MOLD FOR AND METHOD OF DOLL CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed August 2, 1922. Serial No. 579,103.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ELLA L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States of-America, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Randolph and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in .olds for and Methods of Doll Construction, of which the following is a specilication.
M invention relates to improvements in mold7 for and method of doll construction, and comprises the steps in the method of making the improvement... A
An object of my invention is to pro-vide a method of In dolls.
A further object of my invention is the construction of an indestructible doll by an economical and rapid vmethod which ma be carried out by persons ,relatively unskilled in the molding and in the construction of toys.
A further object of my invention is to construct a two-piece doll head formin all the parts of the face and the head 1n a single operation from a four-piece mold; that is, o-ne operation in forming the front of the head and the side of the head and eared, and another in forming the back of the With these and other objects in view, one embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in. which Figure 1 lis a plan View of the inner side of the front head and the side of the head and ear molds Figure 2 is a plan View of the inner side of the back of the head mold;
Figure 3 is a section ori line 3--3 of Figure 1; e
Figure 4 is a section on line 4 4: of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the inner side of one of the sides of the head and ear molds;
Figure 6 is a section on line 6 6 of Figure 1;
Figure 7 is a side elevation of a complete dollhead, joined together with stitches;
Figure 8 is a side elevation of a complete doll head joinedtogether'with staples; and
Figure .9 is a section on line 9-9 of` F1 re 8.
the construction of my improved doll head lI use a four-piece mold. The front of the head mold 1 contains the usual recesses nufacturing indestructible v the trunk or other parts of for forming the front part of the face. There are two of the side of the .head and ear molds 2 and 3 which are duplicates. rIlle back of the head mold 4 consists of a single piece. The front of the head and t-he back of the head molds may consist on the outside of babbitt or similar metal parts 5 and 6, joined to` lighter parts 7 and 8, respectively, made of plastic or other lighter material. The front of the head and the back of thehead molds may consist of one piece of met-al or other suitable material instead of two pieces. The side of the head and ear molds are made of babbitt or other suitable metal. In order to hold the side of the head and ear mold parts in proper position relative to the front'of the head mold during the molding operation, two points 9 are molded on each of the molds which it into sockets 10 made in the front of the head mold.
The process of making `a complete doll 'head as shown in Figures 7 and 8 comprises placing a layer of fabric 1l such as stockinette or other elastic material in each of the molds as shown in Figures 1 and 2. 0n this fabric layer is placed a plastic layer 12 which is then covered by fabric layer 13 which is covered by plastic layer 14. The ends lofthe fabric layer 11` are' turned over a short distance on the lastic layer 14. After the material has hardiened, the parts of the head are removed from theV molds, the mold. parts 2 and 3 being lifted off of part 1'. It will be noted that the ear 16 has been formed in the same manner as the nose and mouth in""the recess-16a in molds 2 and 3. The two parts of the head may/be stitched together as indicated at 17, or may be stapled together as indicated `by staples 18. .After the two gether, the opening between the two parts may be filled with cotton 19 or other suitable material. It will be apparent that a n doll head constructed in the manner indicated will be practically indestructible, the
layers of fabri preventing the plastic part preventing the plastic on the inside from changing its position even if broken.
e The method of forming dell heads may, ofcourse, be applied tothe construction of a doll, as well` as to the construction of animals of the kind usually referred to under the head of toys.
parts have been secured to- Q Matheo The head of the doll ymay be suitably painted to produce distinctive features by well-known methods, and as described in ilryQPatent No. 1,321,135 of November l1,
It is evident that instead of using fabric in forming the doll head, l may use any other suitable material, such as soft leather.
It is obvious that the seam or line made by joining the front and back pieces of the head may be covered' by paint used in finishing the doll head or it may be covered by gluing over it a narrow strip of textile or other suitable material and then painting over the strip.
Having described my invention, what l claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is y 1. A mold for the manufacture of dolls comprising four parts', one of said parts adapted to mold the front of the head, one the back of thev head, and two the side of t the head and ears.
2. A mold for the manufacture of dolls comprising four parts, three of said parts adapted to mold the front of the head and side of the head as one piece and the other part adapted to mold the back of the head. 3. A mold for forming the vhead of a 30 doll, said mold comprising duplicate parts adapted to mold the ears as a part of the front of the doll head.
. 4. A mold for manufacturing doll heads comprising front and back pieces and two duplicate lnterrnediate pieces, said intermediate pieces having locking points thereon fitting into sockets in the face of the front piece. 4
The method of constructing doll heads which comprises forming two parts thereof by placing an initial layer of fabric in a three-part mold and in a one piece mold, covering these layers with a layer of plastic, then applying successive layers vof fabric and plastic, allowing the` plastic material to set, joining together the two parts and stuffing the opening between the parts with resilient material. y.
6. The method of constructing doll heads which comprises forming two parts thereof in a four-piece mold, forming the front part thereof in three pieces of said mold, said part consisting of the frontof the head and the middle pat of the head including the ears, forming the back of the u' head` in the remaining piece of said mold, and attaching the parts together. t 'In' testimony whereof l affix my signature.
