Be it known that GEORGE M. HENRIE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Louis, inv the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, has invented new and useful llmprovements in Ironing Boards, of which the following lis a specilication. v
The object of the invention is to provide 1o an ironing board of the folding type adapted for attachment t0 theedge of a table or ledge, and particularly to provide a device of this type whereby an eective engagement of the clamping means with the table or ledge may be insured without injury to the latter, and whereby the elements of the structure maybe readily adjusted to correspond with the height of the table top or ledge and the convenience of the operator; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment' is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side View partly broken away of an ironing board constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an invertedv plan view of the same showing the leg standard in section. ,o Figure 3 is a detail View of the latch.y
Figure 4 is a detail vertical sectional view through the swivel connection between the latch member and the jaw actuating rod.
The board 10 which obviously may be of 95 any desired shape and dimensions is provided at its inner end with a clamp 11 consisting of jaws 12 adapted for movement toward and from the under surface of the adjacent end of the board to clamp there- 40 between the edge of a table top or shelf or ledge 13, said jaws being pivotally mounted upon and carried by arms 14: of a rock shaft 15. Also carried by said shaft is an arm 16 connected by a rod 17 with a latch 5 18 which is carried by the upper end of the leg or standard 19.
In the construction illustrated the jaws 12 and arms 14 with the connecting shaft constitute in effect a bell-crank lever mounted in the hanger portions 20 of the brackets 21 which are secured to the under surface of the ironing board.
The leg or standard 19 is -adjustably connected with the latch 18 by means `of an attaching plate 22 which is slotted as shown ,ses
at 23 for engagement by the bolti24 fitted of the former with relation tothe latter is eifected by providing the latch18`with ya fulcrum pin 26 which isterminally fitted in slots 27 in the side members 28 of a hangerv also depending from the ironing board and carried by a suitable base plate 29. v
The connection between the rod 17 and the latch is effected byv means of a sleeve 30 mounted upon a pin 31 and constituting a guide through which the rod .17 extends, said rod carryinga coiled spring 32 seated at one end against the sleeve and engaged at the other end by nut 33 which `is threaded on the rod. v
The latchvwhen the leg or standar-d is in its normal or operative position is adapted for engagement with a catch consisting of a shouldered seat 34v formed in the base plate 29. Y
In operation the clamp is arranged in the desired position with relation to the edge of the table or ledge to which it is to be attached and the leg or standard is then swung from the dotted line position indi.- cated in Figure 1 in the direction shown by the arrow to apply tension to the rod 17, said leg or standard swinging von the center represented by the pin 26, until the leg or standard reaches an upright position whereupon an upward movement thereof will effeet the engagement of the extremity of the latch with the catch and thereby lock thel parts in operative position. The leg or standard obviously will be held in the upright position by the engagement of the latch with the catch just as the clamp will be held in proper engaging position byv the same agency, under the yielding eifect of the spring 32 of which the compression may be adjusted to suit the conditions and more particularly the thickness of the tabley top or ledge 13 with which the clamp is engaged. The swivel 30 will permit of the swinging movement of the latch with relation to the rod 17, and the latter maybe provided as shown at with the collar or stop for engagement by the sleeve when the leg or standard is in the folded position, to hold the clamp open or hold the jaws 12 spaced vwith the thumb nut 25, and the pivotalv Yno ' and including a movable jaw, a standard pivotally mounted for swinging movement into a plane parallel with the ironing board, a latch carried by the standard for engagement with a stationary cat-ch when the standard is in its operative or supporting position, and a tensile connection between said latch and the movable jaw of the clampy yieldingly engagedwith the former.
2. An ironing board having a clamp forV i kengaging the edge of a table top or ledge and including a movable jaw, a standard pivotally mounted for swinging movement into a plane parallel with the ironing board, a latch carried by the standard for engagement with" aV stationary catch vwhen lthe standard isV in its operative or supporting position, and a tensile connection between said latch and the movable jaw of the clamp, the latch being fulcrumed upon a bracket depending from the board.
3. An ironing board having a clamp for engaging the edge of a table top'or ledge and including a movable jaw, a standard pivotally mounted for swinging movement into a plane parallel with the ironing board,
a latch carried by the standard for engaging with a stationary catch when the standar 1s in its operative or supporting position, and a tensile connection between said latch and the movable jaw ofthe clamp and consisting of a rod extending through a' guide on the latch, and a spring for positioning the rod with relation to the guide.
4. An ironing board having a clamp for Y engaging the edge of a table top o-r ledge and including a movable jaw? a standardv pivotally mounted for swinging movement into a'planeparallel with the ironing board,
a latch carried by the standard for engaging vwith a stationary catch when kthe standard is in its operative or supporting Vposi-V tion, and a tensile connection between said* latch and the movable jaw of the clamp and consistingof a rod7 a swive-lled guide on the latch for directing said rod, and a coni-Y pression spring arranged lin bearingtrela-v tion with the said guide. A i
In testimony whereof he allixes his signature.
