by reason of the coldness of the plates 25, a certain amount of soot will collect on these plates, but after the plates become heated by the flame this soot will be burned 0H' and will serve to increase the heat passing through the Hue and thus keep the stove as hot as may be desired.
There has thus been providedl a simple and eHicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
I-Iaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In an oil stove, a body having a Hue opening in the rear, a fire-box in the body having a bottom provided with an opening,
a Hue tapering from front to rear and leading from the fire-box to the flue opening in the rear, an oil pan below said iire-box and extending out in front of said body, a perforated cover on the outwardly extending portion of the oil-pan, a drip tube extending upwardly from the oil pan, a valve in said drip tube, an oil receptacle on the upper end of the drip tube, a series of superposed baffle plates extending across said fire-box and each provided with a multiplicity of perforations, the perfor-ations in each of said plates being in staggered relation to the perforations in the next adjacent plates, and means to hold said baile plates in spaced relation in the iire-box.
2. In an oil stove, a body having a flue opening in the rear, a lire-box in the body having a bottom provided with an opening, an oil pan below said iire-box and extending out in front of said body, a perforated cover on the outwardly extending portion of the oil-pan, a drip tube extending upwardly from the oil pan, a valve in said drip tube, an oil receptacle on the upper end of the drip tube, a series of superposed b afHe plates extending across said fire-box and each provided with a multiplicity of perforations, the perforations in each of said plates being in staggered relation to the perforations in the next adjacent plates, means to hold said baille plates in spaced relation in the firebox, and a flue tapered from front to rear and leading from the iirebox to the flue opening in the body, the top of said flue being in spaced relation to the top of the stove body.
