UNITE HENRY M. BEECHEE, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPRCVEMENT IN DIES FOR FORGING CARRlAGE-STEP PADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,589, dated March 17, 1 874; application filed lluly 31, 1873.
To all whom fit may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY M. BEECHER, of Vest Meriden, in the county of New Haz ven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Forging Carriage-Step Pads, of which the following is a specification:
In my improved dies the faces of both the upper and lower die-blocks are corrugated in such a manner that the depressions in one block are directly opposite the elevations in the other, and in the lower die-block is a larger tapering recess or depression, in which the junction of the step-pad and its shank is formed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l isa front elevation of dies for forging step-pads which embody my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan or face view of said dies.
A designates the upper, and B the lower die. The faces of both of said dies are corrugated-that is, covered with alternate elevations and depressions so arranged that when the faces ofthe dies meet the corrugations match into each other, as shown in Fig. l. C designates a tapering recess extending from near the center of the lower die-block B to one edge. This recess is designed to form an enlargement upon the under side of the step-pad to strengthen it at the point of junction with its shank. The step-pad blank, after being formed in any ordinary manner, is brought .to a proper heat, and subjected to pressure between the dies A B, when the thin portion thereof will be corrugated to correspond with the face of the dies. The edges of the step-pad so struck up may then be trimmed, when it is ready for the carriage-maker.
The direction of the corrugations may be varied, in order to producey corrugated steppads of various designs. A step-pad of any contour, and of any size not exceeding that of the face of the dies, may be struck therein.
I have designated the die which forges the upper side of the step-pad as the upper die, Ste., but it is evident that either die may be placed uppermost in the drop or other forging machine, as may be desired. l,
Iclaim as my invention- The dies A B, corrugated upon their faces, and provided with the tapering recess C, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
Vitnesses: HENRY M. BEECHER.
