FOLDlNG BOX 0B, CRATE.
' Application inea January 13, 1923. seriall No. 612,502.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, CORNELL FLAGs'rAD and OSCAR A. FLAG'STAD, citizens of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and VState of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes or Crates,`
specification, are specifically pointed out in' the appended claims, and are lclearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig.v 1 is an end view of the crate, set up.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the crate, set up.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged'sectional view, as seen on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a' detail perspective view of'a lower inner corner portion of the crate, showing the construction of the hinge plate 19.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view looking upward against one corner portion of the crate cover, or as seen substantially on the line 5-5 in Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of cover retaining irons 25.
Referring to the drawings more particularly and by reference characters, which characters respectively indicate like parts in the various figures, 8 designates the base of the crate which is hollow, consisting of a bottom 9 and an upstanding rim 10 secured thereon.
The crate consists further of a pair of end sections 11, a pair of side sections 12 and a cover 13. The end sections 11 are hinged, as at 14, to the base, as are also the sections 12 hinged at 15, but the former are hinged at a lower point than the latter so that the sections can be compactly knocked down or folded into the base, as described one of the in our patent above mentioned. The cover 13 is securable either to the top edges of the sections, when set up as shown, or when the crate is knocked down it is securable to the base member so as to hold all the'parts in a compact folded unit.
The side and endsections 12 and 11 are provided at their lower ends with hinge butts 16 and 17, respectively, which arev secured by hinge pins or pintles 18, to hinge plates 19, one of which is secured in each inner corner of the base 8. `Each plate 19 is right angular in shape so that when secured to the base member it willv serve as an excellent brace for holding the adjacent base rim portions together', and willy also insure the proper relative hinge centers for the side and end sections ofthe crate to swing' on. The pintle bearings 20, ofthe plate 19, are formed by being struck up from the plate (see et) so that it is necessary to slot the plate fromone set of bearings to the other andy in an angular direction, as the respective bearings are at.
slot are-brought together, as indicated by the line 21, so that the bracing strength.
(above mentioned) of the materially weakened. v
The basemember is also provided with brackets 22 havingopenings 23 adapted to receive the fingers 2.4: of plate 25`2of the cover, on one side ofthe crate, and the bolts 26 of the cover, on the other side, when the crate is in a folded position, thus securing the crate as a compact folded or knocked down unit. The brackets 22 are further provided with perforations 22aM to allow the adjacent hinge pintles to be inserted in the bearings 20 after the plate 19 has been secured. Y
In setting up the crate the cover is first removed and the side and end sections are plate will not be then respectively raised to vertical positions, I
bridged at their inner ends from the vertical tions are provided With apertures 30 for receiving the members 24C and 26 ot the cover 13, when' the crate is set up, in the same Vmanner as thebrackets 22 receive said members When the crate is knocked down or folded together.v
The cover 13 consists primarilyV ci' a series of longitudinal strips secured together by cross strips, the ends of the cover resting n0rmally on the end sections 11, when the crate is set up. @ne side` cia the cover is provided with the plates 2,5 having the corrugated securing fingers 24 While the other Side is provided with` the securing means including the sliding bolts 26.
The bolts 2,6 Vare hingedly secured, as at 3,1', to a movable closing strip 32, having a locking device 3.3 (See Fig. 2). The bolts 26y are'slidable and guide in strips 34, and also in the downward projection 35 of e member 36, secured to the cover. A plate 37., tQWhich the bolt 2 ,6 is securedat 31 is se-l Cured to the underside ol the movable strip. 32,.'andris provided withV an ear iivhich,
Y when thestrip 32l isclosed` down, engages in:
f possibility of such a retraction. f Y
Itis understood that suitable Vniovdiiications` 1 a corresponding hole 39, in the member 3,6.
and thus prevents a retraction ofthe Ybolts VV26 by the stripl 32 moving back. Vl/fhen the strip is locked down there is of course no ina be made in the eneral designv and strucv YVtural details of this invention, provided,
however that such modiicavtgiorsl come with- Yin thespirit and scope of the appendedV claims. Having now therefore 'fully Shown and described our invention what we claim 1. The.V combination with collapsible crate (it the character described, otra hinge integral with the adjacent edge thereof,
hinge bearings formed in said portions by being struck up therefrom.
2. The combination with a collapsible crate of the'character described, otra hinge plate having one end portion toi-ined at right angles to and integral with the adjacent edge of the opposite end portion, said end portionsy having integral strap members bent in to form hingemembers.
3. rlhe combination in a crateY having a base, inwardly folding pairs oit side and endV sections and a detachable cover, ot catches adapted'to sec-ure the side and end sections in set up position, said catches consisting of interlocking corner irons secured on the adjacent edges of said sections, the corner irons ot one pair ot said sections having apertured extensions, fixed fingers on one edge of said cover and movable securing bolts atjtlle Opposite edge of said cover, saidV fingers and bolts being adapted to engage in Y said apertured corner iron extensions.
Y 4L. In a crate having a detachablecover, lined fingers at one edge ot said coverfor engagement Withone sideof the crate, bolts slidaole at the opposite edge et theV cover :tor engagement Withthe opposite side notY the crate, a pairofplates secured to said coverfcr guiding said bolts, aglid hingedly secured to, said bolts and movable therewith when. Open, Said hd, having downwardly pref,
jecting ears adapted to engage with. said Y,plate When the lid is'closfed to preventretraction of said. bolts.
5- lnicoinbnation with a crate detachable co-ver, a cover securing member consist-ingot a Yplate adapted to, be ixed at one corner of' the; cover, saidzplate having a clianneled'portion Yextending laterally therefrom in a crate linger, vand flanges 'i formed integral With the plate for engagement with the adj acentv edges of the cover.`
In. testimony whereof We atiix our signaf Costiera rtaes'ran] f tures. 'Y
